Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

According to their team website (link in title above), the Tampa Rays currently have 42 players on their "40" man roster.

42! The Cubs only had 41 for all those weeks. How in the world are the Rays getting away with 42?

Oh the horror! The pain! The tragedy!

Given the locale, I can only imagine that somehow Sweet Lou is behind this. From the comfort of his fishing boat, again he reaches out and taunts our very own Doggie...

Perhaps it's not too late

Maybe the Damon deal isn’t official yet. Maybe we can swoop in and steal him away from the Rays. He could be the missing piece in our three-man left-handed RF platoon….

But it's official!

Why isn’t Selig investigating this?

I do NOT want to talk about this

They have to get down to 40 and somebody is on that bubble that I don’t even want to think about.

Maybe.

But why trade for a guy (and I surely realize the trade wasn’t for him) you are then going to DFA him before ST even starts?

I would think Fuld is at least safe to make it to ST.

No he is not safe

However if he clears waivers they can send him to Durham and if he gets claimed than he finally finds a team that wants him.

No he is not safe

On what basis do you know this?

the fact that he's NEVER been "safe" on the roster

would make it common sense.

Not correct.

Fuld was on the 40-man roster almost all of the last three seasons.

All I meant

is that he is probably “safe” for this “rostergate” situation. Surely they’ll have to be down to 40 by the time camp opens so that they can then release their NRI list.

I would not think the Rays would have taken him in the trade if they were going to designate him before taking his first wind sprint.

Is he “safe” to stick on the 40 past that? No.

You’d think one of the catchers would be dropped. Many on BCB were scratching their heads when the Cubs had 4 on the 40 man… the Rays have 5.

To both of you, no he is not "safe"

Rays have signed a bunch of players since he arrived and he is on the bubble. How do I know this Al? Well by obsessively reading Tampa Bay Rays news of course. I would say his chances are a bit better than 50/50, but certainly not safe. Ironically it may end up being between him and Guyer though the Rays have a lot of options. Like any team they will try to calculate who they can put on waivers who won’t get claimed. Did not work for the Cubs with Schlitter so you never know.

Guyer may have options left.

Some of the other guys on that 40-man may also have options. So, who knows what will really happen? It’s clear to me that with Damon and Manny signed, they will need an experienced outfielder who can play late-inning defense and pinch-run. Sounds like a perfect spot for Fuld.

Regardless of options

Two guys will have to get removed from the 40 man and thus be exposed to other teams.

Guyer certainly has options left, but he does have to be protected on the 40 man.
