Dale Sveum, doing what his bosses told him to.
Dale Sveum’s bosses, doing it right.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Sure seems that way.
Although I can’t figure why Sveum would say anything at all.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Sometimes you have to say something...
even when you are really saying nothing.
Get 'em on, Get 'em over, Get 'em in!
"We're looking at a lot of options"?

Opt out option
is the most intriguing of those -

So to recap
… the Cubs are front-runners for Fielder, except they haven’t talked to him.
And the Blue Jays are getting Darvish, confirmed by a tweet that’s been deleted.

Not much payback for
hitting ‘refresh’ constantly the last 48 hours.
10-25-2011. Theo Epstein joins the Cubs. Now, the fun begins.
It's Twitter's fault
Journalism has gone in the toilet.
"I'm sore and I'm pissed off. I'm a baller. I want to feel the leather. I love thumb wars. 6-8 weeks? 6. follow me for healing, Jay Cutler does" - Jaysthumb twitter acct
Journalism was already in the toilet.
Twitter just pulled the handle.
"Stuff like this is why they should shut off the internet."

No, what whet in the toilet wasn't "journalism"...
Journalism died a quiet death in the late 80’s.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Blogs, sadly, ...
…put journalism in the toilet. Not to mention newspaper bosses concerned with high profits rather than solid reporting at affordable prices.
"Sir,--It has been wittily remarked that there are three kinds of falsehood: the first is a 'fib,' the second is a downright lie, and the third and most aggravated is statistics." *The National Observer* (June 13, 1891): p. 93-94.
Sounds about right.
Only thing is, you’re wrong.

clearly I'm an idiot because I just don't get it - can you 'splain it to me?
You’ve spent most of the day in a lot of threads bashing/debunking/deriding the “Blue Jays highest bid on Darvish” story as reported by the NYPost and cooberated by Bowden’s tweet, citing the less than stellar reputation of the NYPost as well as the subsequent deletion of Bowden’s tweet.
So far so good as I share in your dim view of these examples of “news reporting”.
But if these sources were so bad, why do you propagate their badness by writing that SBNation story? Why give crap more exposure? I know you pretty much slammed the sources in your article, but why write it in the first place if there’s nothing to it?
It’s like there’s two different Al’s here – there’s BCB Al and SBN Al. ;-)
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
You posted this on my Baseball Nation story
… and are trying to perpetuate the myth here.
Did you not understand Grant’s explanation? When a headline says “REPORT”, it means there’s a report. I am passing along information. Whether I think the sources were bad or not (and I’m inclined to think so), the information is out there. Part of the reason for doing it was, as you note, to slam the sources.
I don’t see any difference between what I do here and what I do there.

It's not a myth - it's a frustration with the crap that's out there
It’s easy enough to dismiss the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network because it would seem they jumped the shark a long time ago in terms of quality sports reporting.
It’s not so easy to do the same with a relatively new entity like SBNation that, at least IMO, had a unique perspective on sports and a great opportunity to bring some quality back into the picture. And it’s even harder to do when someone I know and respect is a part of it.
I get the REPORT part. What I don’t get is WHY there’s this need to pass along information that is fairly vapid to begin with, not to mention full of holes. Do you not think you’re just perpetuating the problem when you do so? And even if you don’t see it that way, do you not see how others could think that? Either way, this has probably already entered “agree to disagree” territory.
Call me naive, I guess. And color me disappointed as well. Oh well, as long as there’s still a Santa Claus out there to bring me presents, I guess I’ll get over it…

If I had just passed along the report
… without comment, I could see your criticism. However, I also wrote that I didn’t quite believe it, and for good reason. The commentary made it more than just “passing along information”.
Now does it make more sense?

Now does it make more sense?
You really need to stop taking the approach that those that don’t agree with you are confused.

When did I ever say he was confused?
Tried to explain my reasoning. It really didn’t call for you to take a swipe at me again, but you seem quite interested in doing that lately.

No, it doesn't.
You gave more life to a story you don’t quite believe. Maybe that’s part of being an ‘senior editor’ – I don’t know. It’s just not something I would have done.

Agree to disagree is right.
I passed along a report. Nothing more, nothing less.

Haven't "talked" to him...
So, have they…
communicated by semaphore?
by morse code?
by writing?
by poetry?
by mime?
sung out their potential bid?

Why talk to Prince Fielder when you can negotiate with Scott Boras
Your latest Bruce Levine update. And you know it’s credible because he said “sources” not “source”. Although one source good be the Starbucks Epstein stalker and he doesn’t count unless a soy latte is involved.
I would say that the Cubs are keeping their options open – open-ended negotiations with Boras (who waits out the market anyways) and a bid on Darvish that can’t really hurt them (if you win the bid, negotiate only to terms that you’re comfortable with or let the 30 days expire).
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…
"Just shut up and play" - Matt Garza
"Pain is inevitable, suffering is an option." - Dale Sveum
In the past
… Boras has made teams bid against themselves for his clients’ services.
Better now to make him and his clients wait, I think.
