... at around 7-8 pm CT, according to this tweet from Fox Sports' Jon Morosi. The Nippon Ham Fighters are expected to accept the bid, and we'll find out the winning team and the amount.

CBS Sports' Danny Knobler adds:

"While people in baseball have speculated that it is the Blue Jays (others say Blue Jays or Rangers), the actual information has been so tightly held that it can't be sure that the speculation is accurate."

OK, let me reword my statement.
Two national reporters are speculating that the Darvish announcement will come Monday night.

Better?

Or maybe you’ll believe this tweet instead:

Fighters will announce tomorrow late morning, 明日日ハムは受理する、#ダルビッシュ#darvish

That’s from Don Nomura, Darvish’s agent. (Late morning Japan time Tuesday, which is Monday night in the USA, he clarified in a further tweet.

(And yes, I know you were joking. Mostly joking, anyway.)

Same here

If it’s for a price that the management feels makes sense, I really want to see them take this chance.

There’s no question that there is a lot of help needed in the farm system, but this could bridge the gap. And with the new CBA, maybe they need to spend more on MLB-ready talent than they’d planned to.

Darvish and Fielder could make the Cubs fringe contenders in 2012. They’d most likely make them a lot more entertaining to watch than the 2011 version.

Also...

He’ll be 32 (just about prime for a ML Starting Pitcher)

He averages about 200 innings per year

His WHIP for the last 3 years is better than any or our starters

His K/BB ratio was 2.7 (the 36th best in the NL last year), only Garza (3.13) was better in our rotation.

Oh yeah…in almost 800 innings of ML pitching he has committed a grand total of one (1) error.

But he did give up a dinger in the playoffs..so forget all that other stuff…let’s spend $150 million dollars on a pitcher with some pretty big upside, but zero ML experience and just hope for the best.

by Shanghai Badger on Dec 19, 2011 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

without quibbling on the list

there are some other factors that go into Darvish that make him more appealing (you cited some of the reasons that make him less – posting fee, lack of mlb success)

1) age, darvish is 25, going on 26. The FA SP’s listed will carry a contract into their 30’s and for some of them deep into their 30’s.

2) Darvish’s posting fee will be a one-time cost, which can be looked at as a negative or a positive. The negative side is the big chunk of change up front just to negotiate. The positive side is it isn’t a big contract weighing down payroll for years to come. Plenty of pitchers making 8-12 million can get moved, few pitchers making him 15+ million get moved in trades.

3) Cost of compensating – Darvish doesn’t cost draft picks to acquire.

Are all of those positives worth spending $110-$120 million on Darvish? I’ll let the Cubs decide, but there are worthwhile positives and negatives on both sides of the equation.

Those are all good points and I'm glad you raised them.

1) At one point, I was all for this thing—who wouldn’t want a potential ace at that age? The price has just gotten too high. If the Cubs were fringe contenders this year, I’d be more inclined to consider it. They’re not, though. They could be next year if they hold on to that money and spend it on that free agent crop. I don’t expect all of those guys to still be available, but a few/most will be.

2) I’m still not even sure the Cubs have 50M to spend up front. We don’t know where they are in this bidding process (as we’ve exhaustively discussed), so I won’t go there again. But on top of that, I get the feeling that Darvish is going to run up the price of his contract—despite having just one team negotiating. If he tops Matsuzaka’s posting fee, I can guarantee he will top Dice K’s contract too. Especially at his age, I feel like he might be willing to go back and do this thing again next year if he doesn’t get the money he wants.

3) No argument here. Although, with the new CBA, those draft picks aren’t quite as valuable as they once were.

Thank you for the reasonable counterpoints.

by mic on Dec 19, 2011 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't worry about the Cubs having the money

Unless you’re an accountant for the team, you’ll never know what money they have. They have numerous revenue streams and they are one of the top MLB markets. Their payroll has gone as high as $144M. So this is not unchartered territory here. We’re not talking about PIT here.

I’m sure the Cubs bid what they were comfortable paying up front.

I was saying,

I don’t think the Cubs have 50M to spend up front, THEREFORE, I still don’t think they went that high. That’s neither here nor there in this wait-and-see mode that Al insists on, though.

Rangers and Blue Jays SEEM to be in the forefront just because of the optimal revenue streams they have (the one the Cubs don’t have: a good TV deal). I agree that it seems that the Cubs SHOULD be able to run with these guys—I mean, it’s the Chicago Cubs—but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I anticipate them being more frugal until they are able to improve their business model.

by mic on Dec 19, 2011 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

If history tells us one thing

It’s that it would be foolish to think the Cubs don’t have the money to spend.

And Cubs' history has been so fruitful.

I’m not saying they CAN’T or WON’T spend, but so far we’re in year three of Ricketts regime and the payroll is significantly lower than it was a couple years ago.

I expect them to operate more frugally and to build from within as they keep saying. Eventually, I bet they’ll be spending like the Red Sox, but before doing that, they have to rebuild their personell and infrastructure.

by mic on Dec 19, 2011 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

i think they may smell an opportunity to compete

in theo’s initial press conferences they talked about not giving away any chance at competing because those moments were precious but at the same time leaning towards something that won’t damage the future when compared to weighing the merits of competing right away

a move like Darvish or Fielder, or even Kuroda (when paired with Fielder), would seem to placate both interests. Their moves that can help move the needle closer to where if everything breaks right we could compete and (depending on price) may not severely hamper the future.

With Pujols leaving the division and the Brewers potentially losing Braun for 50 games plus losing Fielder, I think the target came back down and its become a little more plausible that they could compete with a few big splashes, while simultaneously not destroying the future (assuming a Fielder contract isn’t 8+ years).

I dont think this means they’ve over-extend themselves to compete this year, but I think if they feel the price is appropriate they may be more apt to deploy that capital now as opposed to next year.

No, the payroll has been pretty high

From Cots
2011: $134,004,000
2010: $144,359,000
2009: $134,809,000

I’ll be surprised if they win the bid on Darvish. And surprised if they land Fielder. But since the new CBA will limit the bottom-up rebuilding, it may make sense to spend now.

Seems to me that I said
If it’s for a price that the management feels makes sense

OH! And I bet half that list signs an extension before free agency.

Step Two: Develop an organizational plan

by Shanghai Badger on Dec 19, 2011 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

What I'm arguing is this:

That price should not make sense for the new management.

Whether Dice K was a mistake for Epstein before seems to be still up in the air since he was a big part of their World Series run, but they were so much closer than the Cubs are now. As I said before, if the Cubs were on the fringe, I’d consider it.

And I bet only a quarter of that list signs an extension. If the Cubs are smart, they can set themselves up for at least two. Depending on who’s still available, I’d like to see Cain/Hamels/Greinke (one of these) + Santana/Marcum/Danks (one of these).

by mic on Dec 19, 2011 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I'm deferring to their judgement on what is too much.

As far as your wish list goes, I don’t have too much of an issue with it, other than I think Greinke and a larger market aren’t a good fit due to his anxiety issues, and I’d be concerned about Santana’s health.

Darvish, Kuroda, Fielder

if we somehow added those 3 names, I think the team could get back to a .500 projection or so and from there with a little luck we could contend

That’s a plan that helps build the future of the team without negatively impacting the long-term salary structure (outside of Fielder).

It would require a lot of cash up-front, but would set us up with building blocks in the rotation (Garza, Darvish), up the middle (Castro, Soto), and a cornerstone bat (Fielder). I think that’s the best offseason plan I could expect from the Cubs

it comes down to if they can afford darvish and fielder

kuroda’s cost will be a minor one compared to those two. In total it would require an outlay of 80-90 million in year 1, 50 million in yr2 (40 comes off the books from Byrd, Dempster, Zambrano alone)

its a big up-front price to pay, for sure. But within the context of the long-term salary configurations I don’t think it’s unreasonable. The question is whether they have 80-90 million to put towards it this year

follow me on twitter for fantasy sports analysis @http://twitter.com/DrewDinkmeyer or get the full analysis at www.fantistics.com

by DartmouthCubsFan on Dec 19, 2011 10:20 AM CST up reply actions

it would allow the Cubs to move Zambrano, Wells also

and save some salary that way, then bring in wakefield (if Theo and crew wanted to have 6 starters available like they did in Boston), or RoLo

For example, the Marlins are still out there looking for pitching. If we offered to pay half of Zambrano’s contract, i’m sure they’d be interested and that frees up another 10 million this year.

Now from a financial standpoint is that worth it? To basically pay Kuroda+Zambrano say 22 million instead of Zambrano 19 when they’re projected to be somewhat similar pitchers? It probably is given the history with the Cubs and Z and given the transition advantage for having Hiroki here with Yu (if there’s any to that at all)

Crazy as it sounds, I don't think you need more than two of those three to get to .500.

Considering whatever fifth starter you have will automatically be better than RussellLopezColemanDavisWhatever and not an autoloss, you pick up at least six/seven wins from the fifth spot. All of a sudden you’re at 77, 78 wins and you can probably come up with a few more from better defense and potentially non-toxic RISP averages. If you can get Fielder, he’s good for four or five wins all by himself. That’s over .500.

My eyeball tells me

that if this team is even average at RISP, OBP, and defense, the pitching should be good enough for .500 in this weak division. I’m tired of worrying about replacing solo homers and 200 strikeouts with more solo homers and another 200 strikeouts. Wrigley Field hasn’t been a haven for Earl Weaver baseball for a while now, so I’d prefer to see a defensive oriented team that doesn’t need two or more longballs every game to put some runs on the board.

…in the words of that great philosopher…ummm….errrr….hmmm…some hillbilly guy…“If you wanna dance, you gotta pay the fiddler”. Darvish is a risk, for sure, but, it needs to be done. Same with Fielder. They’re young AND keepers for 5 – 8 years, if all goes well. Epstein said he wants to build a winner…well, those 2 + Starlin Castro and Matt Garza are a pretty good foundation. Now, add one or 2 guys from the minors and a trade or 2 and we’re good again. Maybe not in 2012, but, watch out after that. Just my opinion…have at it.

Well, when someone tweets "I think X is going to happen. Just a hunch."

Then yes, there’s pretty much no value in that. But when guys are passing on information from GM’s and executives, I don’t think it should automatically be dismissed outright. If Heyman took the info he tweeted and wrote an article entitled “Blue Jays lose Darvish bid,” based on that information, then yes, that would be wrong and irresponsible. But he’s not doing that. He’s just passing along what he was told. No one’s jumping to conclusions.

Part I – the Nippon Ham Fighters announce whether or not they accept the high bid?
Part II – MLB announces who the high-bidding team is?

Or has MLB already told NHF who the high bidding team is (in addition to the amount) and NHF will announce both at the same time (assuming they accept which it sounds like they will).

Random thought

Hello all. 1st time poster, long time reader.

Anyway, I remember reading in the paper after the Red Sox won the Dice-K bidding that they expected to recoup all the posting money in jersey and merchandise sales alone. I think they said that the MLB team gets $40 from each jersey sold. I think that Theo and company know that with the rabid international fan base of Cubs fans that they can pretty much bank on getting all the posting money back in one or two years. Then, it’s just an issue of whether they think he is worth 5 yrs/65 mil or whatever contract he would get.

I don't disagree with that.

But, IMO, if the Cubs were going to deal Garza… they’d simply have to get an absolutely top notch SP. I wouldn’t want a ‘quantity for quality’ deal… and I don’t think any of those guys could headline a trade.

But I’d be estatic with a return of Rizzo, Syndergaard, and Drabek. I think Syndergaard can be a top notch SP as well as Drabek, whom I still believe in. nine years of club control is the way I read it.

so if this had been after year 8, then yeah – if he doesn’t like the Rangers offer, he goes back, plays one more year and then he’s FA.

But I don’t think he’s already put in 8, so he probably has a few more years before he can play the FA card.

The only good news...

Is that the puns will end.

I am stunned that Epstein and Hoyer would not exceed the Dice-K amount knowing that Darvish is clearly the superior pitcher. So let’s recap:

Cubs get David DeJesus, Ian Stewart, and a McDonald’s.

This team is clearly going to take its time rebuilding. Garza is clearly going to be moved.

I guess I’m cool with it, but… I do think that adding Darvish and Fielder would have made this team competitive next year, without impacting the future. Now I have my doubts about what this team can afford to do.

They also know that following that 51.7 million posting fee, Darvish will be looking for something in the 5/65 - 5/75 range

5 Years of control for 110-120 million would make Darvish one of the highest paid pitchers in baseball based on AAV. That’s a massive risk, and after Dice-K not working out nearly as well as they had anticipated and with this Cubs team still being a ways from serious contention, they likely thought better of it.

With the Cubs investing in a new DR academy in 2012, what effect will the new CBA have on the procurement process. Since we have a set amount to spend is this really a great investment at this point or will players jump at the opportunity to play at a brand new facility and we make greater inroads in the DR community and get guys to sign for less. Also, with next yrs free agent pitching crop looking strong, if the Cubs plan on going that route, are top 12 picks protected, I can’t find out any info. Thanks and I’ll log off for your answer

We didn’t bid in the 60-65 range, offer Darvish a contract we know he wouldn’t accept (so we don’t have to pay the absurd posting fee), just to take him off the market thus driving up the price for Garza.

I'm curious to know what the Cubs bid was, of course

And what the perception of the Cubs is from this. From Patrick Mooney at CSN Chicago

As Christmas approaches, look for the Cubs to go shopping for value. Pitchers like Paul Maholm, Joe Saunders and possibly Tim Wakefield would fit into their offseason profile more than Darvish.

The bolded part doesn’t make sense to me. The Cubs did put in a bid on Darvish. So they have shown the intent to spend money on the right player. Darvish was a two step process and the Cubs took the first step.

I know that you're probably tired of hearing from me about Darvish, Risky.

But I really think the Darvish anticipation around here was built around a lot of bad assumptions. Al was predicting a $30 million posting fee, more than $20 million less than the Texas offer, even though this offer was pretty close to the Daisuke offer from Boston. I never really understood why anyone could realistically hope for 40 percent lower posting fee for Darvish.

I think everybody took that $30 million theory and ran with it, figuring that such a number would somehow allow the Cubs to get Fielder and Darvish. But, to me, it seemed like a number set to fit what the Cubs MIGHT be able to afford in 2012 — amorphous amortization talk aside — rather than what Darvish would really bring in.

My guess? Theo put in a (relatively) low bid to see if he could catch the other teams napping — but he knew that anything in the Daisuke range wouldn’t be worth it for the Cubs RIGHT NOW, given the rotting leftovers from the Hendry era. This would jibe with the much-maligned tweet from Cafardo about the Cubs’ offer being “very low” and the talk for the past few days that Texas and Toronto were the front runners.

I’m still banking on the Cubs getting Fielder, mainly because the upfront cost won’t be as bad (no posting fee), because Fielder would seem to fit TheoJed’s stated strategy and because he’s more of a proven commodity. Oh, and because the Cubs do have some money to spend and a glaring hole at first base. The best thing about the Darvish news that we can say for sure right now is that Texas probably can’t afford Fielder.

And, honestly, I think we’re going to look back on this and be fine with the outcome. Right now, paying $50-plus million to be able to negotiate a $75 million contract with Darvish (the talk is he’ll get CJ money) isn’t the right move for the Cubs. Hell, it could have very easily resulted in another contract akin to Soriano’s: Understandable when it was signed given the market and competition but far too much to pay, creating and immovable object for several years.

Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

by elgato on Dec 20, 2011 8:57 AM CST up reply actions

I never thought $30M

I think $50M range was a to-be-expected amount. Dice-K was the comparable player, regardless of his subsequent MLB stats. And I doubt Theo and Jed thought they could catch someone napping. Sorry, that’s just wishful fan thinking (our GM is smarter than other GMs).

I would not state that Texas is out of it for Fielder, if they wanted him. Like the Angels, they recently signed a new TV deal with Fox.

As for the Cubs payroll, I would advise against trying to be a Cubs Fantasy Accountant. Let’s face it, you can find more stats about a Japanese baseball player than you can about the Cubs various income streams. So trying to say what the Cubs can afford/can’t afford is pure conjecture.

If I had to pick one or the other, I would go for Fielder or Darvish.

'Fantasy accountant'?

It’s not that big of an assumption (or ‘pure conjecture’) to say the Cubs could afford Fielder at $25 million in 2012. That’s not to say that they will, but it’s been reported that the team will have about $100 million in obligations (guys under contract, guys likely to be re-signed, arb guys).

If we’re set at third, if we’re set at right and if there are no other big-money pitchers in the Cubs’ plans — and, at the moment, there is nothing to indicate their interest in anyone more expensive than Paul Maholm, or maybe Joe Saunders — then there is money left for a Fielder signing if you figure the Cubs’ payroll doesn’t have to go down in 2012.

Don't ask me - I never said $30M

I don’t remember Al using that figure. If he did, ask him.

I understand that the Cubs are not likely to get back up to a $144M payroll. But that’s a decision by managament. I don’t know of that as a constraint of the payroll. I have never read a report of the Cubs concerned with attendance and it’s affect on payroll, ala the white sox.

From Al's post on Dec. 9:
It’s been speculated that the posting fee for Darvish will be around $30 million — quite a bit of money, but less than the $51,111,111.11 posted by Theo’s Red Sox for Dice-K. Take that and add a five-year deal for around $60 million and the Cubs will have a top starter in his prime years. And if they don’t come to a contract agreement, the Cubs get the posting fee back. This ESPN Dallas article explains how it works:

http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2011/12/9/2623111/cubs-yu-darvish-nippon-ham-fighters-posting

I don’t know what speculation Al was referring to. And my original point was that the $30 million fee happened to coincide (particularly if it was amortized) with what the Cubs could pay as part of a Fielder/Darvish package without exceeding (or coming close to) last year’s payroll.

Wait ...

given the difference in the exchange rate, wouldn’t a $30 million posting fee for Darvish be equivalent to the Ham Fighters getting a third (or thereabouts) for Darvish as was received for Daisuke?

$30 million U.S. is worth about 2.3 billion yen.

In other words, the change in exchange rates would have been more likely to drive the price for Darvish up, not down.

That doesn't make sense

You’re trying to insert a change in the exchange rate into a single bidding process. But Yu Darvish was not available to bid on in 2006. So he is not cheaper now due to the change in the exchange rate. That would only apply if you continued to purchase the same item over time – These jeans are cheaper now due to the exchange rate. It doesn’t matter what the exchange rate is – the winning bid was $51.7M.

And the Nippon Ham Fighters do not have to receive the posting fee in yen. They can decide to hold the posting fee in a dollar based account until such a time as the exchange rate is more favorable.
