Cubs Sign Reed Johnson To One-Year Deal

Glad he's back!
I was watching MLB networks 50 greatest catches of All-Time the other night, and I didn’t see a single Reed Johnson highlight. I was beyond disappointed.

Here you go
Reed Johnson robs Prince Fielder of a grand slam, April 12, 2009
Reed Johnson makes diving catch against Yankees, June 17, 2011
Reed Johnson’s spectacular catch against the Nationals, April 25, 2008
I should note that MLB.com makes it as difficult as possible to search their archives for video. Dumb.

Sidenote,
are we not able to watch old games on MLB.com anymore? I’m bored at work and I thought I’d watch the 4/12/09 game, but all I can get is the radio broadcast and gamecast. I know I’ve watched archived games before. What changed?

Mrs. Zeke and I were at the 4/12/2009 game in Milwaukee (Easter Sunday night).
When he hit it, the bat sound said “LONG GONE”.
I thought to myself S**T! Tie game. Dammit! … and slumped my head down.
When the roar of the home crowd turned to “WOAH! – WHAT?”, I looked up and couldn’t believe Reed was throwing the ball back into the infield as the runners at 2nd and 1st retreated to their respective bags.
They replayed the catch on the big screen and I still couldn’t believe what I saw.
Amazing.
There are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. Who says baseball isn't a religion? (Now #8452 in the Cubs Season Ticket Wait List...)
I was at that game, too.
Probably the greatest catch I have ever seen in person.

Few people today are as good at navigating wrigley and understanding the “quirks” as Reed IMHO.
That April 12, 2009 game...
I was there and I will always remember how Prince tipped his batting helmet to Reed after the catch. It’s at the very end of that video. Classy. From that point on I became a Prince Fielder fan. Hope the Cubs can snare him.
Some day. Maybe.
And for those few who have questioned Fielder's attitude and whether he would fit in here...
…watch that first clip and see what Prince does at the end.

looks like we're building depth for a midseason trade
with byrd, dejesus, soriano, and reed we have 4 OFs already under contract to start the season.
I’d imagine we won’t see Brett Jackson until mid-season with the Cubs looking to dangle Byrd at the deadline

Totally agree on that, which I have to say seems like a reversal on the way Hendry did business
Hendry laid out a couple of guys he was willing to trade. If there wasn’t a market, he basically said “welp, I can’t get anything done”
Theo/Jed seem to be operating with a plan B and Plan C in mind. It’s one of the reasons why I’m not particularly thrilled with some of their decisions or seeming decisions (I still think we don’t go after Prince and that annoys me) I’m willing to see what happens.

My gut says we're going to get Fielder.
But I fully acknowledge that I might not be making an unbiased prediction.
My hope is that getting Wood instead of Maholm (and shedding Marshall’s salary) is enough cost savings (maybe $13 million next season?) to get Fielder. Of course, the 2012 money might not be the real issue.

There was a comment in a story a while back...
I’ve linked to it a couple times but I’m not feeling particularly motivated for searching my own archives right now. (You want to dig for it, feel free!) It was from a Zambrano story, anyway, and the gist of it was that Theo said Ricketts had given him the authority to eat any contract necessary to significantly improve the team.
We may yet see something of that.
On his good days in the outfield, Soriano’s an average defender. He doesn’t have that many good days, and is likely to have fewer with age. His bat is also far too inconsistent to justify his iffy defense much longer.
I'm just saying I haven't seen any indication that Soriano ...
will be traded.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
The more days pass, the more I think that was lip service
Theo said Ricketts had given him the authority to eat any contract necessary to significantly improve the team.
I mean that was clearly aimed at Zambrano and Soriano, and yet he’s not eaten either one of their contracts. I suppose Theo could say he doesn’t think cutting them loose significantly improves the team, but I get the feeling Theo was playing a PR game there. I guess we’ll see when the offseason plays out

Both are overpaid but useful pieces
Z is still probably the 2nd best starter on this team (no worse than 3rd). Soriano is still at worst a viable short side of a platoon with Bryan LaHair in Left.
If we can get out of their contracts I say do it.
If we are paying them to play elsewhere then I say pass.

They each will make $18M+ in 2012
Without taking back Carlos Silva Part 2, I can’t think of any way that the Cubs could part with either player without paying some of the freight.
If there was a team available for that deal, it would be done by now.

Agreed
I just don’t see a point in paying more than a token amount to send Carlos Zambrano somewhere else in 2012. Unless
1. We get 10 million or more in salary relief
2. We get a legitimate prospect back
I have a feeling that a focused Z pitching for his next contract will be fairly effective.
I’d be thrilled if he reverts back to 2010 form
11-6 3.33 ERA 8.1 K/9 8.3 H/9
Those are the components of a legitimate NL #2 starter.

Also, it’s possible that they think Byrd will bounce back and increase his trade value by midseason.
Where have you gone, Kiko Calero. A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
That could be it as well.
Jackson did OPS .939 in 215 PAs in Iowa this year, but maybe they want to try to maximize Byrd’s value for a deadline deal.

2011 Was Most Likely an Aberration, But...
Johnson actually hit slightly better against RHP than LHP in 2011. The knock on Johnson has been that he can’t hit righties. Oh, well! I’m not expecting him to hit .312 against righties as he did in 2011. I’m hopeful that he can maybe hit .270 against righties. I doubt that he’ll get all that many AB’s versus RHP anyway. But remember only Cubs fans could argue for hours the pros and cons of signing a backup outfielder. That's actually a pretty good comp.
Reed Johnson is a useful bench player, not only because of his attitude and “grittiness”, but because he has these useful abilities:
- he hits lefthanders quite well (career .311/.369/.464 in over 1200 PA)
- he plays outstanding defense
Any team could use a guy like that. I’m glad he’ll be a Cub for at least another year.
