Not every joke needs a sarcasm font.

Does somebody actually expect our biggest rivals to give one of our players a PS share?

however the premise that the two blown saves are the point to moment in which the cardinals made it to the playoffs, were not taken as a joke.

Honestly, the Theriot game is the hardest one to swallow.

Marmol losing his command sucks, but at least it wasn’t a willful decision to do something stupid. Not throwing a fastball to Theriot was just infuriatingly dumb. I’d love to know whose decision it was to call that pitch. It might not be fair to blame it entirely on Marmol — though he can’t be absolved of guilt, either.

So many players on the 2011 Cubs had disappointing seasons, from (Colvin, Byrd, Dempster, Soriano, Zambrano). But Marmol probably fell the farthest. After addressing the Zambrano situation, Theo should probably figure out what to do with Marmol.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 17, 2011 11:30 AM CDT reply actions

I'd trade Marmol if the Cubs could find a taker.

His contract isn’t huge, but it would be a cost savings. The Cubs have other closer candidates, including Andrew Cashner and Chris Carpenter.

Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation

by Al Yellon on Oct 17, 2011 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd definitely consider trading him.

The Cubs have a bad history of selling low, and it’s possible Marmol has some issue — conditioning? mechanics? — that a better pitching coach than Riggins and a better manager than Quade could fix. The contract is pretty big (about $17 million over the next two seasons). With that price and coming off a bad year, the Cubs might not be able to get much in return or they’d have to pay some of the freight to move Marmol.

That’s why I think the Marmol situation is something Theo needs to address quickly. If Marmol’s a lost cause, then the Cubs should deal him regardless of the low return. But if he can bounce back — even halfway between 2010 and 2011 Marmol — then he’s worth hanging onto, even if it’s just so he can be dealt to a contender in July.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 17, 2011 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Marmol looked out of shape during the season.

Now, that can be fixed. But maybe Theo could make it someone else’s problem.

Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation

by Al Yellon on Oct 17, 2011 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I would only trade him ...

if another team was willing to give a good return or if he was beyond hopeless. He was bad in 2011. But, IIRC, he struggled for a good bit of 2008 after a dynamite 2007 and a good 2009 and 2010.

Also, while I like Carpenter and Cashner, one has barely pitched in the majors and one is a big injury risk. It might make the most sense to start the season with Marmol with designs on either demoting him from the closer role or trading him midseason.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 17, 2011 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

If you can't trade Marmol..

I’d like to see the Cubs find another closer, and put Marmol back in the ‘super-setup’ role Piniella used him for when Wood was closing for us regularly. As we’ve seen this postseason, you can win games by getting out of a jam in the middle innings, too. Maybe taking away the pressure of do-or-die-for-the-save would work for Marmol.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Oct 17, 2011 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Marmol was a pretty good closer in 2010.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 17, 2011 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he was better as an "X-factor" reliever.

I’m thinking along the lines of if you grab an “ace” starter, all the rest of your rotation ‘improves’ as your former #1 is now your #2, and so on down the line. The new “ace” improves every spot in your rotation.

A new closer with Marmol coming back to form (and being allowed to pitch more than one inning at a time) could improve a few spots in the bullpen. It’s just a thought, Marmol would be an expensive set-up man to be sure.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Oct 17, 2011 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

With the number of pitches he throws...

… I can’t imagine him being able to throw more than one inning at a time very often.

by Al Yellon on Oct 17, 2011 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Marmol...

…has a tendency to fall in love with his slider and the problem is, his slider this year was not near what it has been in the past (maybe a pitching coach with a clue could have helped here).

Also, when you know a hitter can’t hit the heat, that is when the catcher should call time out and go talk to the pitcher if he shakes him off. That is where leadership and having a plan comes into play.

As big a jerk as Zambrano was this year ...

he was dead on when he called out the bad pitch selection. The fact that Quade and Riggins were clueless in this instance — against a guy they had watched play for years — was one of the lowest moments for the 2011 Cubs.

And that is saying a lot.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 17, 2011 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

To me...

…it was even worse when Pujols hit those two walk off homers against them.

First, you had spellcheck throwing his “spinning” sliders up there and Pujols was just sitting on it and then Rodriguez threw him a “cookie”, when he should have given him nothing to hit.

That was about as stupid as you could get.

Whoever swept the Braves...

…the last week, probably deserves a share as well.

Anyway, everything tends to play itself out over 162, which is the beauty of baseball. Although they are the Cards, you have to respect what that organization stands for and when you look at a guy like LaRussa, it really sinks in, how much of a goof Quade was.

I may have said this before.

The Cardinals are like Marsha Brady.

Everything always goes better for them than it should. They make Joel Pineiro a 15 game winner. They can win the pennant even after their best pitcher goes down for the year. They use interchangeable outfielders and relievers. It’s unreal.

And the Cubs are like Jan Brady.

Nothing goes right for us. We overpay for middling starters (Jason Marquis). If we lose one of our best players, it starts a cascade reaction that wrecks seasons (Lee in 2006, Ramirez in 2009). Our interchangeable parts immediately malfunction or eventually malfunction. It’s also unreal.

Go Rangers. Please, don’t let the Cardinals get another ring.

Pretty Amazing what the cardinals where able to work with

They had lost their best starter, no competent closer for most of the season, lost Rasmus, and added an aging Berkman, also their defense was terrible. They also had injuries to Pujols and Holliday.

Somehow the miracle worker, Dave Duncan was able to fix Lohse and fix Carpenter during the 2nd half.

Allen Craig, John Jay, and Freese contributed and most of these guys weren’t even considered prospects. Why can’t we develop nobodies? Molina also had one of his best years.

I swear the Cubs could release Byran Lahair then sign Pujols ,who becomes the next Soriano and then the Cardinals turn Lahair into an All star.

Damn the Cardinals and their Baseball Voodoo

Is Papelbon just wishful thinking?

Granted he blew a few big saves in September but I think he’s a free agent and one has to imagine he has a good relationship with Theo Epstein. He could use a change of scenery after how they fell apart.

Having Marshall, Marmol, Wood (hopefully) and Papelbon in the bullpen would make one of the strongest bullpens in the NL Central.

The Sep 24th game still bothers me, i went out to watch college football that day yet I couldn’t take my eyes off the Cubs/Cards game knowing a Cubs win would more or less eliminate the Cards. Marmol’s complete meltdown was stunning and ruined the day for me as the Cards knew they were right back in it with that win, from sudden death to new found life. Al, every team has blown saves, and losses that they should have won

to pin the season on a hand full of games to get the Cubs into the post season talks is comical. This reminds me of Buck saying how the Cardinals lost the game, not the Cubs winning it (for example).

You are taking credit away from a team instead of giving credit where it was earned, trying to make excuses for the Cardinals getting in. They won their games, they won in the post season (without the help of Marmol) and are now in the WS. Let it be.
