Greg Maddux To Be On Baseball Management Panel At Cubs Convention
Greg Maddux, who will be entering his second season as an assistant to Cubs GM Jim Hendry, will be among the panelists at the baseball management session at the Cubs convention.
The Cubs released some of the highlights of the convention schedule today. Here are some of what are likely to be the most popular draws. All of the sessions below are on Saturday, Jan. 15.
☻ "Meet Cubs Baseball Management," featuring General Manager Jim Hendry, Assistant General Manager Randy Bush, Manager Mike Quade and Assistant to the General Manager Greg Maddux, takes place at 10 a.m. in the Continental Ballroom.
☻ "Pitching Evolution," featuring Kerry Wood, Randy Wells, Sean Marshall, Jeff Samardzija, Andrew Cashner and Pitching Coach Mark Riggins, at 10:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom. The group will explain the art of being a starting pitcher, set-up man and closer, the differences between the roles and the pressures and rewards that come with each.
☻ "The Q Factor," featuring Manager Mike Quade and coaches Rudy Jaramillo, Lester Strode, Ivan DeJesus, Bob Dernier, Mark Riggins and Dave Keller at 12 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom. Quade and his staff will discuss their techniques and philosophies heading into the 2011 season.
☻ "Remembering Ronnie," featuring Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Glenn Beckert, Randy Hundley, Milt Pappas and Jose Cardenal, at 3 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom. Ron Santo’s teammates will gather, share some of their favorite stories and fondly remember their teammate and friend.
☻ "The Dominican Way of Life," featuring Aramis Ramirez, Starlin Castro, Carlos Peña and Vice President of Player Personnel Oneri Fleita, at 3:30 p.m. in the Boulevard Room. The group will talk about their transition from the Dominican Republic to the United States and Fleita will discuss how the organization scouts, develops and transitions international players to the United States.
Also, there will be a session with the Ricketts family at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Grand Ballroom, and Cubs business management will have a session at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Grand Ballroom. And, in case you missed my comment in the spring training ticket thread, after showing up as "sold out" yesterday, you can now once again buy individual convention passes.

That was my first thought
Although, I’m not sure Greg wants to be Dwight Schrute.

I've been trying to find the entire convention schedule
Does anyone have it?

Sundays Tribune will have it with complete list of attendees. I’m sure someone will post it. If nobody else will I always pick it up Saturday to do the puzzles so I will sometime Saturday.

Unfortunately the person I planned to ask my question of
is not on that panel but he may be on one of the ones not listed.I will see what I can think of but I won’t be asking Maddux anything.

Thanks for the update
I was on pins and needles about who you were going to piss off this year.

Well I seem to have been getting a lot of suggestions
I could always ask Quade if he plans to play Scales in LF in Sept.

You'll be too nervous to ask Maddux a question?
Or is there some other reason?

Why do you do this to me Al?
I’d be in tears.

I’d be in tears.
So will a lot of people. But I’ll bet there will be a lot of laughter, too.

I'm sure there will be a lot of smiles and laughs too.
I smiled when I watched online as Pat delivery the eulogy. Still,…

we might want to get down to the hotel and get in the room and take seats now to get in.

Back in '07, I spent the entire Saturday in the Grand Ballroom.
Got a seat on the center aisle in the second row and just stayed there for the day’s sessions. Might be time to consider that again (if I were going)

Oh, you're going...
…you just don’t realize it yet. ;-)

Hmm. I sense a disturbance in the force...

Um, unless there's a time shift going on
I don’t see how we can make it. My plane home Friday doesn’t get in until 4:20pm est.

I can sell you my reservation for face value
I think that I have another way to get tickets.

I wonder if they thought
of putting Samardjia in the Management meeting so people could then ask Jim Hendry why he gave the pitcher a $10MM signing bonus?
Then, ask Samardjia if he would be more successful just catching passes?
Maybe
Maybe someone should put him in a meeting with Lovie. He is the 3rd best wide receiver on a Chicago roster (behind Knox and Hester)

And Earl Bennett
But, the Bears don’t have anyone like him on the team.

First 3 questions at the Baseball Management Panel
Question 1: This question is for Greg Maddux. Greg, is there any chance that you would come out of retirement and pitch for the Cubs this season?
Greg Maddux Answer: That’s not in the cards this year. Although I want to stay close to the game, I’m working on mastering the front office skills to move forward with the Cubs.
Question 2: This question is for Jim Hendry. Jim, what kind of contract parameters do you think it would take to lure Greg Maddux out of retirement?
Jim Hendry Answer: We don’t see that as a possiblity this season. But I’m sure the dollar amount would be in excess of $12MM and include a NTC.
Question 3: This question is for Mike Quade. Mike, If you had a starting pitching injury this season, where would you pitch Greg Maddux in the rotation?
Mike Quade Answer: First.
"Easy on the words, brother,'' Quade said.
Maddux
I actually think this is going well his involvement with the team. He is learning a lot and probably working in many aspects while he stays in Vegas most of the time with his family.
In a few years when the kids are in college I’m sure he’ll be ready to join the Cubs in a FT capacity.
On a related note I will be posting my zombie story “Bring me the Brain Of Greg Maddux” on my website soon. It’s based on my comment when he retired that I wanted his brain in the Cubs organization the second he was ready.

Alas Maddux recently said he wants to stay "part time"
There was in interview a few weeks back in which he said he was very happy with the part time arrangement and did not see himself ever working in baseball full time even after the kids leave home. One can always hope he will change his mind.
PS I always wanted the Cubs to get Maddux’s brain too, but I was truly shocked when he agreed to come work for them last year. The fact that he is not only coming to the convention, but doing a panel is a good sign of committment. He hates cold weather and he won’t be able to play a round of golf for at least 3 days.

I've no expert on him
But I’ve wondered if he does this part time and see it’s something he is good at and enjoys that in a few years he might have a change of heart. If it isn’t something he enjoys then he can gracefully back out.

Get together
Any more thoughts on a BCB gathering? Maybe I or someone will post a topic next week where we can gather ideas and make plans.
I have to meet Al and Jessica among others.

Aram is going to be at the convention this year...
that is a first I believe
The 2010 Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp ruled!!!!
Makes me wonder if Maddux will be there to help shield the others from as many uncomfortable questions....
If Hendry, Ricketts, and and Kenny were up there alone I imagine it would get ugly real quick.
Bruce Levine just reported on ESPN 1000 the Garza to Cubs deal is imminent...
…a multi player deal that should be annouced today
