I thought the Cubs would wait until after today's games -- with tomorrow being an off day -- to announce roster cuts, but instead, they made 18 cuts this morning. Here they are:
Right-handed pitchers Robert Coello and Thomas Diamond were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitchers Alberto Cabrera, Rafael Dolis and Kyle Smit were optioned to Double-A Tennessee.
13 non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: right-handed pitchers Chris Carpenter, Jay Jackson and Trey McNutt; left-handed pitcher Scott Rice; catchers Steve Clevenger and Chris Robinson; infielders Bryan LaHair, Marquez Smith and Josh Vitters; and outfielders Jim Adduci, Brett Jackson, Lou Montanez and Brad Snyder.
None of these should be a surprise at all -- few if any of these players had any chance of making the team, although several of them are prospects for future seasons or possibilities for injury replacement later this season. Some of them are playing in today's games. This leaves the spring roster at 40: 20 pitchers (three non-roster invitees), four catchers, 10 infielders (four non-roster invitees) and six outfielders (one non-roster invitee).
