Albert Pujols in cubbie blue
Lets say that the red birds dont get a deal done with there slugger before spring training and he hits free agency next fall, are cub fans hoping he comes to Chicago? Do they really want to cripple there salery for the next 10 years at proly around 30 million per.... Can he really hit into his 40s, would this really help the team in the long hall. Personaly I would rather spend there money on a top of the rotation starter or two or three

What are you talking about?
The poster proly has a pretty firm grasp of the English language. There understanding that there is only one form of ‘there’ is clearly accurate. There right, and you’re wrong.

Dream all you want but it won't happen
Even in the outrageous circumstance the RedBirds don’t re-sign him, no way is Tommy-Boy isn’t going down another Soriano (x2, in dollars) road.
10 years?! Let’s see who’s stupid enough to do that. He’s 31, his decline will begin in 4-5 years. The last 2-3 will be brutal. In the 0.1PPM chance this will happen for the Cubs, I’d rather see something like 6yrs for $210M.
Just win the next game...!
I want to know if this is the "proly" he's talking about.

I remember when the original Donkey Kong came out thinking that Mario looked
an awful lot like Mike Proly. Quite a strange stat like for Proly in 1980 with the White Sox. Threw 146 innings, and only started three games for a total of 16 innings. That’s a lot of innings of relieving.
And there’s my random thoughts for the day.
"Enough foreplay- let's get crackin'"- Fred Garvin
Wow, that is crazy.
My only guess is the Sox must have had a lot of starters get lit up early in games that season. And he does look like Mario!

130 Innings In Relief
That’s something for a guy who only had 8 saves in 1980. Mike Marshall pitched 140.2 innings in relief just the season before in 1979 with the Twins, but Marshall was one of the best relievers in the American League then with 32 saves.
2011 - The 103rd time is the charm.
Remember...
… in 1980, bullpens weren’t used the way they are now. Many teams had “long relievers” who would pitch multiple innings in games. Looking at his game logs, there were multiple games he threw more than four relief innings. In that era, with the DH relatively new and thus no pinch hitters needed, managers would often let relievers throw multiple innings if they were going OK, rather than reflexively take them out after two innings.
I wish modern managers would try that.
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago
Ron Davis in 1980
Ron Davis threw 131 innings in 53 appearances with the Yankees in 1980. There were six games in which he pitched 4 or more innings in relief. Think of all the relievers that never ever pitch as many as 4 innings in an outing in their entire careers. Davis did it 6 times in one season.
2011 - The 103rd time is the charm.
Dick Tidrow did the same thing in 1980.
He made 84 appearances — which is still the team record (tied by Bob Howry in 2006) — and threw 116 innings. He was one of the better relievers in the NL on a really bad team. Davis, OTOH, was on a very good team. It was just the way bullpens were used in those days.

I don’t know why reading the bad grammar is so funny. It’s “proly” because of how everybody is picking it apart so well.

The good old days
I really miss the days when major league players mostly looked like guys on your dad’s bowling team.
im
sure pullhose will not be on the cubs. Oh by the way their is a player with a nik name on the cubs named spellcheck. i suggest you look iinto it
Is it April yet?
And...
by “long hall” you mean the tunnel from the clubhouse to the dugout?
Personally, I can't wait for the Cards to finally sign him...
…which they inevitably will…if only to stop the ridiculous pipe dream that he would somehow end up in Chicago.
There are so many reasons why that’s NEVER going to happen that I’m not even going to waste time going into them.
Bottom line is that the Cards will find some way to get Albert settle on 7-8 years at a mind numbing sum and we’ll all be able to all get on with our lives.
Please, go into them because I can't think of many reasons Pujols wouldn't want to play for the Cubs
especially if they meet his contract demands, which is the most important reason why any FA player signs a contract with any team, second being the quality of the team said FA would sign with…
There's only ONE reason...
The New York Yankees.
"I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die." - Anonymous
Right now...
…I tend to agree with you that he may very well end up signing with the Cards.
If he doesn’t and he wants 8-10 years at the dollars that have been thrown around, you can’t make that deal if you are the Cubs.
If this was basketball (where one player makes a boatload of difference), I would say fine, but one player (no matter how good) just doesn’t make that much difference on the baseball field.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Why I don't want Pujols
Let’s just say the Cubs sign him somehow and the Cubs win it all with Pujols. That would be great but the title would feel like a product of the Cardinals. Then everytime the topic gets brought up, not only Cardinals fans but other critics would argue: “yeah you won it all just because of Pujols.” They would say it like Pujols himself is the entire team, and no one man is ever the entire… oh wait: “I’m taking my talents to…” I guess there is an exception.
Imagine that, Pujols doesn’t get signed, he dicides to go somewhere else, SportsCenter creates the Pujols version of “The Decision”, and Pujols goes on the air and says: “I’m taking my talents to Chicago’s Northside.” Talk about drama, something the Cubs probably “proly” don’t need.
At this stage, most Cubs fans want to see a title on the Northside by any means possible. But for me, I would like to see the Cubs give their critics as many reasons possible to keep them from saying: “yeah the Cubs won it all just because of [ reasons stated here ].” But, that’s just the way it is, critics are critics, they’ll inevitably find excuses, because that’s there they’re their job. With that said, David Kaplan I’m looking at you! Don’t make me send Paul Sullivan over their there. (Laughs)
If Pujols and the Cardinals go their separate ways, hopefully he signs with an American League team so the Cubs don’t have to oppose him anymore. Okay i’ll admit it, there’s a small part of me that takes liking on the idea of Pujols in a Cubs uniform, but not a lot. Everything aside, the Cubs have already signed their new first baseman for 2011, so now I’m satisfied, amen.

Ok first off...
Nothing I have ever heard about Albert says he’s classless enough to pull a LeBum and even entertain the idea of a Sports Center special on his FA decision.
I’ve noticed an alarming consistency that nearly all FA’s are derided as too old, approaching too old or no where near as good as their numbers make them out to be.
Now back to my response…
If by some minor miracle the Rickettes family and Cubs management found the cash to make a serious offer to Albert Pujols and he agrees to come to Chicago, I’d not be worried about what some knucklehead Cards fan might say if and when we won the WS with Big Albert at 1st. They lost him we have him and honestly without Albert they are an also ran in the league.

Who is on first? What are you asking me for? I'm not asking you I'm telling you who is on first. I'm asking you who's on first? That's the man's name.
I was kidding about the SportsCenter thing. I was just doing it for laughs. I just wanted to tie in a dramatization paragraph with the end of my first paragraph.
I’d not be worried about what some knucklehead Cards fan might say if and when we won the WS with Big Albert at 1st.I never said just one “knucklehead Cards fan” I said:
not only Cardinals fans but other critics would argue: "yeah you won it all just because of Pujols."
I was not only referencing the whole Cardinals fan base itself creating a fictitious stereotype, but also critics. Maybe I should have revised my comment before posting by defining what I meant by “other critics”, so I’ll do it here. By “other critics” I meant people in general that you run into everyday. The type of people that pick up on any old stereotype and keep rehearsing it… and there’s plenty of them out there.
Also, in regards to “other critics”, I would like to reference sports journalists that have regular columns in newspapers, magazines, internet, etc. Also journalists that make regular television / radio appearances. I’m not saying they’re going to say: “The Cubs won just because of Pujols.” But I imagine some would imply the stereotype. But then again, all this stuff is just what I think would happen if “all the cosmic tumblers clicked into place and the universe opened itself up for a few seconds to show you what’s possible.” : )
Ever watch the Field of Dreams? OMG! I’m from the sixties! Out! Go back to where I came from! There’s no place for me here in the future! I should get back while I still can! (laughs)
About the Cardinals fans, it just always seems like they go way out of their way to remind Cubs fans about our team’s history compared to their team’s history. So I imagine, since they already do it in the first place, they would continue do it by evoking the stereotype we’ve been discussing. They would probably just make t-shirts or bring a million laminated signs per fan as reminders.
In fact, now that I’ve ranted so long about this stereotype, I think I’ve changed my view point on this whole “stereotype” thing. I think I would enjoy seeing Cardinals fans go out of their way to create a stereotype while we celebrate a world series title. Ha! I’m glad I came to that. I guess my admission in my initial comment:
Okay i’ll admit it, there’s a small part of me that takes liking on the idea of Pujols in a Cubs uniform, but not a lot.was trying to tell me something.
BTW, I couldn’t really understand the last sentence in your response. Can you elaborate on it for me?

One year deal for Pena..
The Cubs are considering Pujols.. I hope they don’t do it, though, at these prices. I also think the Cards are seriously considering releasing him if he wants 10/300, and think that would be the right decision.
He'd probably hit around 100 home runs against Triple A pitching.

Note to “goodold#10”: I really hate it when bloggers make errors in spelling and use the wrong word. You really come off less intelligent than I hope you are. An occasional ‘typo’ is fine…I understand that, but saying things like “….and don’t get THERE slugger….” Uh, it’s THEIR, not “THERE”, is really unacceptable. Also way too many words spelled incorrectly. Maybe someone should work on THEIR english and grammar before trying to pass themselves off as a ‘blogger’?
As for Pujols coming to the Windy City, I highly doubt it. In fact, I’m against it. We just signed Pena and I’m good with that deal. He’s still young and has several years ahead of him. Pujols will only be around for 3 or so more years and then he’ll go to the American League and become a DH. Carlos Pena….he’s MY guy at first.
I take it you understood him tho, right?
Who cares if it’s there, their or they’re? This is a baseball blog, NOT an entrance exam to MIT.

Let me put it this way
People take posts more seriously when it looks like the poster have a decent understanding of the english language.
?????????
You would rather have Carlos Pena than Albert Pujols at first?? The Carlos Pena that is a year older than Pujols? The career .241 hitter Pena? The career 12 wins above replacement (as oposed to 84 for Albert) Pena? The -5 defensive wins above replacement Pena? Only 3 more years for Albert???? Really? Jeff Bagwell played into his late 30’s Why don’t you think that is a possibility for Pujols?
"Trade me right fucking now!"
If Pujols is the answer, how come the Cardinals haven't won every year?
and to the OP, use proper grammar and words. Spellcheck, grammar check, they’re/their/there, salery. I could go on but everybody has had a field day with the grammar and spelling anyway.
By all that's holy, I am going to attend the 2012 Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp.
This is a tad unfair
don’t you think? By this logic, NO player is the answer because no team has won it every year. And I guess the Phillies were crazy for getting Roy Halladay, he’d never even been to the post-season!

Just FYI
According to mlbtraderumors.com this nugget is in Buster Olney’s latest blog (which I can’t access because it’s an Insider story):
•Both the Mets and Dodgers have been mentioned as hypothetical landing spots for Albert Pujols, who will hit free agency if he doesn’t sign an extension by the time Spring Training starts. One rival executive suggested to Olney that the Cubs could become the top bidder for Pujols if he hits the open market. “I think their ownership is gearing up for that,” the executive said.

Even if it’s an A-Rod type contract, we are talking about the greatest righthanded hitter in the history of baseball. Would I like the second half of his career with the Cubs? Absolutely.

The market is going to be interesting....
Because the top spenders already have big dollars committed to 1st base: Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies. That leaves the Dodgers, Cubs, and Mets at the top of the bidding.

I cant believe what I am reading?!!!!!
Why would you not want the best player in the game????
First of all, the cubs have $39.1mil comming off of the books at the end of the year in Fukodome, Pena, and Ramirez so paying his contract at $30 mil/yr would not increase payrol if you can find a 3rd baseman for around $9mil (untill Vitters is ready) which is very doable. He is #1 in MLB in wins over replacement 6 years in a row. He plays a position which is not prone to injury, for all of you who want to bring up Soriano and his injuries. He is a 2 time gold glove winner which would shore up a shaky defense. And, for all of you who are so worried what Cardinal fans would say if we won with Pujols, you show them your World Series banner and tell them where to shove their shiny little signs. And, just because he is asking for 10 years does not mean he is going to get it. I see him getting 8 years which puts him at retiring at 40. If that gets us 2 or 3 World Series, I would say it is well worth it!
"Trade me right fucking now!"
It would only take one for it to be worth it.

It should be interesting how he performs in at his age and in a contract year
His numbers last year were still amazing but his WAR dropped from 9.2 in 2009 to 7.2 in 2010. The only person we can compare him to in terms of hitting and contract was Arod and his 31, 32, 33, 34 seasons WAR were 9.9, 5.4, 3.9, and 2.9.
So im not sure if i would commit to 8 years. Id say 6 years with more slightly more per year.
It should be interesting to see how he plays in a contract year.
as good as
pujols is will anyone want him when he is 41? i can only see the cards giving him a 10 year. i cant imagine the cubs wanting to pay anyone 30 mill a year.
This whole thing is a win-win for us...
It has already started to become over the top with new columns being written every single day about him. The black cloud over Busch stadium is getting bigger by the minute. The Cardinals know the possibilities. If they come anywhere close to his demands, their hands are bound for many many years If they don’t they will never live it down. If he does somehow sign with us, that team and it’s fanbase will go up in flames for a long long time.
They are gonna have to hear about the Pujols’ contract before every game and after every game and between games and during games.
Reality is
That he’ll go into this offseason without a contract to show the Cardinals that he means business. He’ll talk with clubs like the Angels and Cubs to drive up the price. He doesn’t have the luxury of a bidding war right now with one team involved. There will be “rumors” that he’s leaning one way or another, but when it all comes down to it, he’ll end up re-signing with the Cardinals for the biggest contract in history and follow it with a press conference saying that he always wanted to retire as a Cardinal.
I also don’t have any confidence that we’d spend money on a game changer like him. I think we’ve gone back to the bean-counting, bid just enough to look like we were serious, hold no one responsible for dumb decisions, lowering payroll days of Cubs management.
Let’s face it. He has too many roots there, he’s a legend there, his family is established there, and it would be a public relations disaster if he went anywhere else, especially to the Cubs (which would upset his current Cardinal fans even more). We can speculate about it and wish all we want to, but he’ll end up right back with the Cardinals when everything is all said and done.
