Boston Herald: Epstein on brink of joining Cubs
Two baseball sources have confirmed that Theo Epstein is on the cusp of leaving his job as general manager of the Red Sox [team stats] to accept a position with the Chicago Cubs that is believed to include powers greater than he has in Boston, with an announcement expected to be made "within the next 24 to 48 hours."
Have at it.

A Boston radio station reported Wednesday that Theo Epstein's deal with the Cubs will be for more than $15 million for five years.

Been thinking about this…
If Epstein is to leave Boston, said one source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Red Sox are going to want "something real." Whether that involves a player, money or a combination of the two remains unclear.

Ok, let him play good for someone else then...
Quade clearly wasn’t smart enough to play him. Maybe our new manager would be. I would enjoy wearing my Colvin Red Sox shirt, however.

Colvin is at best going to be a slightly above average outfielder
Epstein is definitely worth that, especially if Friedman and Cashman are content staying where they are.

…but, somehow, all I can think about right now is “how are the Cubs going to screw THIS one up?”
As far as what they’d have to give up- I could live with giving up anybody but Castro.
Possibly the best thing that could happen to this organization in it's current state
Solid leadership up to is what we need, and myself and many others feel that he is the best candidate to provide that given his history. I’m definitely excited for this to go through! This also most likely eliminate Francona as Cubs manager. After being revealed that the two didn’t leave on the best of terms, I doubt they team up again in Chicago. Who knows though.
The allure of bringing the two longest-waiting fanbases their championships is too high.

You bring up a good point, Josh
Although i’m of the opinion that a GM of Epstein’s caliber would be able to recoup a loss like that in an efficient manner. Your well aware of how he has handled the drafts in Boston. It has been impressive. Epstein’s handling of the draft may be one of the biggest reasons to be excited. He’s done well with his prospects and has spent his plentiful draft money well. Couple Epstein’s draft savvy with Rickett’s money and we should have a solid streamline of prospects in the organization for the next 10 years.
You'd be pissed if we lost Andrew Cashner

If Theo wants Tito, maybe it makes sense to let Quade finish his contract?
Even with Theo at the helm, I think most people’s expectations for next season is that there’s no chance we catch up to the Cards or Brewers. Quade can be the fall guy for finishing 3rd or 4th next year, and Tito can take over when the team has a chance to compete again.
Or perhaps I’m crazy. :)

Second paragraph
and final paragraph
The report suggests that there are two remaining issues, chiefly that the Sox ownership group is still trying to convince Epstein to stay,
And while the Herald report would indicate that relocation to the Windy City is likely, one source familiar with the matter offered somewhat conflicting information, saying that the report is "not accurate."

Isn't it possible that the compensation that Boston wants is for the Cubs to take on their garbage?
Lackey??
"It was a perfect situation for the Brewers," Hill said. "They had a guy up there at the plate [in Counsell] who takes a lot of pride in what he does and he practices those situations, so when it does come up, he gets the bunt down to the right side of the field. They have the perfect guy on first base [in Gomez], who is one of the fastest guys in the league, and they had one of the worst fundamental teams on the field, so it was a perfect situation for them."
No, please no.
He’s like Zambrano with worse talent.
'Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.'
I just think that Bos would rather have financial flexibility for years to come (dumping Lackey's 80 million), rather than taking a chance on a prospect.
Even Castro.

If they’d rather dump Lackey .. than rather have a guy like Castro.
'Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.'
Castro will never be part of the equation in fact...
…Bruce Levine reported that the Cubs are consulting with MLB to help them figure out what would be appropriate compensation. Don’t worry about Castro, that would never happen and I think the Red Sox realize that.

fascinating, here is the problem
When a senior member decides he wants to go, going back is always bad for the the person…always….there is a trust, a psychological line crossed.
Now it is in interests of mgmt to control the process which is why they counter offer and then when the timing is beneficial for the organization they separate,,,,,Epstein can hold a gun to their head but there are always outs…
He is done if it is this far….though he could make a poor decision.
My guess is the deal and process are details in the Cubs org determining increased responsibility and title….nuance here and there…

Drew definitely wasn't a bust, when healthy he hit the ball out of the park and...
..got on base at a 40% clip.

This makes as much sense

Explain you're fascination with Scutaro
He was actually a pretty decent signing and he’s pretty damn good shortstop. Lugo, Renteria were 8 million dollar stopgaps that did pretty well in Boston. Lugo was part of the WS team. Matsuzaka? I’m pretty sure you were drooling over him to before the Red Sox signed him, we all were.

lugo was an absolutely horrible signing

A one year deal at 8 million wasn't a bad deal, and they won the WS with him
how bad could it have been.

Theo was hired in 02...
Since then, the Red Sox lowest wins in a season was 86…
The Cubs have done that 5 times in the past 20 years…
Yes, I’m excited.

In the five years before he was hired
the Red Sox won 92, 94, 85, 82 and finally 93 games in 2002. It’s not like he started with a 71 win team like he’s going to here.
It’s a great hire if it goes down. He’s a good GM. But let’s not kid ourselves into thinking he performed some kind of miracle in Boston.

Kaplan said that he spoke to someone within MLB that compensation is issue with the Epstein deal and that it will be taken care of without the loss of Castro, Casher, or Garza.

The word is that it won't be an MLB player
MLBTR used the words “prospects and cash”. Prospect(s) would make me think that the Cubs could end up sending a couple guys who aren’t as high on their list as Jackson or Szczur but still quality guys. Maybe one or more of the guys they just drafted?
It wouldn't be 2011, can't be. I would hate for it to be Jackson or Szczur.

NY Daily News reporting
that Theo Epstein will NOT be the new GM of the Cubs.
He’ll be President of Baseball Operations for the Cubs.
Assuming the deal doesn’t fall apart.
I don't know what the difference is.
I just want to win all the things.

Isn't that what happened when we got Andy McPhail?
Mc F-A-I-L didn’t want to be a stinking GM anymore. I think it’s called the Peter Principle. And so we got Ed Lynch.

No
MacPhail was hired to be team president—which when the Tribune was running the team, that meant he was the owner. Not in the sense that he owned the team, but in the sense that he represented the Cubs as the owner would to MLB and he carried out the duties of an owner for the Tribune board. One of the things the owner/team president does is hire the GM, which he did in hiring Ed Lynch.
Epstein is going to do the job of GM plus some additional duties of a team president. I’m going to assume these mostly relate to running the day to day operations of the baseball operations: hiring and firing people and deciding where resources are spent. He reports directly to Tom Ricketts and not to a team president. Now Crane Kenney is staying on as the President of Business Operations, so Epstein will not have to deal with stuff like stadium operations, ticket prices, concessions, marketing, etc. But more importantly, Kenney will have no authority over Epstein. He only has to report to the Ricketts family.
by Josh Timmers on Oct 12, 2011 2:39 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Ricketts has reportedly been after a "team"
So you could see Epstein as President and someone like Rick Hahn or John Coppolella as the #2
I believe he will be acting as both, that's were the increased authority comes in.

It’s just a title. But he might hire someone under him and give him a kind of title too.
by Josh Timmers on Oct 11, 2011 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions
I should say
he will have more responsibilities than he had in Boston. But not on the business end—Crane Kenney will still be in charge there. He just won’t have Larry Lucchino looking over his shoulder anymore.

is also saying that keeping Fleita and Wilken is not an issue for Epstein. Everyone likes Wilken and Fleita can be moved to another job in the organization: I’m guessing in charge of Latin American Scouting.
Exactly as it should be.
Plus, I read one other thing that said that Epstein would not be allowed to raid the Red Sox for assistants; thus good that the Cubs have good people in place in those positions.

Lets not get carried away, Epstein I'm sure will be bringing some of his own people...
