Ryan Theriot Non-Tendered
I guess he was only on the "right" side of the rivalry for a brief time but he will have a WS ring.

Only his parents would purchase that...
and only out of obligation.
So i you can give you can take it.
Who the hell
would purchase that even at the discounted price. That’s laughable tho I’m sure he has a fan or 2 around somewhere……..LOL
Is this for charity?
What a joke. I wouldn’t pay that much for Hawk’s signed jersey.
That seller is delusional
If jerseys were priced proportionately according to a player’s major league ability, at that rate an autographed Albert Pujols jersey would go for about $8 million bucks.
Yeah, I know there should be an apostrophe in "Vails," but punctuation wasn't an option when I signed up.

Well, Theriot is the only player from which you can buy a child-sized game-used jersey.
He has a market niche.

Really? you think he could be done?
you dont think someone would pick him up?
So i you can give you can take it.
i dont know any team that would "want" him...
or be excited to have him, but he’ll surely land somewhere else as a bench or fill in middle infielder, right?
So i you can give you can take it.
The Buchbinder Legionäre might...
They won the German championships in 2011, so he should feel right at home.

Someone will take him.
Probably not as a starter, but I’ll bet you a Big Gulp he’s on an MLB roster on Opening Day, unless he’s on the DL or a rehab assignment.

He made $3.3m in 2011.
Unless he’s willing to take a pretty big pay cut, I’d say no.

No.
We decided not to do it this year. Even I, a Bears fan, admit there’s likely no way the Packers don’t win the Super Bowl this year.

Well,,,that's if Pats get there...
Pack have a pretty easy trip there, since the NFC is weak. Pats are the only team that can match Packers point for point. Not Ravens…Not Big Ben…and certainly not St. Tebow.

Yes, he's going to have to take a paycut
that doesn’t mean he is going to be out of baseball. Mediocre players who realize that their value is down (to the point that they get non-tendered) realize that they’ll have to take a paycut.
Theriot is a thoroughly mediocre player. But he still plays a middle infield position. Someone will have him on their roster (at a price likely well below $3 million, of course).

If it were you
and your options were “substantial pay cut from $3.3m down to, say, $1 million to play baseball” versus “stay at home, make nothing and don’t play baseball”, what would you do?
This isn’t a guy who’s banked tons and tons of cash over the years. Im sure he’s willing to take whatever the going rate is for his services, even if that’s the MLB veterans’ minimum.

I really hope that you're being sarcastic...
In all likelihood, you’ll be hearing the name Theriot for years to come. Corey Patterson is still in baseball. Rich Hill is still in baseball. Ramon Ortiz is still in baseball. Hell, JEROME WILLIAMS is still in baseball. How in the hell is someone not going to call Ryan Theriot about a job, especially with his game being so full of “intangibles”? He’ll be playing (and stinking) into his 40’s, all the while thanking his hero David Epstein for creating the illusion of the value of a “scrappy player”.
by Damen Jackson on Dec 13, 2011 10:10 AM CST up reply actions
LOL, Jerome Williams did return.
I agree I fully expect that Ryan Theriot will appear in future MLB Games.
John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?
I don't know about playing into his 40s...
…but I wouldn’t bet against him playing in 2012. (Sorry, Al.) I’m not really sure where he’d fit at this point. Maybe the Astros?

The Astros wouldn't pay as much as Theriot would want for essentially a backup.
Baltimore. Maybe.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
Yeah, Baltimore would make sense.
But I don’t know how demanding Theriot would be salary-wise if he wants to stay in baseball. His overall value has been really low the last couple of years. And, interestingly enough, per Baseball-Reference’s WAR, he’s never been a particularly valuable player. Even in his “prime” with the Cubs, he never got his WAR over 2. Fangraphs valued him a little higher back then.

I do. Remember, this is the only player ever to take the Cubs to an arbitration hearing while Jim Hendry was GM. Has an extremely overinflated sense of his own value.

Not a good day for ex-Cubs.
Someone will pick up Theriot. Utility infield and get get on base with his bat (only his bat) occassionally.

Theriot is not a bad player
Not a good one either, certainly not an everyday shortstop. I recall Lou even played him a bit in the outfield in 07 while izturis was still on the team.
He’ll and somewhere. Perhaps Baltimore, as ex-Cubs seem to end up there …

well I kind of hope he's picked up by a NL Central team

I'm sure he'll be a backup somewhere
I think his biggest problem was his massive ego.
That being said, I would not be surprised if he returned to the Cubs in the next few years.

Just a weird coincidence
I have a baseball game for my phone, and it’s impossible to throw a runner out who’s stealing. I’m maybe 4 for 100. All four throw outs Ryan Theriot!!!!

I’ll bet he ends up on another winning team, somehow. Raking in more money, continuing to suck and going home to his beautiful wife every night.
I hate to say it, but I’d trade places with Ryan Theriot.

And in a related story...
…Mike Fontenot was tendered a contract by the Giants — over Jeff Keppinger. Why?
The nod went to Fontenot because of how well he played short.

Facepalm.
The Cubs should sign Keppinger, if only to stop him hitting AGAINST the Cubs.
Look at his lifetime numbers against the Cubs — by far his best against any team.

That is amazing.
And he’s had the most career PAs against the Cubs, too. But I still see Kep as an older version of Darwin Barney.

Poor Theriot
Loses his arb hearing because he wasn’t as good as he thought he was, and now he’s non-tendered. We’ll see him again, I’m sure, but he strikes me as a guy whose career could have gone in a completely different direction. Too bad ego probably got the best of him.

Disagree.
His career wasn’t derailed by his ego. He is a very limited player.
John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?
Oh no he had an ego
Like the kid who all of the sudden became the most popular kid in school and loved to brag about it. Just listen to any old interview at a Cubs convention or on WGN radio.
I didn't say that.
I don’t think his ego impacted his career as Craig seems to be implying.
John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?
You couldn't tell that when he came up, though.
He came up very fast, developed a following, developed the ego, and then stopped developing. At that point, his baserunning got worse, but his aggression made Lou fall in love with him. Same goes for those few dingers he hit in 2008 I believe, which seem to have made Lou think he was a great hitter. And then there were the few plays he made in the infield that caused Lou to look past the issue that his range wasn’t good.
You had Lou, the media, and the women all thinking he was the best thing ever and so he seemingly settled into continuing to do whatever it was that he did.

I do not understand all the hate because of his comments....
He WAS on the right side of the rivalry last year….
When the Cubs win something, the Cub fans can say something to him.
Until then, Cub fans just sound stupid for crying about him saying the obvious.
And of course he is going to get picked up by someone.
agree 2
The whining over his comments are silly. As I’ve said before some fans look for ways to be offended.
John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?
its not looking for something to get offended about...
its just that he was an incredibly mediocre player, making stupid comments. when Mark Grace said he couldnt play for the Chicago Cubs but he could play for the World Championship Diamondbacks, okay, fair statement, that guy gave 14 years to the Cubs and they let him go and he was a factor in that world series. Theriot, was and is a smarmy little turd with bad facial hair. and i know he was just trying to immediately get the STL fans on his side, but what he said was a little douchey.
So i you can give you can take it.
So was he wrong?
He got a ring. He was on the right side last season.
John Grabow - Who will pay you $4.8 million in 2012?
how many rings had he won with the Cardinals when he made the statement?
if he made the statement after they won the world series, sure, let him feel like he did something to contribute to that ring, what was it four at bats?
So i you can give you can take it.
theriot will tell his grandkids of his key RBI weak groundout to SS in game 6

Well, the 'Stros are looking for a SS, aren't they?
That’s the closest thing he has to a “hometown team”.
I wonder if any winning teams are going to take a flyer on him. He popped off about playing 2B for the Dodgers, and he popped off about moving to 2B when the Cards got Furcal. Most teams don’t like that attitude, especially if he is to be a bench player.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
Perhaps
he should’ve worried about bettering himself as ball player instead of taking jabs at his former team. I wouldn’t be disappointed if he never suited up again.
