I wouldn't mind Soriano going

but there is no way he’s the biggest problem on the team.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions

For sure he's grossly overpaid

But a guy that hits 25+ HR’s and gets 80+ RBI is a useful player. He would hardly be the highest on the list, but with 3 years remaining, there might not be a better time to move him. With a year or two left, teams may just wait for the Cubs to outright release him rather than taking on any of the salary.

by jerry morales rules on Oct 24, 2011 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually, that's an argument for why Soriano should be traded first.

I mean, deciding whether Zambrano or Soriano should be traded first is a little like picking your favorite flavor of ice cream. But Soriano’s value will not get higher (another year in left on those legs will cause further deterioration). Zambrano’s value probably can’t get lower.

I’d love to see them both gone. But, in a vacuum — i.e. not assessing trade partners’ needs and wants — trading Soriano probably should be priority one.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Soriano is a good teammate and Z is not

Having Z return to the team will stain the organization going forward. I really can’t see how it’s even possible that Z is given any sort of permission to be anywhere near the team or the other players. He has to be dealt with first.

While I agree that if they are going to move Soriano, the market for him will not be higher than now, I also believe that if the Cubs keep him, they can still be fine. We are, after all, talking about maybe a savings of $7-8M a year. The Cubs will at least be on the hook for around $10M or so. Saving $7-8M on a guy who is at least somewhat useful isn’t a top concern for me.

by jerry morales rules on Oct 24, 2011 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, from all accounts

Soriano is a hard working and is very helpful to the younger Latin players. He was even helpful translating for Fukudome with the little Japanese he knew.

I don’t think any of us would have a problem with Soriano if he was making $3.5 million. Unfortunately, that’s probably all the salary relief we could get by trading him.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I think that's understating the Soriano problem.

Obviously, he’s not a bad guy, and I don’t question his work ethic. But he’s just terrible defensively, and he’s going to get worse. Plus, he limits our free agent options because any outfielder we sign for the next three seasons can’t be a left fielder. That would be OK if Soriano still put up 2007-08-style numbers. But I think we can write off any returns to that kind of form.

I understand that keeping Zambrano sends a very bad message. But, without assessing the market, I would still try to trade Soriano first to an AL team who figures that Soriano for three years as a DH will be more valuable than Soriano for three years as an outfielder.

Note that I’m not saying we should keep Zambrano. But the reasons we would rather trade Soriano after Zambrano (as far as listing priorities) are exactly why we could actually get rid of Soriano.

I really don’t understand the whole “he hit 30 home runs and drove in 80”, conveniently not mentioning anything else (this is NOT directed to you Josh).
The fact is he’s a mediocre player with WAR the last 3 years cumulative of 4.4. (0.0, 3.1, 1.3)

For this team to improve that is one of the primary positions we can get better at. For me at least, it has NOTHING to do with his salary. He’s a nice guy, bad ballplayer.

Sori isn’t in my top 3

Sori is overpaid and bad defense, but the Cubs would have to swollow likely a good chunk of $$$ trading him. It’d be great if the Cubs found someone who wanted pay him his 19 ish mill a year. But I don’t see that

Well, now you're shifting the argument.

Are we keeping Soriano because he still has value — or are we keeping him because he’s untradeable because he no longer has value?

I’ve said from the start that if you’re assessing the two worst Cubs contracts (Soriano and Zambrano) that in a vacuum — and without a more thorough evaluation of the potential market for both players — I’d work to trade Soriano first. Soriano’s value will not get higher. Zambrano’s, probably, will not get lower.

Lastly, keep in mind that the best suitor for Zambrano is reportedly not interested.

That’s a good question which Josh mentioned up-thread. How much of his WAR came as a batter (and as a baserunner from his own at-bats) and how much as a pinch runner? Anyone?

by John916 on Oct 24, 2011 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

He'd be a good $9 million DH, I think.

But there are only 14 teams that need a DH, and several of those (Kansas City, Tampa Bay, Oakland, Toronto) don’t have the resources to put $9 million into a player like Soriano. Other teams in the AL either already have big-money DHs, they use the spot to get a couple years out of an aging slugger (Posada) or they do a sort of rotation with their first basemen and outfielders (like the White Sox).

I’ve been a proponent of a Soriano-Dunn trade, but even that has serious problems.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Vlad Guerrero

signed a one year, 8 million dollar contract last off-season. What makes you think that an AL team would want Soriano at three-years, $27 million? (Or maybe you meant $3 million a year for three years. If so, I’d just as soon cut him.)

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Hideki Matsui

signed a one-year, $4.25 million last season. There is no market in the AL for DHs anymore.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

by ClarkFan on Oct 24, 2011 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a good point.

I meant $9 million a year — because I think he’ll be worth that as a DH in 2012. But it is essentially a 3-year deal. Crap.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem as I see it

is that his contract is what is limiting our free agent options, and there isn’t anyone that’s going to take that on. As far as the idea that an AL team is looking to make him a DH, have you seen the DH market the past few off seasons? Vlad Guerrero can hardly find work.

As far as his defense goes, I know he looks bad out there but the numbers don’t support that he’s terrible. I suspect this is a problem with the defensive metrics, but I am comfortable saying that he’s probably a better left fielder than he looks. I’m not saying he’s as good as the numbers say, but he’s probably not as bad as our eyes are telling us either.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed on the DH market (see above).

But this is a player who has had serious leg problems. Let’s say you’re right and he’s not as bad defensively as he appears. Shouldn’t we try to trade him before he gets really awful (by any measure) and/or time in left eats away at his offensive productivity?

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

Soriano for Dunn.

That’s the only way I see it happening. I think the chances that Dunn will be better in 2013-14 on an NL are MUCH higher than Soriano’s. Now, I don’t think this is at all likely, unfortunately. Kenny seems to be banking on Dunn bouncing back.

To your point above — why would you cut Soriano instead of saving $9 million (total) over the course of three years in a trade? It’s not a lot of money, but it’s better than what the Cubs would get if Soriano cleared waivers and signed elsewhere.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Why?

Do you really think Dunn will be worse (on an NL team) in 2013-14 than Soriano? Keep in mind that Dunn is a little more than a year removed from 38 home runs — a total Soriano has never even approached as a Cub. Plus, Dunn is years younger.

I’d rather the Cubs have neither guy on the the team. But I’d take Dunn, given his age, his price tag, his relative lack of injury (chronic or otherwise) and his more recent success, over Soriano.

Why are you guys so certain of this?

Rather, why are you so certain that a 32-year-old guy with career OPS of .876 (and an OPS of .892 in 2010) will be worse for the next three seasons than a 35-year-old guy with a career .829 OPS and none higher than .892 since 2007?

Throw in the fact that Dunn has no significant history of injuries, that he’s no worse than Soriano defensively, that he could add lefty balance to the lineup and the fact that he’s $12 million cheaper and I don’t know how you couldn’t be all for this trade.

Dunn had a terrible 2011. As far as I can tell, that’s the only thing you’re using to make this call.

Now, I’m not saying the White Sox would be interested, necessarily. But I don’t know how on Earth the Cubs wouldn’t be.

How much of an improvement is there?

We don’t. Soriano had 26 home runs last season. Dunn had 11. Dunn had 27 extra base hits last year. Soriano had 27 doubles.

Here’s where scouting comes in. Soriano still has enough bat speed to crush a fastball. He can’t recognize a slider in the dirt, but he can still turn on a fastball. Dunn no longer has enough bat speed to even turn on a fastball. This is why I don’t think he’s coming back.

Dunn was a young player with old player's skills

Those guys tend to fall off a cliff in their early 30s. Boog Powell, Mo Vaughn are two examples I can think of.

Soriano’s skills are eroding, but they’re unlikely to go so fast. He was very athletic when he was younger. They tend to age better.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought OBP was considered pretty ageless.

Anyway, haven’t Soriano’s skills already eroded pretty quickly?

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

If you get your OBP from walks

that’s old person’s skills. If you draw walks and have a high AVE, that’s not so old.

My point is that Soriano I believe that Soriano is likely to be a better player than Dunn next season.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

What about 2013-14?

I’m far more concerned about those two years than 2012.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they'll both be so bad by 2014

that it won’t make any difference. They’ll likely both get cut.

by Josh Timmers on Oct 24, 2011 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Josh is right.

No team is going to lock up the DH with Soriano at any meaningful salary when there are Guerrero, Thome, Matsui, etc. type players available every off-season at a more reasonable price. The Cubs would have to pick 75% of the Sori deal to have any hope of trading him.

John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

by rlpete on Oct 24, 2011 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, would that be such a bad thing?

Let’s say the Cubs have to eat 75 percent of the contract. That’s still a savings of $13.5 million.

I don’t have any problem with him personally. But I’m puzzled at how loathe people are to ditch him considering his leg injuries, his age and the fact that the Cubs can’t DH him.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

It wouldn't be against it

but then the Cubs still need to sign a replacement. I’m not on-board the Tony Campana in LF solution.

John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

by rlpete on Oct 24, 2011 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agreed there.

But … we’d have $13-14 million (combined with the Ramirez/Silva/Grabow money) to do it.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Oct 24, 2011 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

But some has to go to replacing Ramirez in that case.

I’m not really disagreeing with you in any case. If they can move him then fine. I just think he is going to cost a lot to move.

John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

by rlpete on Oct 24, 2011 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

That's why the Dunn-Soriano trade makes sense.

Dunn needs a change of scenery and a non-DH role to get his swing back. Soriano will be a lot easier to watch the next three years as a DH.

Even if the Cubs had to pay the difference in salaries ($12 million) they still have money to use on the rotation, in left and at third. And they get a 32-year-old lefty power hitter who is one year removed from a near-.900 OPS whose defense isn’t any worse at first than Soriano’s is in left.

by ClarkFan on Oct 24, 2011 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

LF is a pretty easy position to fill

To get someone good, the Cubs would need to spend more than they get in relief on Soriano. But a decent LF with reasonable offense shouldn’t cost $10M/year.

by ClarkFan on Oct 24, 2011 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Dunn was charged with 13 errors in 2010...

… a large number for a 1B. Ian Desmond was the primary SS for them, he made 34 errors.

Compare that to Pena & Castro in 2011: 8 and 29.

(If you’re going to pay all but $1 or $2 million to get someone else to take him, I think you’d be better off “announcing your presence with authority”, Theo.)

Honestly, I don't care what happened the last two weeks.

I want to know what he’s gonna do first, like cut, trade, or fire somebody.

Ill probably be at the meetings again this year - if I can afford the ticket

last year was pretty cool.

I know a lot of people do not like Randy Bush but he was one of the nicest men I have ever met. His business card is still on the fridge.

This has nothing to do with Theo

but I thought I’d mention it. I follow many of the Cubs minor leaguers on Twitter. Twitter is now telling me that people I follow also follow @Playboy and that I might want to as well.

Ah, to be young again.

I saw on reddit the other day

that Facebook somehow recommended he/she become friends with their therapist. Try explaining that one.

The one I want to know

is that Twitter recommended I follow my sister-in-law. There were absolutely no followers in common between the two of us. She has absolutely no interest in baseball. I have no idea how Twitter knew we were related. It scared the crap out of me.

I think this Dunn / Soriano conversation is funny.

I wouldn’t trade Soriano for Dunn under most any condition, but I would get rid of Soriano under most any condition.

The only scenario that I could see is if no cash changes hands

Then the Cubs have instantly saved $4M/year, the baseline “move Soriano” scenario. Then it doesn’t matter if Dunn can no longer find his butt with both hands.

The coverage starts tomorrow

at 10:30 on CSN. Theo will be on CTL tomorrow night at 5:30. I can only imagine what Kaplan will ask him.

Theo confirms he was at the Starbucks

Heard on the Score as I was driving home, someone had asked him today at lunch if he was at Starbucks on that Saturday… he said yes. Guess the guy in the purple shirt was right after all.

Whole article is gold.
Whether it’s getting bottled water from the dugout during a game, using the team’s training room for his personal use or refusing to give up the biggest office at Wrigley Field to the new owner, Kenney has angered someone in every nook and cranny at Wrigley.

Theo! Good job, Tommy Boy!

Holy hell save room for me.

He wouldn’t give up his office (the largest) to the new owner? That’s on Ricketts then for not moving his stuff to a supply closet.

Just when I'm happier than I've been about the Cubs in years I read this;

“I’m not fully convinced Crane is completely out of the baseball side,” the source said. “Let’s wait and see.”

And a cold chill goes down my spine…
