If he could be had for something like 5/150 with options and vesting years, that would be phenomenal & I’d be all for it.

10 years guaranteed, no thanks.

How about 5/150

+ 30 Mil per World Series Appearance.

I'm just throwin' that

out there. I still wanna know if the CBA lapsing will lead to un-reimbursed FA signings.

by timh815 on Feb 8, 2011 5:39 PM CST up reply actions

I looked it up

According to MLB.com, the CBA expires on December 11, 2011.

Under what reasoning would any free agent be worth any compensation on December 12th?

by timh815 on Feb 8, 2011 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

i'd go up to eight years

30 per. or 5 years, 35 per. no way 5 years 150 gets it done, even with option years and incentives, etc. this would be a game changer. overpay for it. way overpay for it.

by John T. Unger on Feb 8, 2011 5:46 PM CST reply actions

8 guaranteed at 30 per is insane

sadly, someone will probably pay it. The Angels perhaps?

If he gets us a pennant

How many T-Shirts and DVDs would that sell? How many millions would the Cubs receive in profit? I’m just sayin’.

The Angels

Wouldn’t outbid the Rangers for Adrian Beltre or the Red Sox for Carl Crawford. What makes anyone think that Arte Moreno is ready to empty the truck for Pujols?

The Angels are very good at giving big contracts to the Torii Hunters of the world. They only got Guererro because talks with the Dodgers fell apart and no one else was willing to give Vlad a big contract because he was coming off a back injury.

The Angels might change their tune for Pujols, but they’ve haven’t given any indication that they will. Every indication is that Arte Moreno makes a fair offer and gets beat when someone else goes that extra year and few million dollars and Moreno refuses to increase his offer.

I consider

Theriot——→Castro like Morales -——>Pujols

by timh815 on Feb 8, 2011 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

Not really

Morales was an elite first baseman in 2009, and looked like he would continue that in 2010 before that freak injury. Theriot was never more than a league average player at his position, and that was only one year(‘08). And I’m a huge Starlin fan, but he is nowhere near the caliber of Pujols. The Angels would probably be wise to invest that 30 mil/year in other needs since they already have an all star caliber first baseman.

it's all insane

you just have to pick the right times to get slightly more insane. thus far, hendry hasn’t been good at recognizing when to get insane.

Pujols is a great player...

…but I have a feeling he may be more injury prone as the years move on for him. Even with that, he is worth a boatload of dough and someone will give him just that.

Giving him 10 years is overkill IMO, but he just may get it.

So, would you rather have...

Konerko (34) for 5 years and $70 million $14 million/year), or Pujols (31) for 5 years and $150 million ($30 million/year)

by DisCUBbobulated on Feb 8, 2011 8:06 PM CST reply actions

Pujols

and it’s not even close.

by Josh Timmers on Feb 9, 2011 12:32 AM CST up reply actions

if he hits free agency

The cubs should do everything they can do get him. He would most likely make the cubs a playoff team for the next 5 years, and sell millions of tickets. Financially he is a perfect fit for the cubs. There a 4th place team without him, and a playoff team with him. He will pay most of his salary by just being on the team. If the cubs were a 1st or last place team he might not be worth it.

by Notsnud on Feb 8, 2011 8:26 PM CST reply actions

If you want to compare

use Arod. I cant stand him, but he IS good. he is 4-5 yrs older and had a few injury issues the last few years, but when he comes to the plate he still is a threat every time. This is what Albert brings to you. We almost had that feeling with Rami a couple of years ago, but he is what happens when you cant stay healthy. Albert plays 1st which is not the most injury prone position.
He is worth the $, but not for 10 yrs. As someone said earlier, if the Cubs won it all, they couldnt make enough WS stuff. Wrigley would stay filled for a while.

and either way

St. Louis will have issues going forward.

by timh815 on Feb 9, 2011 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah i truly believe if he hits the FA market...

…he isn’t going back to STL. And no matter where he goes, that’s good news for the Cubs. Plus I think if he leaves, TLR is also a goner.

There's less than a week

until Pujols’ declared deadline. I’m with Heyman—there is almost no way the Cardinals come to agreement with Pujols by then.

If Pujols decides to give an extension, that’s another thing. But they aren’t coming to agreement by the start of camp.

It’s all speculation, but pretty much everyone thinks we are either the favorites or one of the favorites to sign him if he does walk.

But it’s all speculation, I must remind myself.

by Josh Timmers on Feb 10, 2011 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

Josh, if we sign Albert Pujols to a contract to play baseball for us next year...

I will buy you you’re very own Pujols Cubs Jersey and send it to you gift-wrapped with a personal handwritten note written on a $50 bill.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Feb 10, 2011 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

Does anyone think this deadline truly means anything?

And why do people think if he becomes a FA he won’t sign with St, Louis? This all seems like a story driven by facts that could easily change,

And why would Pujols sign with the Cubs? So he can become the next Soriano?

My guess is he’ll be willing to settle for less to play in St, Louis and the Cardinals know it but Pujols doesn’t yet,
