NLCS Game 6: Brewers vs. Cardinals, Sunday 10/16, 7:05 CT

A view of the Sausage Race during Game Two of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by Scott Boehm/Getty Images)

Good news! The ALCS is over and we don't have to listen to Buck and McCarver again until Wednesday!

Bad news! When we do have to listen to them again, either the Cardinals or Brewers will be in the World Series.

Good news! Cubs fans can now root for the Rangers for the next two weeks. Go Rangers!

Bad news! Either the Cardinals or Brewers could actually win the World Series. (Let's hope not.)

No more news. Except this: the roof will be closed at Miller Park tonight because temperatures in Milwaukee are going to be in the 40s. You're probably not watching this game anyway, because the Bears are playing tonight. After the jump, there's info on tonight's game anyway.

Star-divide

Game time for Brewers/Cardinals: 7:05 pm. CDT. Cardinals lead series 3-2. TV: TBS. Announcers: Brian Anderson (play-by-play), Ron Darling (analyst), John Smoltz (analyst), Craig Sager (reporter).

Did you happen to catch Buck & McCarver's "Bartman" reference last night?

These guys are such hypocrites. They’re the ones who keep the Bartman story going, not the fans. We’ve moved on. Isn’t it time that they did?

by jeffmills1972 on Oct 16, 2011 6:32 PM CDT reply actions

Absolutely.

But just wait until the next postseason game at Wrigley Field when a ball goes anywhere near that spot. We’ll never hear the end of it.

How about McCarver's line about Ian Kinsler turning a double play, and where he wants the ball tossed from Elvis Andrus?

That's what you get for managing from your gut.

And I like Ron Roenicke, but the stats were there and they showed that he is terrible against St. Louis.

He has been terrible since

September…Narveson did not look much better but I wonder if he would have been better had he been preparing for a start. STL struggles against left handed pitching…

I'm not cheering either team. I will cheer for the Rangers in the World Series.

And I hope it’s a 4 game sweep without any rain or snow delays so this season can finally come to an end.

by jeffmills1972 on Oct 16, 2011 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

No rain delay or a snow delay

But one game’ll be postponed for a seiche warning!

Yeah, hoping for a 4 game sweep by the Rangers. Cardinals are half-pint Yankees, Rangers deserve at least 1 World Series trophy.

Man, this sucks. I feel bad for the Brewers. I really do.

I have friends that are Brewer fans. I’m from Wisconsin. I’ve been conflicted the whole postseason. I knew I would be.

I'm a Badger, you're a Badger.

But our Cubdom comes above any sort of Wisconsin-ism for the Brewers.

THEY’RE THE BREWERS, MAN, COM’ON.

I wanted the Brewers to win, because my disdain for the Brewers is much, much less than that for the Cardinals, but now we’re forced to cheer for the Rangers.

Yeah, I thought you were pulling for the Brewers

I know, it shouldn’t matter. And if Marmol does his job three weeks ago, this situation doesn’t happen!

6 in BCS. Not surprising, but I don’t like it. If they win out, they are guaranteed to move up at least 2, but will need some help to get higher.

Step Two: Develop an organizational plan

I went to the Baylor game.

My girlfriend’s entire family went to Kansas State. The game was enjoyable, but your quarterback fucking sucks. His motion is atrocious, and he leads all his passes. Even so, it’s a good story, and I hope they beat both OU and OSU.

Snyder is amazing.

There is so little talent on the offensive side of the ball.

After a trip to Lawrence, we go OU, OSU, A&M, and Texas. If we win two of those four, I"ll be elated. But yeah, it’s a nice story thus far.

See, any of those teams can beat anybody on a bad day:

Baylor has one of the best players in the country, Kansas State’s defense is suffocating, A&M is a toss-up, Texas?, and even Missouri could beat OU or OSU. It’s a really deep conference this year.

I think Auburn and LSU could lose, too. Other than head to head.

We’re probably getting ahead of ourselves. Saturday is a big game and will be a test.

Step Two: Develop an organizational plan

by Shanghai Badger on Oct 16, 2011 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No shit.

Cousins is veteran enough to tear our secondary apart. And we almost always lose at East Lansing like it’s a state law or something.

That said, I don’t think anybody can stop our offense. All we need our defense to do is get 1-3 stops a game and the offense can take care of the rest.

The Cardinals are so damn lucky and I think that's what annoys me.

They seem to always be able to find guys who can’t do diddly squat on other teams and yet they go to St. Louis and become solid ballplayers.

But then

we get guys that perform elsewhere and cant do squat in a Cub uniform.

Ron Roenicke is not big time manager

he looks Mike Quade to me but just with better players. What a horrible decision to start Marcum who was clearly done, their fundamentals stunk and all they did was talk all year. He’s been destroyed by LaRussa. This was your chance Brewers and you guys stunk, they’ll never have a better chance to make a world series.

by MikeJW on Oct 16, 2011 8:33 PM CDT reply actions

Then who? LaTroy Hawkins? Pete Vukovich? Jerry Augustine?

Someone other than Gallardo had to pitch one of two games. It’s pretty easy to say Marcum stinks, but you can’t pitch Gallardo twice. And Greinke’s been awful, too.

Step Two: Develop an organizational plan

by Shanghai Badger on Oct 16, 2011 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

i would have started narveson

and made it a bullpen game, he gave his team no chance tio win by starting marcum

by MikeJW on Oct 16, 2011 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I can see Narveson

Although he didn’t exactly light it up, did he?

Step Two: Develop an organizational plan

by Shanghai Badger on Oct 16, 2011 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions

not but you cannot start marcum

when it was obvious he was finished. that’s my point.

by MikeJW on Oct 16, 2011 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand

I just don’t know that there were any other options.

Step Two: Develop an organizational plan

by Shanghai Badger on Oct 16, 2011 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Narveson would have been better

Had he had a chance to prepare for the start….STL has trouble with lefties for some reason.

Another option is that he could have started Gallerdo on short rest and started Wolf on short rest in Game 7 and had Greinke ready just in case. Not ideal but I think it was a better option than Marcum or Narverson.

Cardinals’ offense was #1 in the NL.
Rangers were #3 in AL, but that was still nearly 100 runs more than the Cardinals.

Cardinas’ ERA+ was below league average.
Rangers’ were 3rd in all of baseball.

I like the Rangers because Cruz is on a tear, their shutdown 8-9 guys, and their starters. Since NL has home field, I’ll take Rangers in 6.

But how hot were the Cardinals?

Besides the usual specious muscle power, how strong was their overall lineup. I didn’t see the NLCS, but I saw the ALCS. The Rangers were like a buzzsaw attached to a locomotive. They mowed through the Tigers bullpen and their batters in most innings. I hear the pieces are being shipped back to Detroit. The last time I saw a team move like that well of a well-oiled machine, it was the 2007 Red Sox (though I see more roids in St. Louis than I do in Dallas. Might be an exposure issue, being in the Central Division).

I favor the Rangers in the WS and based on what I’ve seen, the Rangers seem incredbly strong. I rooted for the Rockies in Rocktober, and the way the Roid Sox dismembered the Rockies then reminds me of the way the Rangers defanged & declawed the Tigers now.

Nolan does have some kinda magic. Rangers sucked when W owned them, Rangers sucked when whoever the previous guy was owned them (though that guy forced the team to court, at least he was no McCourt. Of course had he been, I suspect someone would have taken some Texas Justice on him. Though if the team were in Albuquerque, the owner might be a McCloud), and Nolan Ryan buys them. Boom! Instant magic! World Series #1, World Series #2, perhaps even a trophy or two.

For as much as I hate the Cardinals, you gotta give them credit...

They went without Wainwright for the entire season. Can you imagine where they’d be with him? They battled with injuries and didn’t make excuses for it unlike some other teams. They were able to mix and match successfully and win the big games when they needed to. Sure, it ticks me off that Marmol blew those saves which helped put the Cardinals in this position. But it doesn’t really matter if it was the Cardinals or whoever, the Cubs still should have won those games and didn’t. This just wasn’t our year, folks. I’m more than ready to take a match to the calendar year and burn it. Looking forward to 2012 and, hopefully, an announcement soon on Epstein.

One of ’em stays with their team vs. both of them ending up on different teams? Anyone know which teams want who, I mean, besides the Cubs?

I hope the Cubs focus on Fielder, not Pujols. Haven’t seen anything suspect from Fielder yet. His power comes from his girth, like Babe Ruth. Now if only he’d switch to a hickory bat (they used to use ’em before the ascension of ash. Heavier, but added more power for huskier players who had the mass to wield those clubs)

I hate the F---n Cardinals.

You gotta understand, in the community I live in, they are everywhere. Cardinal flags hang from front doors. Families have their pictures made in matching Cardinal wear. My Facebook page tonight is just disgusting. I just had to log off and get out before I vomited. Every fair weather Cardinal fan is coming out to join the die-hards. I was at the game on September 24 and all I can say is I hope Carlos Marmol is f—king happy. If they win the World Series (God, please, no!!!!) I may have to leave the area until April.

They have fair weather Cardinal fans there?

I thought Missouri was always dyed in the dark blue area… with miscolored birds (I guess cardinals aren’t native to MO). I have a hard time imagining anyone not being a raging Cardinals fan in Missouri or Cards Country hinterlands like southern Illinois, western Kentucky, parts of Oklahoma, Indiana, Arkansas and wherever else (unless they’re not a sports fan). They seem like an all-or-none kind of fanbase.

I guess there must be.

A DJ on one of our local radio stations was on a rant one day last week about closet Cardinal fans. He said they shouldn’t be allowed to wear red.

I don’t want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it.

It happens any time a team goes deep into the playoffs.

So this isn’t surprising.

I know, I just meant with the Cards

St. Louis and all around there seems all on or all off with the Cardinals. It didn’t seem like there would be an inbetween. Strangely, even in 2006 in central/southern Illinois I never remembered seeing those miscolored birds popping out of the woodwork, err, farmfields & swamps.

And we'll never get to see

a sausage race in the World Series. I was really looking forward to that.

Obsession

Card fans here in central Ill. seem to care more about ribbing the Cub fans than beating the Brewers. I remember the last time they won in 2006 Fox showed a sign in the stands saying, " Don’t you wish you were here Cub fans?" Even during the ultimate event(WS) they had to put the Tigers aside and jab at Cub fans. What morans. Myself, if the Cubs EVER get there, the Cards will be the LAST thing I’ll be thinking about.

I can vouch for Cubs vs. Cards

I know the genesis of the rivalry down there too. It’s more an anti-Cubs thing than a pro-Cards thing.
1) It’s proximity. Many of the Card cities in Illinois, when they want to go to “the big city”, go to St. Louis (zoo, baseball, museums, airport, etc). That’s just how baseball geography is.
2) Downstate vs. upstate. Downstate (central & southern Illinois) tends to hate the influence Chicago has on the state and its political atmosphere. Of course, their griping is a little bizarre since what, 10/12ths the state’s population is in the Chicago metro area and their politicians are just as corrupt (yes, Springfield is a cesspool, an apocalyptic cesspool, but still a cesspool). Southern IL has a good ol boy crony system for local politics.

.
White Sox fans are the same way… except they can actually root for their team and not against the other team. They have some legitimate gripes, given they won a World Series before the Cubs did after a nearly long drought and it was treated with ‘meh’ by everyone (and the 2M Blackhawks fans appearing out of nowhere was salt in the wound. I still wonder where all those people came from. Almost never saw a hockey fan or heard hockey talked about). And the White Sox beat some strong teams on the way to the WS and they swept their opponent too.
(and not talked about, at least their sluggers were clean by all indications, Thomas & Thome. Cubs can’t say the same about Sosa, but Cardinals are one to speak…)

They can pay him....

in donuts. They have to plan for being contenders next year, and with Epstein with the Cubs, they have to find ways to weaken a rival that will be growing in strength (I don’t think 2012 will be a good year for the Cubs, but unless Epstein leaves his sense in Boston, it should at least be somewhat better than 2011).

You might as well call Dallas my second city( except the Cowboys-yuck)

This is the second time in a row that I’ve rooted for a team on the big stage. I also rooted for the Mavs against that ugly three-headed trio from Miami.

If the Rangers win,

2011 is going to be considered an epic year for Dallas sports.
