2011 World Series Game 2: Rangers vs. Cardinals, Thursday 10/20, 7:05 CT
You probably won't believe this, but there is actual baseball going on tonight, not just Theo/Jed talk. No wonder Bud Selig doesn't like this stuff going on during his World Series? I mean, what are we thinking?
(In case you think I'm serious about that, click here.)
Never fear, Cubs fans. Just because the Cardinals won Game 1, doesn't mean they need to be anointed as champions. If the Rangers win tonight, they steal home field advantage back.
Colby Lewis faces Jaime Garcia in tonight's Game 2. The Rangers are likely a better team facing a lefthander. It'll be cold and windy again tonight in St. Louis, better for pitchers.
Complete game info after the jump.
Game time for Rangers/Cardinals: 7:05 pm. CDT. Cardinals lead series 1-0. TV: Fox. Announcers: Joe Buck & Tim McCarver (get your mute button ready).

I'm looking at Gaslamp Ball
to see their reaction to Jed Hoyer leaving.
All I can say is “Stay Classy, San Diego.” And yes, that’s sarcasm.
Oooooooh this is a good one

they do seem mildly distraught
not a good time to thank them for the lack of compensation.

I still think there is
a chasm between the rich teams and poor teams. I think any CBA that doesn’t address it is a band aid. That said, since the Cubs have an ownership willing to spend in the draft and in free agency, I’m good with half the league being glorified farm teams. Any owner that signs a CBA that doesn’t address it ought to be ignored when crying about the chasm between rich and poor organizations.
There may be no strike. I hope there isn’t.
I'm a Cubs fan. The Jaded Bitterness comes as a Standard Feature.
What I'm reading
is that the only differences left are draft slotting and an international draft and that the owners aren’t going to risk a work stoppage over that.
It gets done. They were hoping to announce it this week, but like Theo Epstein, such predictions were premature.

If those are the only issues,
then small market team fans ought to stifle if their owners aren’t pushing for a solution.

I hate the Cardinals
There was a chick wearing a Cardinals shirt on my ride into work in Brisbane today. I wanted to spit on her.
On the upside MLB sent us a world series package trying to promote the series in Australia and I got a call fall classic shirt. Hopefully when I wear it I’m reminded of a Rangers win…

That's the kind of hate
I think the Cardinals feed off of. They’re some kind of supernatural hatesponge beast.
Aussie Cardinals is strange. Given the Outback, one would imagine the Rangers would fit in more there. If the Cubs rebranded themselves as Koala, they might have a fair shot at appealing to eastern Australia.

I reckon she was probably a US tourist,
it was down by the river in the city where all the sightseers go.
There was no shortage of Americans who chuckled at my support for the Cubs when I was over there a couple of months ago. I was in Houston for the last game of the season and all the Cards fans were ragging on me as I cheered on the Astros.
"Keep pushin' til' it's understood. And these badlands start treating us good."
One of my internet groups has a lot of Australians.
One thought I was exaggerating to make a poin (which is something I do often) when I said the Cubs hadn’t won it all in at that time 101 years. Sadly I had to tell her I wasn’t.

Should talk about being an Expos fan,
have the cap, say how much you love the team but somehow haven’t been able to hear anything about them in the past few years…
Or be like a Royals or Orioles fan. People would wonder how the heck overlooked teams like that in forgettable states/regions could have a following on the other side of the world.

McCarver/Buck
God I hate this duo. I want to kick something.
Although Buck is tolerable at football. It may be the difference between Aikman being his partner over McCarver.
Go Rangers. Have a very good internet friend who’s a secretary in the executive offices. Met Nolan Ryan along with a few other Rangers people at her wedding last winter.
Nothing happens unless it's first a dream
Why did Fox ever choose these two?
They could have Seth Macfarlane as Peter Griffin & Hank Azaria as Homer Simpson host the game and they’d do better at it than these two.
Did Nolan Ryan put the groom into a headlock and punch him a few times to wish the married couple good luck in the future?

If Fox wants to know one reason why ratings are down...
… it’s the broadcast team. No one likes them. Replacing them would be a good start, as ESPN did with their much-disliked Sunday night team.

For the record
Dan Castellaneta is the voice of Homer Simpson, not Hank Azaria. Homer does have baseball/softball credentials, though.

Halloween
OKay off topic.
I was finishing my costume for Halloween party tonight.
Anyone here ever do a Cubs related Halloween costume?
I went as Sissyphus to a mythology/history party theme.
I put on a toga, wore plastic fig leaves in my hair and my “rock” was an inflatable baseball. I said Sissyphus was history’s first Cubs fan
For those unfamiliar he was condemed by the Gods to push a rock up a hill and just when he got close to the top it would crash to the bottom and he’d have to start all over again.
Won most creative.

Sissyphus?
That some kind of pansy Sisyphus? That said, yeah, creative and it does sum up some of what it’s like to be a Cubs fan.

Compensation Bragging Contest
It sounds like 3 prospects to BoSox (probably Daytona or higher) and 2 to SD (Daytona or lower).
My guesses Logan Watkins, Marco Carillo, and Marwin Gonzalez to Boston.
Jeff Antigua and Greg Rohan to San Diego.
I'm a Cubs fan. The Jaded Bitterness comes as a Standard Feature.
I don't think we part with Antigua
And Boston is going to want more than Watkins, Carrillo and Gonzalez. Carrillo’s not a prospect at all, really. Gonzalez and Watkins are both utility infielder types, although I like Watkins’ upside to be more than that.
I think if Boston doesn’t get Trey McNutt, they’re going to demand either Chris Carpenter or Rafael Dolis.
by Josh Timmers on Oct 21, 2011 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions
Dolis would be fine.
Carp less so, but so be it. Trying to be different.

Latest Theo news
Red Sox are demanding the Water Tower in compensation for Theo. The Cubs have countered by offering a cow and a lantern.

Al, re the new 15/15 schedule...
Has anyone put together a schedule where days off are included. It sounds nice, but it seems there may be serieses starting on Sunday on occasion. There aren’t that many Mondays.
Example.
Monday, day off for all. Series T-Th. Series F-Su. Series M-W Series TH-Sat. Series Sun-Tue.
Day off for all.
I'm a Cubs fan. The Jaded Bitterness comes as a Standard Feature.
I doubt anyone would want a schedule like that.
More likely, everyone would play Fri-Sat-Sun series, and then you’d likely alternate weeks where you’d have a Mon-Tue-Wed series or a Tue-Wed-Thu series… everyone would have an off day every week that way.

Are there enough calendar days to do that?
All teams have 17 day stretches of games now.
I'm a Cubs fan. The Jaded Bitterness comes as a Standard Feature.
I haven't double checked that.
But I don’t think teams would like starting series on Sundays.

Obviously not.
I’ve heard the ;everyone loves 3 game serieses’ and ‘it all works out’, but I haven’t seen a projection that wouldn’t start in March and end on October 10th or so.

Yeah, I'd have to actually sit down with a calendar and see if that would work.
It might not.

Dave Kaplan sez
That despite Boston’s protests to the contrary, a compensation package has been agreed upon and it does not include anyone on the 40 man roster. The hold up is that John Henry is just having a hissy fit, stalling this out as long as he can out of spite. (That’s not an exact quote from Kaplan, but that’s certainly the impression he’s leaving.)
If it’s no one on the 40 man, that rules out Carpenter or Dolis. It means McNutt is still in play, although we’ve heard he’s not on the table.
One guy who might be in the package might be Jeff Beliveau. He’s not on the 40 man and he’s from Rhode Island. I can see the Red Sox having some interest.
tyvm
Henry? A hissy fit?

It would seem more likely that Lucchino is the one having the hissy fit, not Henry.

King Albert getting "ripped" in the press?
At least by Jeff Passan anyway. Is there a chink in King Albert’s armor. I love it.

This part is awesome...talking about Pujols' boo-boo in the 9th...
Tony La Russa, not sure exactly what happened? Sorry. Not buying it. He was protecting Pujols because that’s what the Cardinals have done for a decade, and that’s why he’d be best served re-signing this offseason and not going to a place where someone may dare call him out for an error. Here, they genuflect. They know no better.

You wanna get Epstein?
Here’s how you get him. Lucchino pulls a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue! That’s the Chicago way, and that’s how you get Epstein!
The Chicago Way?
I go back to Mike Royko’s re-making of the city slogan to “Ubi Est Mea” (“Where’s Mine?”).
That’s how the Red Sox are acting.
