Confusing...
He goes from one bad team to another mediocre team. Don’t really understand hims motive for leaving Chicago to go to Milwaukee unless the Brewers gave him a big pay day.
Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!
More of a pay day than the Cubs wanted to offer.
Also, the Brewers aren’t mediocre. They won the division, have good pitching and have a good nucleus — even without Fielder and even with Braun’s possible suspension.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Well
… Brewers are the defending division champs, even with their current troubles.

And enough pitching
in an awfully “meh” division.
I would still say the Cards are favorites (still enough offense, pitching should improve with Wainright back), with the Brewers and Reds angling to be contenders. The other three teams, until proven otherwise, are inconsequential (from a competition stand-point).

Any guesses?
I’ll say 3 years, $40 million with a vesting option 4th year
my guess is 3/45 for rami

I bet 3/39.
There didn’t seem to be THAT much of a market for him.

Agree.
The Angels were interested, but that was before Pujols.
The Tigers had made some inquiries. That’s about all I heard.

BTW, I think we’re about to see a TON of signings and trades …

yeah rosenthal reporting
34-37 million
i think he may have over-estimated his market. The option with the Cubs was for $16 million, had he accepted it he’d just need a 2 yr 18-20 million dollar contract to equal it. Given the chance for collapse in his skill-set probably the right move to take the security, but i think he expected more

I'm beyond shocked. I'd have taken him back on a 3 year $34 million deal.
Oh well, live and learn.

Two and an option year.
But yeah, this isn’t that much $.

i'd do 2 and a club option
but 2 and a player option is worse than a 3 year deal

Agreed.
Because that’s essentially a 3-year deal.

his option was $16m, right?
so they are paying him less on average than his option was, but he got the years he wanted. I wonder had the Cubs offered 3/$30 area before he hit the open market if he would have accepted, with 2 guaranteed and 1 option

he wouldn't have accepted that
that’s far worse than what he’s getting with the brewers and i think his expectations heading into free agency were that he’d do better than this contract. I’d be hard-pressed to believe he’s surprised on the upside with a 3/34 or 3/37 deal

That depends on a lot of "Ifs"
If he stays healthy; if he hits and fields well; if there’s still a market for an even older 3B…
This way he guarantees himself double what he would have been guaranteed from the Cubs. It may be less on average, but he can package this with the money he already has in the bank and be quite happy I imagine.

I'm guessing he'll be hot out of the gate with the Brewers
Playing indoors with a warm 72 degrees will do his power numbers good. Not that I care, because now he’s the ENEMY!

Which to me raises more of a question about Prince
How will Prince do if he plays 81 games at an outdoor stadium, like Wrigley or Texas? Would the summer heat wear him down?

It's not.
It’s supposed to keep temps around 30 degrees above outside temp. So if it’s 30 degrees outside, it’s about 60 inside.
I can confirm this, as I was once there on a 35-degree day, and I had to keep a jacket on inside. Comfortable, no wind of course, but not warm.

You know ...
for all the angst about the 2008 team not showing up in the playoffs, I think the 2007 team might be more disappointing. Starting with this game and going through the rest of the season, that ’07 squad looked like one of those lightning-in-a-bottle teams.
Sigh.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
I'll differ with you here.
The ‘07 team got hot for a couple months, but barely squeaked into the playoffs. They could have beaten the D’backs — I think they were a better team — but would have likely been crushed by the Rockies, who were on an unbelievable roll, if they had gotten into the NLCS.

Wow, really shocked he signed for juts over 11 million per.
And only got 3 years.
I don't think he would have re-signed with the Cubs for that deal

History
History has shown a list of players that have gotten less in free agency per year for their last contract, than they would with their former team. Compare Mark Grace vs. Derek Jeter.
He could have accepted the Cubs option for $16M. That represents 43% of his new contract (at $37M). I can’t see how he would have signed a new contract with the Cubs where the option would have represented that much of the total value.

This will happen if the Brewers are in contention.
No one was really bitching about Aramis not hustling in 2008.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
The Aramis Market
It shrunk fairly abruptly. LA was off the table once they signed Albert. Florida wasn’t an option with Jose Reyes at SS and Hanley moving to 3B. Detroit seemed to have interest… but beyond that, there wasn’t a ton of chatter. Milwaukee allows him to play his early season home games indoors.
It will be interesting to see how Aramis does in Milwaukee. In all likelihood, Prince is gone (perhaps a certainty w/ Aramis’ signing and K-Rod accepting arbitration. If Braun indeed is suspended for 50 games, Aramis will be under the microscope very early and if he does not get off to a hot start, there may be some upset Brewers fans.
Prince is definitely gone from Milwaukee.
Tweet from Brewers beat writer Tom Haudricourt:
#Brewers GM Doug Melvin said last week there will be point where have to move on from Fielder. Signing Ramirez represents that point.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
Obviously
If Fielder was willing to come back to Milwaukee by giving a home town discount, the Brewers might have been able to squeeze his salary in. But now, he’s definitely gone. No way they can afford Aramis AND Prince.

Type B...
Pretty sure that means we get a supplemental first round pick. I can’t believe he wasn’t a Type A guy. Gotta think he would have been had it not been for guys like Pujols and Fielder in FA this year.
Stupid.
Best 3B in NL this year, but type B?
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
Yeh, I agree
Getting rid of the ELIAS system for Type A and B players is probably a good thing.
Well... Elias is going
But it should be noted that there will be fewer Type A free agents and its unlikely that Aramis would have been a type A under the new system.
It's based on two seasons

In related news, it's looking like McGehee might get non-tendered after all of this.
The Cubs should try to get him back.

Yep
Another guy with a bad 2011 that could be valuable if he rebounded to prior numbers. Part of a platoon with Stewart (even though his splits against LHP were lousy, that isn’t the norm for him)
Also
McGehee can play 2B if needed, and also be an emergency catcher.

Unless McGehee can play the outfield corners ...
or if Baker is sent to Boston as Theo compensation, I don’t see McGehee fitting.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Baker
I think he could be non-tendered if McGehee was acquired, though I admit the timing on this might be quite tricky
The problem with acquiring guys who had good seasons in 2010
is that next season is 2012.

Numbers from the past 2 years determine type A and B.
Ramirez had a lousy 2010.
He was the Cubs’ best clutch hitter since Sammy Sosa. Both of them were able to step it up a notch with runners in scoring position.
Thanks Aramis
For decades, people kept asking “When will the Cubs find someone to replace Ron Santo at third base?” Every year it seemed like third base was a black hole, sucking in another third baseman who would stay for a year or two and then putting in another one. And don’t think the media didn’t notice and kept harping on it.
Well, thank you, Aramis. You weren’t as good as Ron Santo, but you can battle it out with Stan Hack for the title of the second best third baseman in Chicago Cubs history. You played a lot of good baseball while you were in town and stabilized the position for nine seasons. Good luck in Milwaukee, except when you are playing the Cubs.

I'm not gonna miss him
he had one of the biggest joke years ever in 2011. He literally did not show up at all until July 1st. I remember Al saying in late June he thought Ramirez would just retire. That’s how indifferent he was last year, when he finally did get hot the Cubs continued to lose. He has zero leadership skills and brought no intangibles to the team.
More of this, huh?
The guy hit .295 in April and .283 in May. No, his power did not come until later, but even during the slow first couple of months his OPS was in the top 10 for all 3B in baseball.
I get not wanting to pay the guy 16 million to keep him around, or wanting to risk a 3 year deal on him moving forward, but to harp on his batting in 2011 is beyond old.
Not everyone in the clubhouse is or needs to be a leader, not everyone is built to become one – at least Ramirez didn’t pretend to be something he wasn’t.
