Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies and Oakland Athletics, Tuesday 3/15, 3:05 CT: Split Squad Finale
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- This game preview post was going to be about the Cubs' roster cuts, which I figured would happen after today's split-squad games.
Instead, the Cubs announced 18 roster cuts this morning -- none of which is any real surprise -- and you can read about them in the post below this one.
That said, there really isn't any other "game preview" news to report, other than today's starting pitchers and lineups, so here goes.
Today, Randy Wells will start in Mesa against the Rockies' Esmil Rogers, who is competing for Colorado's fifth starter slot. Other Rockies expected to throw are Matt Belisle, Matt Lindstrom and Huston Street. In the game vs. the Athletics in Phoenix, Andrew Cashner gets the start against Oakland's Brett Anderson.
Cubs lineup in Mesa:

There will be an overflow thread posting at 4:30 p.m. CDT (one overflow for both games). As usual, the overflow thread will NOT post on the front page but will be in the "Recent Stories In Game Threads" box on the right sidebar. If you need an extra overflow thread beyond that one, post it in the FanShot section.

but is he waxing
That is the truer test for a catcher…..wax in wax off and no streaks!

Actually, he's waning.

Catchers
I find it amusing (no) that M. Ramirez is batting 5th in one game, while Soto languishes at 7th in the other.
In the event that Byrd rides another hot streak to start the season, what do you think about him at leadoff? That energy level would look good starting the lineup, and if he can keep his OBP around .350, that would work for me.
Revised 2011 lineup: Byrd/Castro/Soto/Ramirez/Pena/Soriano/Colvin(Fukudome)/Baker(Dewitt)
I actually don't mind that lineup if Byrd hits well enough.
But I doubt we’ll ever see it, especially the part where Soto hits 7th.
He can't hit higher than 7th because he's too slow and could never go first to third!
That’s why we have Aramis hitting fourth!!!!
Personally
Byrd has a lot of value out of the lead off spot, I just wonder if the league has caught up to him. He hit fairly poorly in the second half last year. It depends on what his adjustment is again this year. It looked like he cut down his swing last year which was great, I would like a little bit more patience from him, but his eye isn’t horrible.
I like Fuku batting higher in the order against righties, maybe even at the 1. Unfortunately it comes at the cost of playing time for Tyler Colvin.
The lineup is a mess unfortunately, and its going to take a few career years for the Cubs to be competitive…
"What do you think, I just dunked my whole career?" Jordan asked Henderson after making a 3.
"You’ve got to miss eventually," Henderson told him.
"That’s what Cleveland said," replied Jordan
Well, the line-ups show
that roster cuts are nothing more than a formality… as a couple of guys who were cut this morning are still lining up in today’s SS games.
I know clubs will “borrow” guys from the minor league camp here and there, but to echo Al’s sentiments, the timing of the roster cuts seems rather peculiar to me (why not just announce after the game).
Is it possible the cuts are something of a matter of bookkeeping… with today being the last day before the 2nd half of March? Perhaps something with how much players are owed for time in camp?

I believe the difference is the amt of meal $$ players get.
In major league camp they get much more $$ than in minor league for per diem.
Otherwise, players don’t get paid during spring training.

Todd Helton is 37?
That’s old in baseball years. No wonder he’s physically falling apart.
Baseball is back!!
Remember when he hit like .373 with around 40 homers?
yeah…

Cashner starts a little shaky with a BB and a couple hits..
but lots of ground balls – always like to see that for future cubs pitchers.
