That seller is delusional

If jerseys were priced proportionately according to a player’s major league ability, at that rate an autographed Albert Pujols jersey would go for about $8 million bucks.

Yes, he's going to have to take a paycut

that doesn’t mean he is going to be out of baseball. Mediocre players who realize that their value is down (to the point that they get non-tendered) realize that they’ll have to take a paycut.

Theriot is a thoroughly mediocre player. But he still plays a middle infield position. Someone will have him on their roster (at a price likely well below $3 million, of course).

by SouthernCub on Dec 13, 2011 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

If it were you

and your options were “substantial pay cut from $3.3m down to, say, $1 million to play baseball” versus “stay at home, make nothing and don’t play baseball”, what would you do?

This isn’t a guy who’s banked tons and tons of cash over the years. Im sure he’s willing to take whatever the going rate is for his services, even if that’s the MLB veterans’ minimum.

I really hope that you're being sarcastic...

In all likelihood, you’ll be hearing the name Theriot for years to come. Corey Patterson is still in baseball. Rich Hill is still in baseball. Ramon Ortiz is still in baseball. Hell, JEROME WILLIAMS is still in baseball. How in the hell is someone not going to call Ryan Theriot about a job, especially with his game being so full of “intangibles”? He’ll be playing (and stinking) into his 40’s, all the while thanking his hero David Epstein for creating the illusion of the value of a “scrappy player”.

by Damen Jackson on Dec 13, 2011 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, Baltimore would make sense.

But I don’t know how demanding Theriot would be salary-wise if he wants to stay in baseball. His overall value has been really low the last couple of years. And, interestingly enough, per Baseball-Reference’s WAR, he’s never been a particularly valuable player. Even in his “prime” with the Cubs, he never got his WAR over 2. Fangraphs valued him a little higher back then.

If anything his ego probably helped his career. He’s a professional athlete, being cocky and believing in yourself really isn’t a bad thing as long its not rubbing other players the wrong way.

by ak123 on Dec 13, 2011 5:08 PM CST up reply actions

You couldn't tell that when he came up, though.

He came up very fast, developed a following, developed the ego, and then stopped developing. At that point, his baserunning got worse, but his aggression made Lou fall in love with him. Same goes for those few dingers he hit in 2008 I believe, which seem to have made Lou think he was a great hitter. And then there were the few plays he made in the infield that caused Lou to look past the issue that his range wasn’t good.

You had Lou, the media, and the women all thinking he was the best thing ever and so he seemingly settled into continuing to do whatever it was that he did.

its not looking for something to get offended about...

its just that he was an incredibly mediocre player, making stupid comments. when Mark Grace said he couldnt play for the Chicago Cubs but he could play for the World Championship Diamondbacks, okay, fair statement, that guy gave 14 years to the Cubs and they let him go and he was a factor in that world series. Theriot, was and is a smarmy little turd with bad facial hair. and i know he was just trying to immediately get the STL fans on his side, but what he said was a little douchey.

That’s the closest thing he has to a “hometown team”.

I wonder if any winning teams are going to take a flyer on him. He popped off about playing 2B for the Dodgers, and he popped off about moving to 2B when the Cards got Furcal. Most teams don’t like that attitude, especially if he is to be a bench player.
