He was number four on my list of candidates

seemed like a total bump on the log in that post interview media session. I wanna know why the Brewers, who knew him better than anybody, never hired him in 2008 and 2010? Not sure on this one at all.

by MikeJW on Nov 16, 2011 10:21 PM CST reply actions

Interim Manager

Sveum was named the Brewers’ interim manager after Ned Yost was fired in 2008 and helped a skidding team turn it around and win the wild card.

Basically, GM Doug Melvin screwed up. He said he wanted someone with previous managerial experience and went for Ken Macha, ridiculed on Brewers’ BBs for struggling to stay awake during games. Sveum should have had the interim tag removed, although with the subpar pitching staff in 2009 and 2010, Billy Martin couldn’t have produced a winner. Melvin learned from his mistake by hiring Ron Roenicke to succeed Macha. I think Melvin wanted to go outside the organization for his next hire. Obviously he made a good choice.

And they’re not going to hire DeMarlo Hale because he’s too close to Francona and they feel they need a clubhouse change.

So it’s Alomar, Lamont and Lovullo in Boston, but it sounds like they’re going to open up for new interviews.

by Josh Timmers on Nov 17, 2011 12:39 AM CST up reply actions

Yep it's him.

He’s definitely not the candidate that everyone wanted, and he does not have the appeal that Maddux, Francona, or Sandberg have. Nevertheless, the man has been around baseball his entire life, and he performed very well throughout the interview process. I hope we have found a manager similar to the nobody that Epstein hired in 2004.

Eight years and $200M? You must be joking..

Fielder is morbidly obese at age 27. Halfway through his contract his skyrocketing weight and declining speed/athleticism will cripple whomever is moronic enough to sign him. The Brewers are bailing-out for a reason, they’ve got common sense.

No doubt Jim Hendry would be schmoozing Fielder’s agent right now. Once again I drop to my knees and thank God we hired Theo..

I missed the joke. Glad Alomar will not be the next Cubs Manager!!

There is a big difference in using a stun gun versus using a taser.

Stun Gun: Stun guns are an effective contact weapon but you must physically touch the person with the prongs of the stun gun. It is also best to hold it on them for many seconds. Stun guns work by rapidly overworking the muscle group and depleting it of blood sugar. In addition to shocking and immobilizing pain and extreme exertions of muscle contraction, the result is similar to muscle failure.

Taser: A Taser device such as the new Taser C2, allows you to repel the attacker from up to 15 feet away (7-10 feet being optimum target spread.)

BIG difference from a stun gun which requires direct contact.

Police carry their own version of a Taser device which you hear about if read the news. The police version is similar to the C2’s predecessor, Advanced Taser. However, the law enforcement version does have a longer range (21 feet compared to the civilian 15 feet).

So now you know one of the main differences between a “taser” and a “stun gun.” Effective range. And you also know that a stun gun is not the same as a Taser.

Some similarities between Sveum and Maddon

Maddon served as interim manager of the Anaheim Angels in both 1996 and 1999, and was a long-time bench coach for the team, before interviewing for the Red Sox job in 2004, and eventually getting the Tampa job a year later in 2005. He got a ring with the Angels in 2002.

Sveum got a ring on the 2004 Red Sox staff, and served as interim manager of the Brewers before getting this opportunity.

So… all of the Cubs optomists can say, we’ve got the next Maddon:)

Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in.

That bridge is actually completed now.

And, they wouldn’t be falsifying their address if they used 1060 W. Addison

It's probably just for the morning news shows

you know, the low-person-on-the-totem-pole that gets to do all those live remote quick snippets, stands out there in the McDonalds parking lot with the marquee in the background, will open with some sort of “Sorry Ryno” quip, quote some source saying Sveum is the choice, then ask passersby how do you pronounce the new Cubs manager name?

(I’d say “Dale”).

He's a rescue ranger.

Isn’t he?

I hope he takes it.

He was tied with Maddux for me as first choice. I couldn’t decide between them because I really wanted to see a video of him talking to the Chicago press before making up my mind. Alomar was my third. I liked the catcher part, but not how he didn’t seem to think much of stats.

If this helps...

bring Prince to Chicago, then I’m all on board. Otherwise, my feelings are kinda “meh”. I was hoping for Maddux, but I’m glad we didn’t hire Alomar. The last thing we need is a hipster running the show.

On a side note re: Maddux’s family concerns… his kids are COLLEGE age! Cut the cord, Mike.

Not my first choice for manager...

But if the brain trust and Cherington were both high on him, perhaps there’s something to that…

Sveum is a local (Bay Area) guy

hope he knocks our socks off.

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.

Is he from there originally?

Current reports indicate he lives in the Phoenix area.

Hails from Pinole Valley

middle class suburb in the East Bay, north of Oakland. He was a two-sport star in high school, football and baseball. Could have played either sport (both) if he had gone to college.
