OT: Orioles and Padres get uniform updates
I'm not sure I like the Orioles "new" logo. A little too cartoonish if you ask me, but better than what they had. I do like the "new" orange jerseys.
In addition the Padres uniforms continue to suck. Yawn is right...

Thmbs up for the Orioles
meh for the Pads. I really never liked the brown and mustard, either. The problem I see with the SD home jersey is that they are using a style that evokes (to me) an oceanic, sea-type flourish, which I can see due to the fact that SD is a city on the ocean, but the team is the Padres, a Spanish Mission connotation. I don’t think they mix well.
Personally, I would go to a brownish palette of colors, but use a better font than the one they used on the old brown and mustard, a font a bit more stylish and classic.
"IN THEO WE TRUST"
I can't stand that dumb cartoon Oriole.
Thumbs down on that.
And further thumbs down on the orange jerseys. That makes three teams (Giants, Orioles, Marlins) with them. What’s next, an orange Cubs alt?

No
Orange is not a team color of the Cubs.

It's barely a team color of the Marlins!

Somebody hates cartoon birds
Keep Al away from Tweety. Then again, he did always seem like a Sylvester kind of guy.
And Orioles own orange as much as the Giants do. The Marlins are the ones doing the color schemes.

If it were the folks from Silk Stalkings
there would be way more purple.
10-25-2011. Theo Epstein joins the Cubs. Now, the fun begins.
First of all...
…the Marlins don’t count. Second just because they share colors with another team shouldn’t preclude them for creating a jersey.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
the Giants
share the colors because they were once the Orioles before they moved to NY and became the Giants. As far as the Marlins go, well thats for another thread. I like the alternate jerseys personally, but someday we might look back on them and say, “I cant believe I liked that”. When the powder blues were popular, at the time it was ok, now i say WTF were they thinking.

Wrong team
Yankees were the Orioles, Giants were always the Giants, though they got pieces from a team called the Troy Haymakers (similar in some ways to the Expos → Nats only with more shattering).
I think the new Marlins motif (jerseys, sculpture, etc) are going for channeling the experience of a seafood meal gone bad, like where your stomach churns and heaves and you start seeing things, lights suddenly brighten, things start to spin.

Ah, yes
I knew the Yanks were once the O’s, but it appears there was a manager that went from the O’s to the Giants and took those colors, and several players, with him to the Giants. I need to brush up on my history. Thx.

Sounds like
you might be remembering the original Baltimore Orioles, the strong 1890s team that used the famed Baltimore Chop. They were 1 of 4 teams folded in 1899 and they were stronger than some other NL teams. The issue was double-ownership. The Cardinals sucked til the Cleveland Spiders owner bought them and then gutted his team to send the best players down to St. Louie. That’s what first built up the Cards. If I remember correctly, the Orioles & Giants had the same owner and he raided the team.

So 10% of the teams have an orange jersey
I appreciate that some people do not like orange jerseys, but 10% is not excessive. Even if you count the Mets, the percentage is only 13.33%.

I hear orange
is the new blue.
No Cubbiegoon, I am Deep Goat
I like the cartoon Oriole, but not so crazy about the orange jersey.
I prefer the uniforms to be simple: white for home, gray or grey for road. Simple. No alternate jerseys. And how many different jerseys do the Mets have? Seriously?
by jeffmills1972 on Nov 16, 2011 2:24 AM CST up reply actions
Alternate jerseys look good
The Cubs and White Sox look very sharp in theirs. It is an issue when a team has multiple alternate jerseys in the same season. And too many teams used black that don’t really have claim to it (Blue Jays, Mets).

Don't like the orange
Even when the O’s were good, didn’t like the team, loved the bird. The Pads road unis finally get it right. This is a PCL throwback.
The team’s research found a very loud minority wanted a return to brown. The majority wanted their current unis tweaked to be less generic. They came up a winner with the road jersey, the secondary jersey but minimal change on the main jersey, save for some piping.
But the old Swinging Friar from the 60s in back, but in blue.
By the way, wouldn’t you consider my avatar logo a "cartoon’?

Not everything old is classic
Generally yeah, but some things are more classic (‘50s cars) than others (’70s cars)
Some things ya’d want to forget:
Cubs

Red Sox (fits that Leno’s from Massachusetts)

Braves

Pirates

Indians

Orioles (no wonder they relocated…)

and… (drumroll)
Phillies, yes, Phillies

(use rear entrance? Ugh)

Yea, kinda
Nothing wrong with it though. There are baseball teams named after colored socks, so there is no reason teams have to try to make their logos look mean and scary.

worn in a game against the Cubs, and it looked great. Best uni that team has even worn.

I Love Love Love that cartoon Oriole.
The more realistic oriole looked really stupid imo. It just didn’t seem to look right on their hats. The New Old Oriole looks much better.
See the Cubs 2012 schedule at http://cubsbythenumbers.com/sched2012.html
Also see what old Cubs Scorecards looked like at http://cubsbythenumbers.com/scorecards.html
I can't agree more.
Between the Jays going back to their awesome old unis, the cartoon oriole, and the Royals in powder blue, it seems like MLB is finally coming out of their “everyone must wear black b/c it looks tougher and sells more” period.

Yes, but the Royals powder blue uniform is their home uniform.
It should be their road uniform.

Yes, it shouldn't be a home alternate, it should be the standard road uniform.
Baby steps, though, I guess.

I'm guessing he meant these:
One of the many unacceptable uses of powder blue roadies:

This probably seems hypocritical of me, given my affection for certain 1970’s-1980’s uniform elements, but I don’t think that the Phils should ever go back to that 1970-1992 stylized P.
I don’t want a return to polyester pullover jerseys and thick poly sashes instead of belts. Those were weird looking, and the early 1990’s decision to go back to real belts and button downs was a good one.
I just think that a few teams went too far in ditching everything 70’s and 80’s. KC and Baltimore and Toronto first and foremost.
(Some teams did well in ditching the 1980’s stuff – Houston most obviously.)

Choice B is better than Choice A
Phillies current uniform is good, but that purple & powder blue uniform isn’t the abomination it’s made out to be.

Almost everything is better than Choice A
Was it Steve Carlton who said those uniforms “made me look like a blood clot”?
Is Toronto going back to the “numbers made of stripes” motif? They should.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Toronto is going back to an updated '93 set
So yes striped font is back, though font is a little different.
Have you seen the new Marlins uniforms?
by ddoubleheader on Nov 16, 2011 9:40 PM CST up reply actions
They're weird. I don't know.
They aren’t the worst things I’ve ever seen, but I don’t know if I like the “red-blue-yellow ONLY in the drop-shadow” business. It’s as if the uniform is simultaneously too busy and too boring.
They’ve got basic, boring black jersey/white pants at home, and then gray/gray on the road. Dull. And both kits have the word “Miami” written in white in a blocky sans serif font. Fine.
But then three colors of wacky shading! (The more I look at it, the yellow is the problem. Drop that and the entire thing almost works.)
I also dislike that abstract marlin appearing above every M, especially on the hat. It looks minor league. Or as if the M is wearing a jaunty feather.
I think they should have kept the teal from the old unis, and made that the color border all the way around the logo and the team name. And then wear the red jerseys at home, with the black hats and undershirts.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
The return of the Oriole makes me inordinately happy.
So happy that my son will get to grow up in a world where the O’s wear the smiling bird on their hats. The realistic Oriole was such a buzzkill.
I have no idea what the padres are doing.
Did they take their team color, and then turn the contrast up to 100 so that it became totally indistinguishable from black? Is that supposed to be blue? Is blue supposed to be a Pads color?
What is the point of every pro sports team wearing exactly the same uni – team name in (essentially) black in script on a white jersey for home – city name in boring serif font in (essentially) black on a gray jersey for road.
Pads should put the friar on their sleeves, and incorporate a brown and yellow scheme. It can be done well, they just really haven’t done it yet.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
I like the old Oriole.
But I am not totally against the cartoon Oriole. I just wish they would win more. Camden is fun when they are winning, great energy.

Love the old look Oriole
I certainly hope the don’t embarrass the likes of Palmer, McNally, Powell & Robinson wearing them. I loved those teams coached by the Earl of Baltimore. The Padre’s still have it wrong. The swinging Friar needs to be an important part of the uniform.

Uniform Changes
- The Padres: I’m a fan of these, for the most part. I did not like the Pad’s old road uniforms that were sand colored. While the new road jerseys are simple, I like it. Its a classic font and on all of the jerseys I really like the use of the piping trim. The alternative jersey looks great, too, and, again, its simple. They’re not bringing in a bunch of colors, its just a solid looking jersey. I don’t love the home script jersey, however it makes sense, particularly being a west coast team… certainly gives a pacific feel.
- The Orioles: I like these as well. The cartoon Oriole is great. I also do like the orange jersey. The color combinations of all the jerseys gets solid marks, IMO. My only criticism is the script font, particularly on the away jersey. The gap between the “L” and the “T” looks odd to me.
- The Marlins: I’m surprised that there hasn’t been more comment about their recently unveiled unis. I don’t dislike them nearly as much as I thought I would. I’m not a huge fan, in part, because I think they could be really good. To me, their biggest error was not settling on one key color. I get that they’re going for the south Florida art deco/pastel look, but I think thats the downfall. Had they settled, either on orange or the teal, I think they’d have a great uniform. Someone at the Marlins SB Nation blog did a mock-up of the new logo, but dumped most of the colors and just had teal and black and it looks great. They’re not asking my opinion, but if they were, I’d tell them to dump the colors and settle for either orange or blue.
Not bad
I said in another post that the marlins Unis and logo were not terrible, but the rainbow colors kill it. That pic proves it. Problem is that would look terrible on an orange jersey. But they could use the teal jersey again. Those new colors wont last mare than a year or two.

I don't mind the logo itself.
In fact I kinda like it. But the colors are baaaaaaad.

I figured the Padres would go back to the 1970s look with the brown colors.
I’m talking pre-Kroc era. Someone once said that the Padres unis of the early ’80s looked like a taco. LOL
Unacceptable language.
Don’t do this again.

OK-he’s gone. Now I can say that I hate that cartoon oriole and the Padre’s should have at least some brown in theirs.
