Should the Cubs make a play to trade for Jurrjens? Is he too big of an injury risk? If they do trade for Jurrjens, who do the Cubs give up in return?

I believe the Cubs should try to trade for him. We definitely need the pitching, but I'm not sure what pieces would be required to get him.

I would do it in a heartbeat

for 2-3 mid to low level prospects sure, dude is a beast when healthy

That wouldn't get a deal done.

It would probably start around Jackson and at least one of Szczur/McNutt/Cashner

I like Prado, too.

He reminds me of a younger version of DeRosa. The dude can play a lot of different positions and can hit about 15-20 homeruns a year. He might hit 25 playing at Wrigley Field 81 games a year.

by jeffmills1972 on Nov 3, 2011 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, rather have Prado

Sign Prado to replace Baker who gets shipped to Boston as comp for Theo. Prado and Baker are similar players. Prado is younger and unlike Baker he hits RHP. Martin regressed a bit in ‘11 but all things considered he’s an upgrade over Bake.

Sure.

How could the Cubs pass up the chance to pick up another oft-injured pitcher?

Maybe we could make a play for Rich Harden again too if we have the chance.

by bluekoolaide on Nov 3, 2011 8:02 PM CDT reply actions

This is a decent example of trading a player at or near peak value

I know Jurrjens has spent some time on the DL, but when he’s on the mound, he has been really excellent.

Under normal circumstances, I would say definitely trade for him!!!! But Atlanta usually has a good idea of when to let players walk.

As for Prado, I think he’s a solid guy who can play all over the diamond, but I don’t really know where he would fit in the lineup. Third base batting 2nd? But yeah, I’m not 100% on him, so I would say only if the price is right.

The Cubs should NEVER make trades with the Braves

I don't think the Cubs have any dealings with Atlanta since Frank Wren was made their GM

I would trust our new guys.

Forgot about that, but at least we didn't get "snookered" on that one.

by troutfishin on Nov 3, 2011 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes we did

The key to the trade, Robinson Lopez, has been pretty bad since we acquired him. Harris has been okay, and Lorick was decent at Daytona at age 23.

by Mulhollandmania on Nov 4, 2011 11:01 AM CDT up reply actions

On a side bar to that

Hopefully Harris is recovering well from being hit by a car.

by Mulhollandmania on Nov 4, 2011 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Buehrle is a different kind of cat

He will sign with two team, one being the White Sox, the other being the Cardinals. He’s not the kind of guy that quibbles of contracts and money, so he’s not going to go to the highest bidder.

Then he's staying with the White Sox

because the Cardinals have no need of another starting pitcher.

by Josh Timmers on Nov 3, 2011 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Buehrle

This was thought to be the case initially, that he’d either go to the Cards or stay with the Sox, but Buehrle has come out and said that he’d sign with any team.

by dmlichte on Nov 3, 2011 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't be so sure about that.

According to his agent, Jeff Berry:

"Mark is not going to eliminate any team from free-agent consideration," Berry said. "But having pitched 12 years in the American League, the National League certainly will have some appeal to him.

I'd still be shocked if he signed with the Cubs.

Given the new management here...

… I wouldn’t.

I guess if Theo & Jed made him the best offer on the market...

…maybe it could happen. But Buehrle would have to answer to all (well, most) of those Sox fans who have been rooting for him for all of these years. I don’t think he wants to do that.

Why should he have to answer to anyone?

He’s a big boy and a free agent. He can make his own decision.

Of course.

But I would guess he might want to make every effort to avoid the awkwardness that would go along with changing “sides,” as it were. Plus, I’ve heard that Buehrle has stated publicly that he’d never pitch for the Cubs, so he’d have to deal with that. I just see this as a situation akin to Kerry Wood saying he wouldn’t sign with the Sox.

Maybe he never wanted to work for Jim Hendry.

The situation could be different now.

I'd rather have Prado

Jurrjens doesn’t do it for me. Seems like a lot of his success stems from cunning and guile and those don’t typically end well. Add in the fact that his FB now averages below 90 and the fact that his ERA is largely based off of a low HR/FB rate (a rate that would probably increase in Wrigley) and I wouldn’t touch him right now. Let somebody else take the risk.

On the other hand, I’ll take the risk that Prado can sustain a BABIP higher than .266. And he is a more than serviceable glove at 3B.

Rec'd

Pass on the oft injured soft tosser. As mentioned above I’d sign the younger versatile Prado to replace Baker who can’t hit RHP.

all depends on what the price is.

i’d like to have them both. but at what cost?

by MDavis on Nov 4, 2011 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions

He's Got the Right Stuff

And if Jurrjens helps lead us to a World Series win, then we’ll be loving him forever.

by Jody Jody Davis on Nov 4, 2011 10:59 AM CDT reply actions

Right now, the notion of any major trade...

…seems to run counter to what Theo & Jed are trying to accomplish (or get under way). Jurrjens numbers look solid in 2008 and 2009, but really haven’t been all that impressive in the two years since. I would agree with those above saying Prado would be the more intriguing candidate. But we’d really need to get into specifics to say for sure.

Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.

by daver on Nov 4, 2011 11:34 AM CDT reply actions

agreed. a lot of questions need to be answered when it comes to both, especially prado.

what position does he play? what do we need to give up for him? is he a true upgrade? I don’t see Theoyer giving up major prospects, considering theyve preached building from the ground up. if it was for mid level prosp and giving the braves salary releif then ok.

by MDavis on Nov 4, 2011 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, I'd assume Prado would be ticketed for third base.

He certainly wouldn’t be an upgrade to Aramis’ power, but he’d likely be better defensively and could bounce back to be a solid OBP guy with some power. As far as what we’d need to give up, I’m really not sure. Probably too much, unless the Braves have really given up on him (which, in turn, would make me question the trade in the first place).

Baseball is pitching, offensive production, baserunning and defense.

by daver on Nov 4, 2011 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

UZR has him as above average at 3rd

Seems like a good option if his offense bounces back
