In my opinion, the Cubs never had a chance. But in case anyone thought it was a possibility...that chance is over.

No surprise

He wanted to stay in NY and the Yankees couldn’t afford to let him leave.

That money is insane

I wonder what he’ll have left or who he’ll have eaten by year 4 of that contract. As big as he is, he’ll flame out.

Guys, hitting is not about muscle. It's simple physics. Calculate the velocity, v, in relation to the trajectory, t, in which g, gravity, of course remains a constant.... It's not complicated. - George Costanza

it's a 1 year extension

He was already going to get the first 4 years. The Yankees just added year 5.

They certainly overpaid

Unfortunately for them, they didn’t have much choice. They need Sabathia for the next few years (much more than Sabathia needs them), and both they and Sabathia knew it.

The Yankees can afford to overpay for production. Sabathia will be the ace of that staff for at least another 3 years. They’re willing to overpay to assure that.

While I never feel any sympathy for the Yankees

It is certainly the case that there are no deals for them, ever.

THIS. IS. NOT. THE. HENDRY. CUBS.

I can’t believe how many people here want to shell out monster contracts for players when the Cubs are just starting to get bad contracts off their books, and they’re not even close to being a championship team.

There will be monster contracts but they will be handed out...

…to the right players.

Is he going to drop 100 lbs?

No? Then who cares? He’s two years away from having a triple bypass.

Great pitcher

He is a coronary waiting to happen. Yanks Need him though, but Five years is a long time.

I don’t want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it.

In all seriousnes

he does need to shed pounds. He had to pushing 300+last year.

And look

you have to take care of your shell. That goes for everyone. It just isn’t good for any type of long term health or quality of life to be that big. I’m sure Patrice O’Neal (comedian) thought he was invincible despite his weight until he got hit with a stroke.

We'll see how CC holds up

There have been a few portly pitchers who enjoyed long and effective careers – Mickey Lolich, David Wells, even our own Rick Reuschel. The Yanks better get their money’s worth over the next five years.

You wonder why this took opting out

One year and another $30M? It’s all relative, but greed takes many forms apparently, fat ones included.

It didn't take opting out

It took suggesting he might opt out.

Good for Sabathia to get an extra year of guaranteed money while he could while not having to go through the dog and pony show to do it.
