Two baseball sources have confirmed that Theo Epstein is on the cusp of leaving his job as general manager of the Red Sox [team stats] to accept a position with the Chicago Cubs that is believed to include powers greater than he has in Boston, with an announcement expected to be made "within the next 24 to 48 hours."

Have at it.

A Boston radio station reported Wednesday that Theo Epstein's deal with the Cubs will be for more than $15 million for five years.

Beat me by a few seconds... I'll delete mine.

Been thinking about this…

If Epstein is to leave Boston, said one source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Red Sox are going to want "something real." Whether that involves a player, money or a combination of the two remains unclear.

Colvin is at best going to be a slightly above average outfielder

Epstein is definitely worth that, especially if Friedman and Cashman are content staying where they are.

Possibly the best thing that could happen to this organization in it's current state

Solid leadership up to is what we need, and myself and many others feel that he is the best candidate to provide that given his history. I’m definitely excited for this to go through! This also most likely eliminate Francona as Cubs manager. After being revealed that the two didn’t leave on the best of terms, I doubt they team up again in Chicago. Who knows though.

Although i’m of the opinion that a GM of Epstein’s caliber would be able to recoup a loss like that in an efficient manner. Your well aware of how he has handled the drafts in Boston. It has been impressive. Epstein’s handling of the draft may be one of the biggest reasons to be excited. He’s done well with his prospects and has spent his plentiful draft money well. Couple Epstein’s draft savvy with Rickett’s money and we should have a solid streamline of prospects in the organization for the next 10 years.

If Theo wants Tito, maybe it makes sense to let Quade finish his contract?

Even with Theo at the helm, I think most people’s expectations for next season is that there’s no chance we catch up to the Cards or Brewers. Quade can be the fall guy for finishing 3rd or 4th next year, and Tito can take over when the team has a chance to compete again.

fascinating, here is the problem

When a senior member decides he wants to go, going back is always bad for the the person…always….there is a trust, a psychological line crossed.

Now it is in interests of mgmt to control the process which is why they counter offer and then when the timing is beneficial for the organization they separate,,,,,Epstein can hold a gun to their head but there are always outs…

He is done if it is this far….though he could make a poor decision.

My guess is the deal and process are details in the Cubs org determining increased responsibility and title….nuance here and there…

8:05pm: Epstein would need Boston’s approval to bring employees with him to Chicago, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney (on Twitter). Carrie Muskat of MLB.com hears that the Cubs made an offer and Epstein is now deciding whether to leave the Red Sox (Twitter link).

Didn't

Josh Byrnes work with Epstein before he went to AZ? That would make for a heckofu assistant GM hire. It’s not easy to make a fan base giddy about front office changes, but going from Hendry/Bush with Gary Hughes as top scout to Epstein/Byrnes would make me dance.

Espn reporting no major league talent...
A source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN’s Karl Ravech that the compensation would involve prospects and/or cash, but no major league players would be part of the deal, following traditional precedent.

"It was a perfect situation for the Brewers," Hill said. "They had a guy up there at the plate [in Counsell] who takes a lot of pride in what he does and he practices those situations, so when it does come up, he gets the bunt down to the right side of the field. They have the perfect guy on first base [in Gomez], who is one of the fastest guys in the league, and they had one of the worst fundamental teams on the field, so it was a perfect situation for them."

Renteria, Lugo, Drew, Matsuzaka, Lackey, Cameron, Scutaro, Crawford, Jenks. Best one’s Marco.

And you people are excited about this man? Seriously? You’re happy with Boston’s reject? This is why the Cubs organization continually fails.

He was actually a pretty decent signing and he’s pretty damn good shortstop. Lugo, Renteria were 8 million dollar stopgaps that did pretty well in Boston. Lugo was part of the WS team. Matsuzaka? I’m pretty sure you were drooling over him to before the Red Sox signed him, we all were.

Isn't that what happened when we got Andy McPhail?

Mc F-A-I-L didn’t want to be a stinking GM anymore. I think it’s called the Peter Principle. And so we got Ed Lynch.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Oct 12, 2011 2:20 AM CDT up reply actions

No

MacPhail was hired to be team president—which when the Tribune was running the team, that meant he was the owner. Not in the sense that he owned the team, but in the sense that he represented the Cubs as the owner would to MLB and he carried out the duties of an owner for the Tribune board. One of the things the owner/team president does is hire the GM, which he did in hiring Ed Lynch.

Epstein is going to do the job of GM plus some additional duties of a team president. I’m going to assume these mostly relate to running the day to day operations of the baseball operations: hiring and firing people and deciding where resources are spent. He reports directly to Tom Ricketts and not to a team president. Now Crane Kenney is staying on as the President of Business Operations, so Epstein will not have to deal with stuff like stadium operations, ticket prices, concessions, marketing, etc. But more importantly, Kenney will have no authority over Epstein. He only has to report to the Ricketts family.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 12, 2011 2:39 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
