Michael Wuertz, anyone?
The Oakland A's have released a product of the Cubs farm system and a pitcher once described as having the best slider in baseball. I guess it's safe to say who won the Michael Wuertz for Richie Rob.Nett (deleted) and Justin Sellers (is he still around?) deal: That would be former Cubs GM prospect Billy Beane, who did get an outstanding 2.4 fWAR season out of Wuertzy in 2009 before injuries, walks and home run balls killed his value in 2010 and '11. For what it's worth, his K rate stayed strong in both years (9.08 and 8.55, respectively). He's 32 and will be 33 next season. Worth a spring training invite ... for old time's sake?

Nope.
He’ll be 33 in December and has had two bad years in a row. Pass.

It's a STI for a spot low in the bullpen
Couldn’t hurt…
If those are the choices...
…I’ll take anyone.

I guess a non-roster invite to ST doesn't hurt,
but what’s the point? Relief pitching is the our biggest strength on the big league club and we have more young relief types that are close.
Well, you can never have too much pitching.
I’m guessing Wuertz is pretty familiar with Des Moines. The Cubs could stash him there and give him a try during the season should the need arise.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
He never should have been traded.
He was a decent bullpen guy. I guess a STI is ok but I’m not expecting much.
John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?
Feel the same way.
I thought at the time that the Cubs were giving up on him too early. And it turns out they did — at least for that one season.

Justin Sellers
saw some time in the big leagues with the Dodgers this year. And yes, I would throw Wuertz a non roster invite. Why not?

So he did.
Baseball-Reference reports a .583 OPS in 139 PAs. I’m guessing he’s an all-glove, no-bat utility infielder type.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
That is odd.
Looks like he’s hit the Independent Leagues.

Wood, Wuertz, gee who’s next?
I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.

Ha, I remember Bob Brenly ripping into him.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
To be fair,
He was part of Dusty Baker’s inner circle of players whose talents were completely misused. He went the way of Latroy Hawkins, Neifi Perez, and who could forget Jose Macias.
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
Those guys should all be...
…in a bizarro world Hall of Fame somewhere.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
If the Cubs hire a real pitching coach...
… I’d absolutely take a flyer on Wuertz. I’m curious about his numbers the last two years, particularly his innings pitched. But with the nature of relief pitchers, I would not at all be surprised to see him have a few more solid years.
From bad to Wuertz?
Eh, pass. He can throw his 55-foot slider somewhere else.

It was the best slider in baseball for a while.
