Looks like AT&T is implementing a data cap for both DSL and U-Verse customer. If you have MLB.TV, I bet you'll be affected.

Personally, I think it's pretty crappy of a company to sell you something they tell you is unlimited and then impose a limit after they have hooked you as a customer.

In reading this...

… I think it applies to people who are streaming movies, not MLB.TV. If you are an AT&T DSL subscriber, though, you should check with them.

What gave you that impression?

Also, does anyone have any idea how much data is used to stream a 3 hour MLB game in HD through MLB.TV?

I don't know what it takes to stream a 3 hour MLB game.

It’s just an impression I have that they are trying to limit the amount of movie streaming downloads. If anyone knows how much data is used for MLB.TV streaming, post it here.

I would imagine a 3 hour game

would be very comparable to a 3 hour movie…

Just another reason to speed up the game!

Can't give an accurate figure

I usually never use the NexDef plug-in as it has always led to more glitches and lag than it is worth to me (plus it didn’t work on Win7 x64 systems last year). Still, I did track my Internet usage for a while two years ago when AT&T then threatened to introduce usage caps (during the Reno, NV and Beaumont, TX trial runs). Even when using MLB.TV almost daily for Cubs games at the max non-NexDef bitrate and doing my other normal Internet tasks, I rarely went over 60GB of downloading per month. Since I have WGN America access now, my MLB.TV usage is reduced, so I am not expecting any cap issues immediately. That does not mean I will take this policy change lightly, but with Charter having a similar cap, there is not much I can do about it currently.

Once I get signed up for MLB.TV this year (waiting to see if any discounts appear) and high bitrate games are transmitted again (may not until the season starts), I will track the average download usage for a game stream. I expect that if you heavily use Netflix, Vudu, or other services like that along with MLB.TV, you might go over your cap limit (especially with the lower cap for DSL usage). Most normal users should be fine for the short term.

Not that I fully trust this...

…but one of the MLBAM support drones stated recently that an HD full game stream will send roughly 4GB of data to your computer. Therefore, 1 game a day would lead to about 120GB downloaded per month. AT&T DSL users may need to avoid the NexDef plugin this year or just turn down the video quality a notch.

It's a monthly data cap.

It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, it counts toward the cap.

WTF

The only reason I have ATT DSL is because there is no cap.

I think this is the way

data companies are headed – supposedly we are approaching the limit as to what our networks will carry for bandwith

in 6 months they will offer a more expensive unlimited package to go with limited packages…

I'm sure your premise is correct.

Most of the tech blogs today disagree rather vehemently with the idea that ATT’s DSL network is experiencing any level of congestion, and note that since DSL is a direct line from each enduser to a central location, the only place congestion becomes an issue is within the provider’s systems, and the provider could increase their capacity relatively inexpensively.

ya

that could be, I am basing what I said off of some news reports I have seen and am far from an expert in the field…
