Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers Preview, Monday 2/28, 2:05 CT: No Prince Today
Today is the Brewers' first spring training date and they've got a split-squad game; the other half of their team is playing the Giants at Milwaukee's home field at Maryvale. Thus, Prince Fielder stays home to play in that game and there aren't too many of the Milwaukee regulars coming to face the Cubs this afternoon.
Lineups for today:
Cubs:
CF Reed Johnson SS Darwin Barney RF Tyler Colvin LF Alfonso Soriano 1B Carlos Pena 2B Jeff Baker 3B Marquez Smith C Koyie Hill P Randy Wells
Brewers:
Carlos Gomez CF Craig Counsell SS Ryan Braun LF Mark Kotsay 1B Luis Cruz 2B Wil Nieves C Erick Almonte DH Caleb Gindl RF Zelous Wheeler 3B Tim Dillard RHP
And yes, that is correct. The Brewers will use the DH, the Cubs won't. In addition to Randy Wells, we'll see Kerry Wood, Andrew Cashner and Sean Marshall pitch today.
There's also a much nicer weather forecast today:
Today: Sunny, with a high near 66. East northeast wind between 3 and 6 mph.
The rest of the week, it's supposed to be in the 70s -- much better baseball weather.
Here's all the media information for today.
MLB.com Gameday for today's game
Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.
Please visit our SB Nation Brewers site Brew Crew Ball. As always, be careful over there.
There will be an overflow thread posting at 3:30 p.m. CST. As usual, the overflow thread will NOT post on the front page but will be in the "Recent Stories In Game Threads" box on the right sidebar (note, as of the time of this post, that box was not functioning. Keep watching for it, otherwise search the site for the overflow post). If you need an extra overflow thread beyond that one, post it in the FanShot section.

Cashner should start in Iowa
I don’t think I’m ready for him in high-leverage situations
Let's see more than just one outing before we make that judgment.
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago

He’d better not make a habit of that

I must have missed that
If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
5th starter
isn’t exactly high-leverage, which is where I want to see him.
They're talking about him as the 7th inning guy
I’d rather seem him get 160ish innings in AAA. In 2012, he can replace Silva
Who said that?
I was under the impression that the organization had committed to Cashner starting.
I read somewhere that he will be in the pen
in Chicago if not in the rotation. I hope I’m (Colvin) wrong, but I want him to get innings in 2011.
Depending on how the other bullpen options do...
… you might be right. But Cashner, apart from two really bad outings, was a solid reliever. It would be nice to have that option with him.
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago
I disagree
I don’t want to see Cashner in Chicago this summer unless it is as part of the rotation. Let him be relegated to the pen ONLY if he fails as a starter. Give someone like Caridad or Stevens more time to show their stuff in the pen. Is a minor impact on a fringe-playoff contending team worth losing what could be a whole year of development for Cashner as a starter? I answer that question with a resounding NO.
Caridad, maybe.
Stevens may wind up being released.
You may be right about Cashner being in the rotation, but is that worth having really bad pitchers in the bullpen?
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago
For 2011?
Yes. Most certainly. To be completely honest, if you factor in the small amount of innings pitched, the downgrade from Cashner in the pen to someone like Stevens will make very little difference in total team performance. Neither would be pitching in either the 8th or 9th inning. Likely not the 7th, either.
Bit early for that.

Moreland's PBP
IMO he’s actually doing a fairly decent job for his relative inexperience. With some seasoning I could see Keith doing an inning or more per game of PBP, relegating Judd Sirott unnecessary. I wonder if the reason that Pat is chiming in is that the WGN folks are trying to see how the two would work with Keith doing some PBP with Pat doing Color.
Yeah, I figured they're still ironing things out.
And of course, anything that deems Sirott unnecessary has my full, unequivocal support.
"I'm not a broadcaster! I'm me!"--Ron Santo
Really like Moreland
I recall liking him before when he filled in, but didn’t pay that much attention. Listening more critically to him now, I think he is going to be great…even on PBP. He has a very easy, informative style that is pleasant to listen to.
Once he gets the opposing players names down, I think Cubs fans will be well pleased with the new radio voice.
Agreed
Needs to work through the nerves, learn the players and names, and develop the timing with Pat, but I think he’ll be solid. We may have fun with the occasional words that he butchers, but hey, he isn’t exactly following the most eloquent color commentator.

Whoever is posting game data
for Gameday for this particular game, should be looking for a job! I dropped in on the SD-SEA game, and it is radically different with pitch trajectories and up to date info. this game-not so much is an understatement!
"I lof to hit de home ron!"
Have to be up at 5 AM, so good night everybody.
If the Cubs still have a chance, no matter how small, it’s still Go Cubs, damn the math and pass the KoolAid.
Sori
With a 2-out double.
"It's a funny old world. Man's lucky if he gets out of it alive." W.C. Fields
The person working on gameday just doesn't care anymore
"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." John Lennon
"My favorite food is Macaroni and Cheese, from the blue box." Geovany Soto
Maybe they fired
the lazy so and so.

"It's a funny old world. Man's lucky if he gets out of it alive." W.C. Fields

I think Mana Mana
Would be a great song to go into when the pitcher gets pulled mid-inning
Over at Baseball Prospectus
they just noted that replacing the good-hitting-for-a-pitcher Adam Wainwright’s ABs with that of a normal awful hitting pitcher might cost the Cardinals another four runs. Or one more win.
Unfortunately
that would require kidnapping John Mozeliak’s family.
That might even be a felony.

The Giants have one
She bugs me. I’d like to hear one that doesn’t bug me.

I like her very much
She is very popular in SF.
You are definitely in the minority,

I might be
She just has this fake enthusiasm that I don’t like. But that’s just me.
If Giant fans like her, more power to her.

I've been missing out big time.
I’ve never listened to the cubs on the radio before (having always scraped together what games I could glimpse on p2p streaming sites and the like) but this season I treated myself to a full MLB.tv sub.
I have to say, Pat Hughes is aural chocolate!

"It's a funny old world. Man's lucky if he gets out of it alive." W.C. Fields
How bad does Hill have to play to not make the team?
Or how good does Castillo and Ramirez have to be?
Small chance
Probably have to be an injury somewhere.

Gameday
is surely screwing up. It says Carpenter walked the first guy on 4 pitches and struck the next guy out on 3. Can anybody tell me how many pitches he is actually throwing?
I'm not counting, but he is
missing the corners
It's weird seeing "Dykstra" up there without remembering a dude with a softball sized wad of Chew in his cheek.

A lovely story:
One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....
But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day.
The end
