2012 Cubs Spring Training Schedule
With the weather getting colder, it's time to think about spring! The Cubs announced their spring training schedule on Monday.
Included in the schedule, which comprises 35 games (including five split-squad dates), is the annual split-squad trip to Las Vegas, this time for a pair of games against the defending AL champion Texas Rangers. There's also one night game. There will be 16 home games at HoHoKam Park in Mesa.
Unlike some past years, the Cubs won't play any exhibition games in major league parks before Opening Day, which is April 5 in Chicago against the Nationals. Instead, they'll finish up in Mesa two days before that.
Tickets for the games at HoHoKam Park will go on sale Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 at 10 a.m. CST on cubs.com or by calling 1-800-905-3315. The ticket box office at HoHoKam Park will open for the sale of individual game tickets beginning Jan. 17, 2012 at 9 a.m. MST.
Complete schedule after the jump. All games through Saturday, March 10 are at 2:05 CST; after that Daylight Saving time begins and all games are at 3:05 CDT (unless otherwise noted). I'll post radio & TV information when that becomes available. (ss) denotes an opponent's split squad.

Big League Park Exhibitions
This has been one negative of the season starting on Thurs/Fri. It makes much less sense to have the exhibition games in big league parks. Those games use to be Friday and Saturday, followed by a Sunday off day for the teams. Having a mid-week set of exhibition games makes much less sense.
So wait.
You say it doesn’t make sense to have exhibition games in big league parks, which I agree with — particularly since they charge regular season prices.
But then you say this is a “negative” from the regular season starting Thurs/Fri.
I’d say it’s just as well that the Cubs aren’t doing it. Some teams still are — look at the last game on this schedule. The other half of the Brewers split squad is playing the Diamondbacks at Chase Field that day. I’m guessing the tickets in Mesa will be less expensive.

No...
… I am saying that it made sense to do the exhibitions with the old starting days, because they fell on a Friday and Saturday. But with the new start, these exhibition games would fall on Tues/Weds. The exhibition games falling on a weekend made it more possible that fans could come out to the ballpark or meant more likely viewers.
I liked the exhibition games, particularly when it meant the Cubs playing an AL team and playing in a ballpark that they may only play in once every 5-10 years.
I see.
With interleague play, that doesn’t matter so much any more. The real issue was the regular season prices being charged.

Well...
… its not like spring training is all that cheap anymore… at least when it comes to the Cubs.
Well
… actually, several teams (notably, Dodgers and White Sox) have prices much higher than the Cubs for spring games.
And spring games at the training camp sites are still far less expensive than exhibitions at major league parks at regular season prices. Top price for a Cubs spring game, I believe, is still less than $30.

The week I'm there, Rangers back to back?
Don’t remember that happening before, even though one is a split squad. Off day right in the middle of my week with the cubs, guess I’ll go to Talking Stick for a game.

Can't wait
Will love to see the Cubs back in Vegas again this year. Against the Rangers is a bonus. Looking forward to seeing how the squad splits for these two games. Only problem is the prices for these games—especially for split squad—but I’ll make the sacrifice to see the Cubs when they are in town.

We are going to Randy Hundley's fantasy camp in January instead.
I surprised my husband by signing him up and he surprised me back by getting me a plane ticket to come out and see him there the last couple of days. I’m so excited. I just had a Cubs t-shirt custom made with his name and his number on the back so I can root for him properly when I go.

As I suspected, I'm in Scottsdale during the Vegas weekend
Figures. I suspect that the younger starters will go to Vegas and the older ones will stay behind in Mesa. Looks like I’m going to try to get to the following games:
16th: SF at Cubs, COL at CIN night (Goodyear)
17th: LAD-ss at COL (Talking Stick), SF at LAD-ss night (Glendale)
18th: White Sox at Cubs ss
19th: the first 2 hours of Cubs at SEA (Peoria)
I’d rather go to Talking Stick than watch Soriano, Byrd, and Soto play 4 innings vs. an Oakland split squad at Phoenix Municipal. I figure that Giants at HHK is my only chance to see most of the starters, as whoever went to Vegas will probably get the Monday game at Peoria off.

If I were you
… I’d wait to buy tickets until I see what players are going to be moved in the offseason.
Under the old regime, yes, veterans might have been given the “right” to stay behind rather than go to Vegas. That may not be the case under Theo & Co.

I have award tickets and hotel so it's pretty flexible
Thanks to Southwest, I can fiddle with the tickets as much as I’d like – it’s unfortunately work that is in the way the following two weekends. If I can get the weekend of the 30th free in time, I’d rather go then.
But I’m just as happy seeing other teams play – last time I went about six years ago, I went to a Cubs game at HHK, a White Sox game at Tucson, a Padres-Rangers Sunday night tilt that drew about 2800, and a Giants game on getaway day to see Bonds hit twice.

Spring Training sounds nice and warm
But I need to focus on the predicted 52" inches of snow first.
