I suspect we've...

…made a high dollars/lower years offer. We’re trying to buy future near-term performance that is probably undervalued in a longer-term contract.

That's my guess.

The problem with the whole brinksmanship idea — that Theo is just getting involved to up the price — is that it could also up the price on Fielder and Pena.

If Albert gets $28 million, then Fielder should get $25 million and Pena should get $15 million, etc.

If we offer more or the same amount of money for a 7 year contract that the Marlins offer in ten year contract, Pujols definitely should take our deal. Not only does he receive the same income, but he also has the opportunity to sign another contract after the Cub’s contract finishes.

So it can't be true, because it's not what Theo "said" he wanted to do??

That means next to nothing. Unless Theo said, “in no way shape or form are we going to go after Albert Pujols – under any circumstances” then he reserves the right to DO whatever he wants to DO to move the Cubs forward. There’s no harm in making an offer to Albert, even if it’s just to drive up his price tag…

But my point is, Theo isn’t against making offers on players just to drive up the cost. Was Rivera really going to leave the Yankees for the Red Sox?!? That’s laughable at best. Is Pujols going to leave the Cardinals? I highly doubt it. But now that there are more offers out there, and the Cardinals would be nothing without him, they have to increase their bid.

I think we really need to remember that this front office is different than the last.

We’re not going to have a full on public viewing of what goes on behind closed doors until we have something official.
Theo knows how the business works, and while I hope I’m not putting too much faith in his abilities, I can’t help but wonder if all the rumours are simply writers guessing at what Theo and Co are doing, since they really have no clue at all.
I would love to have someone like Pujols on thee Cubs, but if it comes at the expense of mortgaging the future, I’m willing to pass.
I would also be skeptical of signing him to a long term contract unless we know the DH is coming to the NL.
But the most important thing to think about, is that they may be signing him right now, or they may not, either way, this front office knows how to go about things much more tight lipped than the previous.

I'm not in favor of signing Pujols for more than five years.

But I think the Cubs can afford him. After 2012 the big contracts, except Sori’s, are gone. Sure, we’ll have to pay Marmol, Soto, Marshall, Castro, etc., but there are very few payroll commitments after 2012. So a five year 25 (or even 30) million offer would actually make sense for the Cubs. Not sure Pujols would go for that but it cannot hurt to make that offer, can it? And a Pujols-less Cardinals and a Fielder-less Brewers and a Baker-led Cincinnati would make the division up for grabs, no?

Honestly, good move by the Marlins. I’d trust the Marlins management to collect all these large contracts now, hope to win the World Series in two years, and then dump the contracts via trades. It’s how their “fishy” management (lol!) has operated for nearly the past two decades (i.e. 1998 and 2003).

1) Pujols at 40 will be better than a lot of other options. He’s that talented and that dedicated.

3) Big boy teams spend money and say to hell with the years. We’re supposed to be a big boy team.

I’d give Pujols 12 years if he asked for it. If St. Louis is seriously going to fuck around with this guy, we need to swoop in.

Agreed

I really doubt we’ll see the same form of regression from Pujols we have from Soriano.
Although 12 years may be a bit much, we are looking at a player who is HoF caliber right now.
However, if he does cost the future to sign, I’d pass, but, as Worf stated, we are a big market team, if we can suffer through the decline phase of Soriano, Pujols, even in decline, will be a better hitter, and while I can’t personally speak for Soriano’s work ethic, Pujols plays a slightly less demanding position, and could last for a bit longer.

Rosenthal is reporting

that Pujols has accepted the money portion of the deal and is now asking for NTC for five years (at which point his 10/5 rights would kick back in, effectively giving him no-trade for life of deal)

They're certainly capable of doing it.

They’ve shown that. But let’s see what happens. Even if they get Albert, Reyes is a huge injury risk and their starting rotation has a number of question marks.

Fun in Miami, no State tax, great lineup hitting for you

Methinks they won’t have many problems attracting pitchers.

I don’t think the Marlins would be the favorite in 2012, but 2013-2015 will be beastly.

The eagles, heat

and phillies thought so too.

I think a ten year deal to Pujols is a franchise killer, particularly for a franchise like the marlins that is never going to be able to sustain a high payroll.

In 3 years, Pujols and Reyes would probably account for 60% if their payroll. You can’t win like that.

Pujols is not going to be worth his deal after about 4 years. He might not be able to play 100 games a season after 7. Given the size of our payroll by then, we might be able to hide it, but why? Signing a 32 year old Pujols for 10 years over signing a 27 year old fielder for 6 or so is a terrible baseball decision, imo.

Pujols will be better at 40 than Fielder at 35.

That would only be relevant if we gave Fielder an 8 year contract, which we won’t.

I don’t want Fielder past his 33-year season. Fielder for 5-6 years is just a better deal than any 32 year old for 10 years.

Just that Pujols asked

"It's all in the game, yo"

by Worf on Dec 6, 2011 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

It's also a safety valve.

They are putting a LOT of money into this team in the hopes that the new ballpark and a good lineup will build longterm interest of a kind that Miami has never shown for the Marlins. If that gamble fails, it’d be nice to know you can still offload the final 5 years and $100+ million on Pujols’ contract to someone else.

That's a decent policy.

I’d like to see the Cubs adopt something like that, even with the 10/5 in effect.

by MN exile on Dec 6, 2011 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

Gaby Sanchez

A few outlets (incl Paul Sullivan) are reporting that if the Marlins do sign Pujols, look for the Cubs to try and trade for Gaby Sanchez. I don’t know a ton about Sanchez, but it seems to me as though these are exactly the types of moves that the Cubs should be making at this point.

by dmlichte on Dec 6, 2011 12:07 PM CST reply actions

Sanchez would look very good in Cubs Blue

Not sure what Miami would want or if we even have players Miami would want, but that would be a great move for now and the future.

If the Marlins pull this off

I’ll be shocked. It’s crazy to imagine them suddenly deciding to spend wildly, even with the new stadium. I have to wonder if fan support will actually develop, or they’ll be trying to have another fire sale in 3-4 years.

by SouthernCub on Dec 6, 2011 1:00 PM CST reply actions

Maybe this is just the Miami market

They’d rather have white-hot great for a few years than consistent playoffs and they are willing to deal with down years — or more appropriately, willing to go to South Beach, Heat games, Dolphins games, Bimini — while the team has down years.

Can’t say I disagree at this point.

not if they have a World Series, they won't

And after 5 years, they’ll go to him and say, “We’re rebuilding, which teams would you waive your NTC for?” and Pujols isn’t going to sit around on a last-place team.

It’s called human beings and their desires. You don’t get that out of a computer.

This could be a very similar situation.
