Cubs offer arb to Pena, Aramis, not to Wood
Probably b/c we are okay with Pena accepting, we know that Ramirez won't, and know that it doesn't matter either way with Wood.

Question re: Wood
Does this mean he’s retiring? Or did the CBA change the “cubs can’t offer until May 15” rule?

Don't think the Cubs get a pick if he signs elsewhere, so no point in offering arb
Pena and Ramirez should get picks for the Cubs if they don’t accept.
I know. I didn't know that was possible right away.

Uh oh !
They need to offer Wood arbitration, too. Please! Pretty please?

You're becoming very SenorGato esque whenever Wood is mentioned

Crap...I forgot I had to run my posts by you first...for your stamp of approval, but...
…as long as it got a response from you, it served its purpose.

Sweet! You go another one! You're trolling is improving!
And that’s certainly something to be proud of.

Should pretty much close the door on Pena, too, I'd think.

Good point
Does that mean the possibility of Fielder signing with the Cubs goes up?
The likelihood of
‘Fielder to the Cubs’ shot up when it became apparent that Theo et al won’t be able to spend 15 mil a year on bonuses.
I’m sticking to the 150 mil a year premise. I was guessing 130 on roster, 20 mil on bonuses. Since bonuses drop to 10 mil max, roster will be about 140. Like him or not, Price Fielder adds mash to the team over 6 or so years. At least 4 of those, we should be competitive in the NL.

intersting
It also seems like Sizemore is off the table.
Should be enough to get Fielder and 2 Mid level free agents.
Yes, but they could still attempt to offer him a multi-year deal.
Offering him arb doesn’t mean he’s out of the picture now.
Serious-ish question...
Is there any market for Pena if he’s demanding a multi-year deal? If there is, isn’t it likely a 2/14 kind of scenario where he’s really better off taking the Cubs arb offer and (in all likelihood) getting a raise from his $10M yearly salary?

He'd still be eligible to be traded..
if he accepted and signed Fielder later, right?

Maybe Wood would be taking a significant pay increase with arbitration
and maybe he didn’t want to take that much money from the Cubs
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
Arbitration
Just because the Cubs offer it, doesn’t mean he has to accept it. It also doesn’t mean he can’t sign between now and a possible arbitration hearing. The process has changed, too, where a few years ago, no arbitration offer meant that the team could no longer negotiate with that player until May 1st. That no longer is the case.
Right, but
… given the relationship between Wood and the team, it seems clear to me that he’s probably already agreed in principle to a deal, and doesn’t need this process.

I think the original analysis is correct
Ramirez is gone and we want the comp pick. We’re not sure about bringing Pena back, but we’d be OK with it on a one-year arb contract. And Kerry Wood will sign a one year extension in the next few days so that’s all moot.
pena
is a class player like d.lee but i really dont want to watch him strike out all season again.
This all makes sense.
I guess we all agree that Woody will be back. Curious if the Cubs will now make a play for Fielder. Ready for some movement for the Cub roster.
The money will be spent.
Better on Prince than something we don’t need.

i think
prince is kind of risky at 8 yrs.5 yrs would be good.these guys want security so they can still make millions even if their careers tank.that’s not the way it should be.
i could see 5-6 guaranteed
and then some options, maybe
5 years Guaranteed,
Year
6 Player Option
7 Mutual Option
8 Club Option
Chronologically inept since 2060

How should it be?
Granted that “security” is a relative concept when you’ve already earned $35 million, but what kind of deal do you think someone in his position ought to sign?
