Some Mike Maddux News

Several tweets, one after another, came out Monday afternoon regarding the possibility of Mike Maddux becoming Cubs manager. To sum up, he's withdrawn from consideration in Boston, and it's summed up pretty well by Rangers beat writer T.R. Sullivan:

Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux confirmed Monday that he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Red Sox manager’s job.

He has not done the same with the Cubs. He is still scheduled to interview with them but said he wants to talk it over with his family on Monday night.

Which pretty much confirms what you see here:

"We're in a good situation," Maddux says of his Ranger job. "My family moved here, the kids will be in school for 3 more years here."
Nov 07 via webFavoriteRetweetReply

This is totally understandable. While I'd love to have Mike Maddux as Cubs manager, if it's not the right fit for his family, he should stay where he is. On the other hand, if his family is OK with it, I hope Theo and Jed will hire him.

As always, we await further developments.

You see this all the time in college head coaching searches

Most likely it means that Maddux was told, or had it strongly hinted to him that he wasn’t going to get the Redsox job. In order to save face he is basically floating out the insinuation that he wasn’t that interested in the job in the first place.

The fact that he hasn’t canceled his interview with the Cubs is …IMO…the telling thing here. If he was truly completely uninterested in managing, he would have removed himself from consideration altogether.

well, for one thing, it allows you to stay an attractive commodity in the future.

Maddux interviewing with the Cubs and the Redsox was front page news. If BOTH teams say thanks but no thanks, he could think that somehow tarnishes his “brand.”

There has been quite a bit of discussion as to how not knowing why Mackinon (sp? Phillies Bench Coach) has not been given a managing job despite his being around baseball for so long. Maddux might be afraid he’ll become someone like that eventually.

by Nunyabidness on Nov 7, 2011 3:54 PM CST up reply actions

Bud Black

withdrew his name from consideration from the Red Sox job when he was up for the job with Terry Francona. Had nothing to do with him not getting the job and everything to do with him not wanting to move. In fact, he turned down several managerial chances before he was offered one in San Diego that did not require him to move.

We won’t know what Maddux’s thinking is for a while. He may withdraw from the Cubs job in the next few days. Or he may not.

by Josh Timmers on Nov 7, 2011 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Given how the organization has conducted itself the last few months

could you blame Maddux for NOT wanting to be considered for the Red Sox position? He has a job he’s comfortable with now, and an interview with a Cubs organization that appears to have outclassed the Red Sox by a mile so far this offseason.

by Bradsbeard on Nov 7, 2011 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

And that could be another side to it. It's possible that Maddux was told "STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THAT MESS"

In regards to Boston. Not wanting to actively embarass that organization, he fell on the sword.

That’s certainly a possibility

by Nunyabidness on Nov 7, 2011 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

arent you excited that you could type " STAY THE HELL AWAY...."

and it not refer to the Chicago Cubs….

So i you can give you can take it.

If we don't get Maddux, it'll be tough to lose out on getting him...

but I totally understand if Mike wants to stay in Texas with his family.

Does anyone still think that the Cubs could pursue Francona?

No.
“Does anyone still think that the Cubs could pursue Francona?”

by Nunyabidness on Nov 7, 2011 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

Very likely

But, it really could be that after further thought, Boston just didn’t make sense for him. Maybe he knew that all along, but didn’t want to say no to Boston right out of the shoot.

I do think your reading of the situation is more likely though.

It maybe that a manager is going to work a lot longer hours than a pitching coach

or I expect he will. I know he has two daughters and I believe they are a bit younger than Greg’s kids. What would be interesting to know is if they live in Texas year round. Greg Maddux and his wife raised their kids in Vegas once they became of school age and they would come live with him during the summer. I suspect Mike does the same. He lives close to Greg and I know they golf regularly. It may be that changed in the last year.

One odd tidbit in favor of the Cubs besides the obvious. When Maddux was down to Cubs
and San Francisco in 04 , I heard afterwords that he leaned towards SF but that his wife Kathy preferred Chicago. In any event both Greg and Kathy Maddux have always said very nice things about Chicago.

Mike is sort of at a crossroads though. If he decides not to interview with the Cubs for family reasons it likely means he will be a pitching coach for the foreseeable future but it is possible that is what he wants.

I realize this leaves me open for a lot of silly stuff but I have great admiration for Greg Maddux on and off the field but would be terrified to ever meet him in person and will keep my “fantasies” to cute actors usually with British accents. I love to watch the guy pitch and hopefully some day coach or manage. I don’t have to meet him to appreciate him as one the great players of his generation.

FYI I flew to San Francisco to see him win #300, I never followed him around. A 300th win is special ( though I did not have as much fun being there for Glavine’s which happened during one of my Cub home stands.

Again i get that I leave myself open for some ribbing, but my interest in Maddux is not personal as in wanting to hang out with him.

All I know about his “personal life” is in published articles and it is not that personal. Maddux has always been very clear do keep a wall between on and off field life and unless it impacts on his playing or working in baseball it is not something you are going to hear about beyond he really likes to golf.

I was just more impressed with the job Mackinin did with the Reds than what Sveum did with the Brewers. Of course, Sveum was only manager for 12 games and a playoff series, so it’s harder to get a read on him. But if Theo and Jed think that Sveum would do a better job, I’d trust them on that.

Is there any other position Sandberg could take before being named manager?

Just in general.

Even when Sandberg was in the running, I wasn’t sure if I wanted him as manager or not.

by Azul Cachorro on Nov 7, 2011 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

Even if Ryno is not a coach on the Cubs in 2012, the fans will say that it should have been Ryno if the Cubs have a bad start.

It’s silly to me to not consider hiring Ryno as a coach because “everytime the manager did anything at all wrong it would be how Ryno should be manager instead of coach.” Sandberg’s not going to get the manager’s job and most of us have accepted that. Most likely he won’t wind up as a coach on the Cubs next year, but if the opportunity came along, why wouldn’t they offer it to him? If he turns it down, so be it. I wouldn’t offer him a job as bench coach, but why not third base or first base coach?

by jeffmills1972 on Nov 7, 2011 6:07 PM CST up reply actions

I would imagine

the Cubs manager will talk to Ryno about a position. He will take the gig, I suppose, that looks best to him long-term. Phillies bench coach comes to mind.

by timh815 on Nov 7, 2011 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

If Mackanin leaves Philly, then Sandberg most likely will become their bench coach.

The question is, if the Phillies get off to a bad start next year, will there be cries of “Fire Charlie! Hire Ryno!” in Philly? Phillies fans hated Charlie Manuel when he was hired and the media would refer to him as “Uncle Charlie.” He’s got respect now, but fans and the media are fickle. All you got to do is look at what happened to Terry Francona. All he did was guide the Red Sox to two World Series championships and now he’s a pariah in Boston.

I guess I don't understand

why it’s so vital for some people that Ryno be in some sort of coaching position with the Cubs.

It’s untenable. Perhaps most people on BCB have come to terms with him not being manager, but I don’t think fans in general have. Every time something goes wrong, people would be yelling for Ryno to take over. Whoever is manager would have to be looking over his shoulder constantly. That’s no way to manage, and it’s uncomfortable for everybody.

You can make an argument that fans who so rabidly wanted Ryno to manage the Cubs have killed any chance he might have had for a Cubs job other than manager.

by Hammer on Nov 8, 2011 12:17 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with this

Including the last sentence. The media scrum around Ryno has, imho, raised expectations to an unrealistic and as NBF said, untenable, level. It would have been best to hire Ryno before Theo, had anyone wanted Ryno to manage here. This way, expectations begin low, the honeymoon phase passes and Ryno establishes himself in the Manager position – then Theo would have been able to come in and “grow” the organization with Ryno.

This all assumes many many things, including whether or not Theo and Ryno would be compatible.

My point is, the circumstances are too hot and nobody, himself included, wants Ryno to get burned.

by monkeybiz on Nov 8, 2011 1:08 PM CST up reply actions

You would not hire the manager before the GM.

Think of this, if they hire Ryno now and they do not see any success for a few years, how long until the faithful turn on him? By not hiring him now, you let him gain experience with someone else. If whoever you hire is successful, great! If they are not successful, you have your goat and can still hire Ryno when hopefully they would be turning the corner.

by jpeters407 on Nov 8, 2011 4:20 PM CST up reply actions

Again, though,

why is it so imperative the Cubs have to hire him? Can’t he just become whatever it is he wants to become and not have the Cubs involved with it at all?

by Not Bruce Froemming on Nov 8, 2011 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

That's what I thought

It’s been often said here by Al, you, and others that if Ryno were named bench coach, within a few games of a losing streak, people would be calling for him to take over as manager.

by Azul Cachorro on Nov 7, 2011 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

And the same thing will happen in 2012 if Ryno is not a coach on the Cubs...

It happened this year with Quade as manager and Ryno not even being a coach on the team. How many times did we hear “Hendry should have picked Sandberg”? Ryno’s in a “damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t” predicament. He doesn’t have enough managerial or coaching experience at the major league level yet he’s not being given an opportunity to gain that experience. I don’t understand why a guy who is a “coach” at the big league level is more qualified to be a manager than some guy who has actually managed for five years in the minor leagues and has been successful. No disrespect to Theo and Jed because I believe they have a plan in mind, but I wish they would explain this logic because it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

by jeffmills1972 on Nov 7, 2011 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

I'd bet it goes beyond simply not having enough experience.

There are a limited amount of people Theo and Jed want to interview. Perhaps they think Ryno is a decent candidate, but they know that there are four or five people they would prefer, so what’s the point in interviewing him (Knowing Theo interviewed him last year for the Pawtucket job, so he obviously knows a bit about his qualifications). It’s entirely possible that Theo and Jed aren’t enamored with Ryno as a manager for reasons other than his lack of experience. If one of those reasons (hypothetically) is, say, the way he deals with his pitching staff, then it does no one any good to say that to the media. What Theo and Jed did was give a reason why they wouldn’t be hiring Ryno while not criticizing his job performance. I thought it was well executed.

As far as not having major league coaching experience, well, the Cubs aren’t the only club who have coaching jobs available. Ryno should try and hook up with one of the other 29 teams.

Theo! Good job, Tommy Boy!

Maddux's quote to Gammons means nothing...

All it means is if he has a nice job in Texas to fall back on should he not have interest in the Cubs job. Assuming he’s offered the job, of course. I think the last thing Theo/Jed want is to offer someone the job only to have him turn it down. Having said that, they probably wouldn’t offer Maddux the job if he isn’t 1,000% on board, with family support, etc…

I’m sorry, but I think these interviews reveal a lot about a guy. You can read a guy’s intelligence and confidence from these quotes. You can tell if a guy is commanding a room. I don’t expect to be entertained, I expect to be impressed. I find insightful baseball intelligence to be interesting. Hearing pedestrian answers to questions says nothing to me, but “this is just another guy who thinks he can do it.”

Dusty and Quade spoke like these guys, they didn’t wow anybody, and they both proved to be poor tacticians. Lou… He was impressive, but the Cubs got him a couple years past his prime.

Well I am a little prejudiced.

Greg Maddux has perfected the art of answering the media in a string of standard cliches. He has no interest is being insightful in a media setting. However every once in a while when he likes the interviewer and thinks the topic ( various aspects of baseball) is worth it, he is fascinating, John Smoltz would laugh when describing Maddux’s deliberately boring answers. Personally I love listening to a very smart guy like Maddon having fun, but I have no problem with a “dull” manager as his job is to win games. Dealing with the media is part of the job, but it does not require them to be interesting.

The Cubs should grab up a pitching coach

Maddux definitely seems a good pick. A number of the names the Cubs have put up there so far seem good choices. But how many games are won or lost with just a few pitches? I think grabbing a great pitching coach is an awesome idea. A pitching coach could notice the minute signs that a pitcher needs pulled or can stay in a little longer that someone else might miss. And one thing has been consistent with all of the last who knows how many teams that have won the world series. They all had great pitching. The Cubs need some good pitching and a manager who can instruct them well.
