Glad he's back!

I was watching MLB networks 50 greatest catches of All-Time the other night, and I didn’t see a single Reed Johnson highlight. I was beyond disappointed.

Sidenote,

are we not able to watch old games on MLB.com anymore? I’m bored at work and I thought I’d watch the 4/12/09 game, but all I can get is the radio broadcast and gamecast. I know I’ve watched archived games before. What changed?

Mrs. Zeke and I were at the 4/12/2009 game in Milwaukee (Easter Sunday night).

When he hit it, the bat sound said “LONG GONE”.

I thought to myself S**T! Tie game. Dammit! … and slumped my head down.

When the roar of the home crowd turned to “WOAH! – WHAT?”, I looked up and couldn’t believe Reed was throwing the ball back into the infield as the runners at 2nd and 1st retreated to their respective bags.

They replayed the catch on the big screen and I still couldn’t believe what I saw.

Amazing.

with byrd, dejesus, soriano, and reed we have 4 OFs already under contract to start the season.

I’d imagine we won’t see Brett Jackson until mid-season with the Cubs looking to dangle Byrd at the deadline

Totally agree on that, which I have to say seems like a reversal on the way Hendry did business

Hendry laid out a couple of guys he was willing to trade. If there wasn’t a market, he basically said “welp, I can’t get anything done”

Theo/Jed seem to be operating with a plan B and Plan C in mind. It’s one of the reasons why I’m not particularly thrilled with some of their decisions or seeming decisions (I still think we don’t go after Prince and that annoys me) I’m willing to see what happens.

My gut says we're going to get Fielder.

But I fully acknowledge that I might not be making an unbiased prediction.

My hope is that getting Wood instead of Maholm (and shedding Marshall’s salary) is enough cost savings (maybe $13 million next season?) to get Fielder. Of course, the 2012 money might not be the real issue.

There was a comment in a story a while back...

I’ve linked to it a couple times but I’m not feeling particularly motivated for searching my own archives right now. (You want to dig for it, feel free!) It was from a Zambrano story, anyway, and the gist of it was that Theo said Ricketts had given him the authority to eat any contract necessary to significantly improve the team.

We may yet see something of that.

On his good days in the outfield, Soriano’s an average defender. He doesn’t have that many good days, and is likely to have fewer with age. His bat is also far too inconsistent to justify his iffy defense much longer.

The more days pass, the more I think that was lip service
Theo said Ricketts had given him the authority to eat any contract necessary to significantly improve the team.

I mean that was clearly aimed at Zambrano and Soriano, and yet he’s not eaten either one of their contracts. I suppose Theo could say he doesn’t think cutting them loose significantly improves the team, but I get the feeling Theo was playing a PR game there. I guess we’ll see when the offseason plays out

Both are overpaid but useful pieces

Z is still probably the 2nd best starter on this team (no worse than 3rd). Soriano is still at worst a viable short side of a platoon with Bryan LaHair in Left.

If we can get out of their contracts I say do it.

If we are paying them to play elsewhere then I say pass.

Agreed

I just don’t see a point in paying more than a token amount to send Carlos Zambrano somewhere else in 2012. Unless

1. We get 10 million or more in salary relief
2. We get a legitimate prospect back

I have a feeling that a focused Z pitching for his next contract will be fairly effective.

I’d be thrilled if he reverts back to 2010 form

11-6 3.33 ERA 8.1 K/9 8.3 H/9

Those are the components of a legitimate NL #2 starter.

RoLo hasn’t been a league-average starter since 2006. And I’m not saying we should get both — or either if the Marshall deal goes through. But they’re worth considering on reasonable deals.

This is great news but seeing as how we might be bringing another Wood onto the team...

…now we have to find another Johnson to keep pace. Josh or Kelly would be fine with me.

Hmmm, the new market inefficiency.

Doubling up on player names.

Why does Reed like the Cubs so much?

reminds me of

Rex Hudler alot. Reed plays the game with 100% perspiration and very little natural talent. He’s gritty and what this team needs.

That's actually a pretty good comp.

Reed Johnson is a useful bench player, not only because of his attitude and “grittiness”, but because he has these useful abilities:

  • he hits lefthanders quite well (career .311/.369/.464 in over 1200 PA)
  • he plays outstanding defense

Any team could use a guy like that. I’m glad he’ll be a Cub for at least another year.
