MLB Division Series, Day 6: Phillies/Cardinals, Brewers/Diamondbacks
The two National League division series can end tonight, if the Phillies' Roy Oswalt can hold down the Cardinals and the Brewers win in Phoenix. If so, it could also be Albert Pujols' last game in a Cardinals uniform. We'll see. If St. Louis wins, they'll play Game 5 in Philadelphia on Friday.
As for the D'backs, they crushed the Brewers 8-1 on Tuesday thanks in part to a gigantic grand slam hit by Paul Goldschmidt, which resulted in this:

Move over, Ted Lilly. You've got company.
Also, the D'backs are asking their fans to wear black and "blackout" Chase Field tonight. I'm not a huge fan of alternate jerseys -- Arizona is going to wear their black ones tonight -- but the "blackout" could look pretty cool.
Full info on tonight's games after the jump.
Both games today are on TBS.

Hey...just read where Francona is gonna fill in for McCarver for a couple games...
Tito auditioning?
"When I came up to bat with three men on and two outs in the ninth, I looked in the other team's dugout and they were already in street clothes." - Bob Uecker
Maybe, but check out
Francona on FOX gig: “I’ve only broadcast one other game in my life … and I sucked. This is going to be interesting.”

So has McCarver
and he’s done ‘more than one’.

So our choice is between...

I hate national broadcasters
They should mix and match commentators from the 2 teams contesting or just pick the more popular announcers for teams. Uecker & Scully would probably be the most wanted. Network broadcasters are usually dull and feel like they don’t really know the history of the team or the game past a few facts and past whatever cliff notes they were given for both teams.

Back in the 1960s
… they used to have the broadcasters from the teams split duty, or at least share the mic with a national broadcaster for part of the game.
They should start doing that again.

Ha ha -- I thought the EXACT SAME THING last night...
…when Goldschmidt hit that home run. I still like Ted’s glove flip better — it showed true passion and competitiveness; whereas Marcum’s was like, “Ah, f**k it.”
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
And just so we'll never forget...

The Marcum episode
was much different. There clearly was a major disagreement between Marcum and Lucroy over what to throw Goldschmidt with two strikes. First, Lucroy came out to the mound and they had an animated conversation. Then Lucroy put down two signs that Marcum shook off. Then he throws a pitch that Goldschmidt crushes to put the game out of reach.
Then, when Roenicke came out to the mound to take Marcum out, I thought Marcum and Lucroy were going to come to blows.
odd too - is that the ball BARELY got out

A Fan of Alternate Jerseys, If...
they are only worn on Sundays in road games. Alternate jerseys should never be worn at home.
Good things come to those who wait... and wait....and wait.
Hmmmm.
I don’t like the cardinals and I dispise Roy Oswalt. Can they both lose?

Interesting story line
Albert has hit more HR’s off Oswalt than anybody else.
Don’t think Roy doesn’t know that.
Also, Pujols is hitting .580 this series.
How long till pitchers and catchers report?
We need some real Cub news to talk about. Not rumors and DBacks games.
We'll get some soon enough.
A new GM hiring should make this site pretty busy.

Every day is one less day to get their act together.
I am pulling for Friedman, he has bested Epstein with a fraction of the resources and has built a team that can compete year after year. I would be happy with several of the choices though.

I’d be more concerned about this if today were November 5 instead of October 5.

I laughed when I saw that live
Definitely reminiscent of TRL’s reaction. I’m always amazed when pitchers can tell the difference right away between a long fly ball and a home run – by the time it goes over their head it’s traveled just 60 feet and isn’t all that high off the ground yet. But obviously both TRL and Marcum knew right away, and both ended up being right.
The Chris Young
HR off Lilly in 2007 was definitely a no doubter. I was at that game and everyone in the park knew it was gone, just by the sound it made coming off the bat. It landed a good 12-15 rows deep in the bleachers.
I was also at the game last night, and it was NOT a no-doubter, although you knew it was trouble because it was headed for the gap. It just barely cleared the fence in right.
Whats wrong with alternates?
The standard white and grey gets boring. It gives each team a little personality. I came to love them because whenever Zambrano went out to pitch, it was guaranteed he would pick the blue jersey.
i have always contended that the reason baseball was pretty much always white team versus gray team was because there was no color tv for a very long time and then there was no good consistant color television for some time.
such is not the case now.
not only do i think every team should have an alternate color top, i think the teams that have them should wear them more often. since everything pretty much revolves around television these days i think more color on tv makes games it more likely someone stops and watches the action when it happens. i like what houston did for a few years making the brick shirt the defacto road jersey and i wish more teams did it as well.
baseball is the only major sport where you don’t need teams in opposite colors to tell which team is on offense and which team is on defense, why it is also the only sport that insists on having its teams 95% of the time wear the blandest, non-team color uniforms is beyond me.
I still haven't decided who I'm cheering for this year.
But I do want Matt Kemp to win the MVP, and Clayton Kershaw to win the Cy. And Jose Bautista is a 2011 version of Brady Anderson. Give it to one of the Yankee or Red Sox outfielders, and the Cy in the AL goes to Verlander.
I wish we were a good baseball team.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
I am wondering
if there has ever been a team that had both the MVP and Cy Young Award winner and never even got a sniff of the postseason?
Bautista has done it for two years so
he would be double Anderson. Dodgers win MVP and Cy Young winning 82 games? Verlander is a no brainer, others take your pick.
Kemp was better than Braun according to WAR. Plus he’s less of a douche.
Kershaw was one and a half lower WAR than Halladay, but had a better record, higher K/9, etc. I think that one is the closest.
Ellysbury deserves it in the AL, too.

ALBERT PUJOLS YOU ARE THE BEST BASEBALL PLAYER I HAVE EVER SEEN

Utley at first, grounder to short. Furcal fields the chopper, fires to first. Utley pauses, turns the corner, and chugs for third. Pujols cuts the throw off about 10 feet before first, guns it to Freese, Freese head-tags a sliding Utley out at third.

Also, if you haven’t seen Conan O’Brien’s funniest skit ever, 1864 baseball, watch it now. You will laugh.

Rally Squirrel needs to go to the NLCS regardless of which team advances from the Phillies/Cards DS.

Top Secret Mission
He’s either:
1.) Trying to track down the real Mike Quade. You know, the stellar minor league manager that the Cubs thought would be a great manager, except they got this smiling joker instead.
2.) Trying to find a more competitive team than the 2012 Cubs to play for. He’s tracking down a promising single-A team.
3.) He’s simply hungry and wants to caucus with some couscous.
