Mackanin first to interview for Cubs manager position
I don't know a lot about him, other than the Red Sox have already interviewed him. Thoughts?

It's amazing to me that our new management team can make decisions at warp speed
and have an interview set up in less than 24 hours after the firing. Decisive? Ya think?
We'll miss you Big Boy. #10 for Hall of Fame.
I'm guessing some of this was in the works for a couple weeks.
Just kept quiet.

Of course it was...
… and even if it wasn’t, its not like Epstein and Co didn’t have the makings of a list in their head.
Yup
Just because we don’t hear it doesn’t mean it’s not being discussed.
My guess is Theo already has a good feel for who he’s going to hire. Even to the point this may be a formality (probably not though).
But it’s good to hear the process moving quickly. GM meetings are very soon and the Cubs need to have their manager in place well before the winter meetings, if not at least before the arb deadline later this month.
Just win the next game...!
I would be surprised if it took more than another week or so.
I’m guessing Theo and Jed have been discussing this for a while already.

Surprised??
It’s now nearly 2 weeks after we posted these comments….wow !
Just win the next game...!
I'd rather have Maddux or Francona
… plus if Maddux got the job his brother would prolly stick around
The list of interviewees that is
670-The Score updates suggest that he’s not on the list of guys to be interviewed but on the list for consideration.
Just win the next game...!
Which is weird to me...
Interviewing is a two way street. You’d think (you’d hope) that Tito would want to explore more about the possibilities here.
I think it's weird that a guy goes around using his father's nickname.

i stand corrected. just read on espn chicago
theo has met with tito about his interest in the position, and plans on meeting again to see if he would fit with the organization. interesting
Oh gawd
I do not want to spend all season listening to Bob Brenly talk about how he was the vice-president of the Tito Francona Fan Club.
ESPNChicago reporting
Theo and Francona have been talking whether Chicago is a fit for him

He's got a name that Chicagoans can pronounce
Peter Mackanin, Jr. (pronounced “ma KAN in”) (born August 1, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois)
Always a good start.
"Just shut up and play" - Matt Garza
He was the interim manager
for the Pirates in 2005 and the Reds in 2007. Actually did a pretty good job with the Reds, leading them to a winning record of 41-39 after taking over for Jerry Narron.
Is supposed to be a very “sabermetric” manager.
As a player, he was a utility infielder in the 70s and early 80s, mostly with Montreal and Minnesota.

He also managed the Iowa Cubs in 1988
Don’t know if that’s a positive or not.
Yeah, I know there should be an apostrophe in "Vails," but punctuation wasn't an option when I signed up.

1989 too
Anyone who managed the immortal Paul Noce is good with me.
Actually, at both Peoria and Iowa he managed Joe Girardi and Makr Grace. He was Greg Maddux and Rafael Palmeiro’s manager in Peoria and Dwight Smith’s in Iowa.
Looking at those rosters are just a trip down memory lane.
The only downside is that he's 60.
It would seem to me that Theo & Jed are looking for someone younger.

Mike Maddux is a spring chicken
only 50

I like the Mike Maddux idea.
I’m sure his pitching savvy would be an improvement in bullpen management.
Can anyone attest to his resume regarding fundamentals, fielding, lin-ups, etc…?
I think it is safe to assume
that fundamentals run in the Maddux family (starting with Dad Mike) Seriously I don’t think he is very similar to his brother on those things.

I recognize the difference between Mike and Greg
on the field of play. But Mike coaches while Greg flirts around all Jedi-like.
Mike has a pitching staff with back-to-back WS showings. Yes, I know they lost both, but I can still see value in his approach. I liked his style this past WS.
I’ll ask again, anyone want to weigh in on his skills with the other facets of the game?
Actually that was a BAD typo on my part
I meant they ARE very similar on fundamentals. I can’t imagine a Maddux that did not believe in them. I have no doubt Mike would stress things like defense, knowing how to bunt etc.

60 is not quite ready to die....
Casey Stengel was 59 when he started managing the Yankees. That worked out OK.
True enough, but at 59 Stengel already had been managing in MLB...
…or the high minors for more than 20 years, including nine years in the National League.

Well, I like his name.
It reminds me of 1970s TV detective.
Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.
Are you talking about Mackanin and Cannon?
Or Maddux and Mannix?

Former manager of the Peoria Chiefs
Mackanin was pretty highly regarded here. Don’t really know what he’s been doing recently, other than his Phillies gig.

I thought you were against former managers of the Peoria Chiefs as Cubs Manager?
