Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers Preview, Monday 2/28, 2:05 CT: No Prince Today

Today is the Brewers' first spring training date and they've got a split-squad game; the other half of their team is playing the Giants at Milwaukee's home field at Maryvale. Thus, Prince Fielder stays home to play in that game and there aren't too many of the Milwaukee regulars coming to face the Cubs this afternoon.

Lineups for today:

Cubs:

CF Reed Johnson SS Darwin Barney RF Tyler Colvin LF Alfonso Soriano 1B Carlos Pena 2B Jeff Baker 3B Marquez Smith C Koyie Hill P Randy Wells

Brewers:

Carlos Gomez CF Craig Counsell SS Ryan Braun LF Mark Kotsay 1B Luis Cruz 2B Wil Nieves C Erick Almonte DH Caleb Gindl RF Zelous Wheeler 3B Tim Dillard RHP

And yes, that is correct. The Brewers will use the DH, the Cubs won't. In addition to Randy Wells, we'll see Kerry Wood, Andrew Cashner and Sean Marshall pitch today.

There's also a much nicer weather forecast today:

Today: Sunny, with a high near 66. East northeast wind between 3 and 6 mph.

The rest of the week, it's supposed to be in the 70s -- much better baseball weather.

Here's all the media information for today.

MLB.com Gameday for today's game

Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Please visit our SB Nation Brewers site Brew Crew Ball. As always, be careful over there.

There will be an overflow thread posting at 3:30 p.m. CST. As usual, the overflow thread will NOT post on the front page but will be in the "Recent Stories In Game Threads" box on the right sidebar (note, as of the time of this post, that box was not functioning. Keep watching for it, otherwise search the site for the overflow post). If you need an extra overflow thread beyond that one, post it in the FanShot section.

by RynoRooter on Feb 28, 2011 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

They're talking about him as the 7th inning guy

I’d rather seem him get 160ish innings in AAA. In 2012, he can replace Silva

by timh815 on Feb 28, 2011 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

Who said that?

I was under the impression that the organization had committed to Cashner starting.

by RynoRooter on Feb 28, 2011 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

I read somewhere that he will be in the pen

in Chicago if not in the rotation. I hope I’m (Colvin) wrong, but I want him to get innings in 2011.

by timh815 on Feb 28, 2011 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

Depending on how the other bullpen options do...

… you might be right. But Cashner, apart from two really bad outings, was a solid reliever. It would be nice to have that option with him.

Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago

by Al Yellon on Feb 28, 2011 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree

I don’t want to see Cashner in Chicago this summer unless it is as part of the rotation. Let him be relegated to the pen ONLY if he fails as a starter. Give someone like Caridad or Stevens more time to show their stuff in the pen. Is a minor impact on a fringe-playoff contending team worth losing what could be a whole year of development for Cashner as a starter? I answer that question with a resounding NO.

by RynoRooter on Feb 28, 2011 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

Caridad, maybe.

Stevens may wind up being released.

You may be right about Cashner being in the rotation, but is that worth having really bad pitchers in the bullpen?

Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago

by Al Yellon on Feb 28, 2011 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

For 2011?

Yes. Most certainly. To be completely honest, if you factor in the small amount of innings pitched, the downgrade from Cashner in the pen to someone like Stevens will make very little difference in total team performance. Neither would be pitching in either the 8th or 9th inning. Likely not the 7th, either.

by RynoRooter on Feb 28, 2011 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

Moreland's PBP

IMO he’s actually doing a fairly decent job for his relative inexperience. With some seasoning I could see Keith doing an inning or more per game of PBP, relegating Judd Sirott unnecessary. I wonder if the reason that Pat is chiming in is that the WGN folks are trying to see how the two would work with Keith doing some PBP with Pat doing Color.

by dmlichte on Feb 28, 2011 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I figured they're still ironing things out.

And of course, anything that deems Sirott unnecessary has my full, unequivocal support.

Really like Moreland

I recall liking him before when he filled in, but didn’t pay that much attention. Listening more critically to him now, I think he is going to be great…even on PBP. He has a very easy, informative style that is pleasant to listen to.

Once he gets the opposing players names down, I think Cubs fans will be well pleased with the new radio voice.

by azjazzman on Feb 28, 2011 3:45 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

Needs to work through the nerves, learn the players and names, and develop the timing with Pat, but I think he’ll be solid. We may have fun with the occasional words that he butchers, but hey, he isn’t exactly following the most eloquent color commentator.
