The 2011 Cubs By The Numbers

With yesterday's announcement of several new players being given minor league deals with non-roster invites to spring training, the spring roster is complete. There will be 59 players in camp.

This post lists the entire roster, plus coaches (and retired numbers, so you can see the entire numerical progression) and spring training instructors. All the numbers from 1 to 66 are either issued to someone or retired. And while we're on the topic of Cubs uniform numbers, here's another shameless plug. If you don't yet have your copy of "Cubs By The Numbers", the book co-authored by me, BCBer kaseyi and Matt Silverman, you can order yours at this link.

After the jump, the complete numerical roster of the 2011 Cubs.

Interesting that he dropped the 0 off his Cubs playing uniform.

Al, will these be saved on BCB somewhere?

This is something I would stick in my pocket for spring training.

Al

this is the hard hitting analysis that gets me excited for 2011!

looks like I wont be playing for the Cubs this year as my # (82) is taken…my heart breaks…

so if I claim 72

does that mean I can play?

Interesting article on Marty Mason

It seems like Mason got in Cardinal’s GM doghouse and was dismissed. He was a longtime right hand man of Dave Duncan.

If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

by tharr on Jan 28, 2011 8:38 AM CST reply actions

I would think it was an excellent acquisition

Mason had an issue with the Cards minor league system which is very weak. He apparently is well liked by the younger pitchers so his position at Tenn might very well add much to guys on the way up.

Good pickup Tharr

I would have to think this is a good move, under the radar so to speak. Nice.

I wonder if Scales

will set the record for number of years in our minors. Perhaps we can build a mini statue to him outside Wrigley.

Scales has only been in the Cubs organization since 2008.

Before that he spent seven years in the Padres chain, one with the Phillies org, and one with the Red Sox.

Luis Montanez

has to be getting pretty close to the record in our system, right?

Anyone know who the longest tenured minor leaguer for the Cubs is ever without playing in the bigs?

Okay, here's a challenge

What will be the highest uniform number on the opening day roster? Berg?

by PalatineRol on Jan 28, 2011 12:05 PM CST reply actions

Not necessarily

If one of the high numbered players does make the team they could claim a lower number once the season starts and lower numbers become available.

John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

I think MLB will settle.

There are issues, but the two sides seem amicable and understand the dollars at stake.

NFL and NBA? Not so much.

if the NBA has a lockout

will anyone notice outside of sports talk radio?

LBJ will

LBJ notices anything that has an impact on LBJ

by timh815 on Jan 28, 2011 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Depending

the minor leaguers still might play. I hope we are very judicious in our 2011 callups.

by timh815 on Jan 28, 2011 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

So, assuming no trades or unexpected releases (dome, baker, Silva) or injuries (sigh..) there are 38 guys for 5 spots..

assumed locks being 8 starters plus Hill (probably) and Colvin (unless he pulls a hoffpauir), and 4 SP (z, demp, garza and wells), Marmol, wood, marshall, Grabow, Silva. and Caridad.

3 more offensive players – Johnson, Barney (Baker or Dewitt released), Perez
2 more pitchers – Russell and Guzman or Shark (ok.. fat chance on shark)

by DisCUBbobulated on Jan 28, 2011 12:50 PM CST reply actions

Shark will make the team

unless he has a horrible Spring Training.

He'll wave it so he can pitch in the big leagues...

Yankees and Larry Rothchild will take him…and NOT soon enough.

Actually, you might be on to something here.

If the Yankees would take his deal, I’d send him there and not ask for much in return.

While he may waive his NTC

and I wouldn’t ask for much in return, he kinda has to pitch in the bigs this year, or get released.

by timh815 on Jan 29, 2011 8:33 AM CST up reply actions

True.

I could see the Yankees using him in their bullpen, though. The Cubs don’t really have room for him there.

Disagree

You have 6 outfielders and 5 infielders. Assuming the 12 man pitching staff you’ll have either Johnson or Perez and both Barney and Baker making the team.
