Theo Compensation
I am a huge Red Sox fan and I am wondering who the Red Sox will get from the Cubs in terms of compensation for being able to get Theo Epstein on the Chicago Cubs. I have many ideas and I would love to run them by everyone in Bleed Cubbie Blue. Comment, please stay repectful...
-Theo and Drake Britton for Ben Wells
-Theo for Junior Lake
-Theo and Zander Bogaerts for Alfonso Soriano
Let me know!

We like to keep laughing about
how it isn’t resolved.

I like that 3rd idea of yours.
And I won’t even bother looking up Zoolander Bogart!
Respectful? Were you scared coming in here? We’re all real friendly, except for (REDACT), (REDACT), and that effin (REDACT) guy.
Enjoy the banter!
Its not the Sveum ol' song.

Q: Why did Theo Epstein cross the road?
A: To Dump Garza
Yeah.
The Red Sox can have Soriano and they don’t even have to give another player in return. Just take his contract.

or half his contract

I suppose they could throw in Bogaerts if they want.
18 year old shortstops who hit 15+ HR in A ball are a dime a dozen, but I suppose we could make room….
In all seriousness, I felt like Lake would have been proper compensation.
But the longer this gets drawn out, the more I’m convinced its going to be a fairly insignificant low level guy or two.
They could have signed Grabow
as compensation.

I'm still guessing Lake will be the guy
I'm wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I'm choking to death!
It wouldn't kill us.
I’m a big fan of Lake, but his poor plate discipline scares the hell out of people, and is what may hold him back from being a good major leaguer.
I keep thinking
the Sox are going to get Rafael Dolis. But I’d happily part with Junior Lake since I’m not very high on him. Except the Sox will probably convert him to a pitcher and he’d become their next closer.
I can't imagine it will be anyone as high-profile as Dolis.

Probably not anymore
I was thinking that back when the Red Sox actually had some leverage.

to me i thought Flaherty or Gonzalez would of been about right.
add on that they didnt protect them in the rule V, not sure why they didnt go for that.
They might have,
if they weren’t Rule 5d

I don't see how it matters
what we think. Nobody on this or any other message board has any information that could lead to an educated guess on what the compensation will be.
what are you talking about...
Al Yellon made a deal with the Cubs so Bleed Cubbie Blue has one choice to fully make a trade :) LOL
Then I hope we deal directly with you and I speak for us all when I say
We accept trade #3. Also, no taksies backsies.
would offering a box of Boston Baked Beans be ironic?

no, but a bucket of fried chicken and a case of beer would be...

I'll take Theo & a lobster for Soriano
I don’t want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it.

If you are expecting anything exciting,
prepare to be disapointed.

Marlon Byrd?
They could use him in right field and platoon him with Ryan Sweeney. Or they could move Ellsbury to right field and have Byrd and Sweeney play center field. Moving Byrd would open up center field for Brett Jackson on the Cubs.
i wouldn't call byrd a major league player
Just wee-un.

Really?
Some people sour on players in an awfully big hurry. Byrd isn’t a superstar, but he is certainly a capable major league player and by all accounts a class act.
I can't stand Byrd's play.
But he’s a good guy and a league average CF. I’d love to see him traded asap, but he definitely has value to somebody. As for sending him for compensation, that probably won’t happen, but I could see the BoSox as a potential trade partner for him and the Cubs.
bizarre statement ... really bizarre

Trading players for front office personnel still seems really strange to me
A buddy of mine said that instead of a player, the Cubs should give Boston three secretaries and an accountant for Theo. Seems fair to me.
Yeah, I know there should be an apostrophe in "Vails," but punctuation wasn't an option when I signed up.

It is comical
How this has dragged into 2012. I was fearing a top player in the system now I think it will be a player of less importance.
I thought the Theo compensation deal had an expiration date of December 31, 2011

can we just give them a GM TBNL and move along?
Q: Why did Theo Epstein cross the road?

I'm still amused
by suggestions kicked-around in Red Sox forums after Theo signed. Some chucklehead was seriously advocating both Garza and Castro. Others pushed for one of either Garza or Castro. Still others thought B. Jackson along with 1-or-2 of our other top-10 prospects was realistic. Sounds like their expectations are coming back to earth..
I'm wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I'm choking to death!
We don't know
It could still be Castro (it isn’t, but we don’t know). Nobody has the slightest clue what the compensation will be, so to speculate when we have nothing to base it on seems completely pointless. It’s not like trade proposals (which are admittedly still a little silly) where we have past deals to compare.

Someone wrote something
today (I think maybe it was Heyman?) that the Red Sox were still hoping to include Garza in the talks. The Cubs aren’t going to give them Garza for Epstein, but it suggests that their asking price is high and that they may still be considering MLB players.
I could see Wells going over if the Cubs can add some more pitching.
Ben Wells?
No chance. Randy Wells is off the table as they said no major league players.
I think if it was part of a bigger trade package
then yes.

Well Selig has back-tracked on the this
First he gave a deadline, then extended it, and now it’s “It’s like cleaning the garage,” Cherington said in the interview. “You know it’s out there and you’ve got to do it, but you’re going to do everything else first….”
So if the deadline has changed, the compensation rules could too.

Fine.
They can have Garza…. IF they also take Soriano and his entire contract.
Then the Cubs would have enough payroll room to sign Prince Fielder.
Join us for complete MLB coverage at SB Nation's Baseball Nation
You don't trade Garza for a salary dump.
He’s the one piece that you can rebuild your minor leagues around.
This wouldn't be a salary dump.
It would allow room to sign Fielder.
(And I was joking. Mostly.)

I don't know if they do.
But take at least $18 million off the payroll for the next three years? That’d make LOTS of room.

Heck, send Zambrano and his contract over there, too.
Maybe they could even lower ticket prices then.

Soriano, Zambrano, Garza, Marmol and Dempster
with no cash included, for Theo, and now we can really go shopping with the salaries left
Q: Why did Theo Epstein cross the road?
A: To Dump Garza
They're not getting Garza as compensation
I think the idea would be that the Cubs would trade Garza to the Red Sox and that the Red Sox would waive compensation as a part of the trade.
But the Cubs would still get someone like Anthony Ranaudo plus for Garza as well.
I very much doubt this would happen. Better to let Bud arbitrate.
if we leave it to Bud
is there a chance we end up in the Pacific Coast league and they move to the NL West before it is all over??

We get dealt to Japan for
the Nippon Ham Fighters. But neither team relocates.

exactly no one relocates, but somehow we move divisions

Don't view it as just the Theo compensation
Think of the Theo compensation as possibly a component in a bigger deal. The Cubs trade Garza and a prospect and get back 3-4 prospects. The Cubs prospect is, in effect, the Theo compensation.

What about Bryan LaHair?
Cubs sign Prince Fielder to play first base and then trade LaHair to the Red Sox. Boston gets a backup first baseman for Youkilis who can also spell Ortiz at DH.
They have Adrian Gonzalez at first base
They really have no need for Bryan LaHair. On the other hand, we do because we’re not signing Fielder.
I'm guessing that we're going to find out that the agreement to not sign any Red Sox FO people until 2014
Is going to be a massive part of this compensation… they’ll probably get a C prospect throw in or cash.
Perhaps the compensation could be in the form of action NOT taken...
…such as we promise not to trade Garza to the Yankees.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I doubt it,
if they offer Banuelos and Betances.
10-25-2011. Theo Epstein joins the Cubs. Now, the fun begins.
That's actually a pretty intriguing idea.
Go to the Sox and say “We like the Yankees trade proposal best… otherwise its the Jays and we’re ready to move him. But we’ll bite the bullet and not do either deal as the compensation. Deal?” And if they then agree… you send him to the Tigers (perhaps as the intention all along) or keep him.
Done and done.

Everyone can take this for what it's worth...
But, when I talked to him a month-ish ago, a new collegiate teammate of mine claimed to be best friends with Daniel Vogelbach and said that the Red Sox were interested him but Cubs management said no. I was skeptical because of the PTBNL rules with draft picks within a year of being drafted, but I don’t know the exact rules for the timing of PTBNL trades, so I couldn’t be sure.
If there is legitimacy to that, I suppose it would be someone a bit under Vogelbach’s value as a prospect.
