Chicago Cubs vs. Los Angeles Angels Preview, Monday 3/21, 3:05 CT: Rain Threatens
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- It's cloudy and windy this morning in the Phoenix area and the weather forecast for today's game doesn't look good:
Today: Showers, mainly after 11am. High near 65. Windy, with a west southwest wind 22 to 25 mph decreasing to between 14 and 17 mph. Winds could gust as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
If there's a cancellation, this thread will turn into Rainout Theater; I probably won't bother with the overflow thread in that case.
So this afternoon, weather permitting, Andrew Cashner will start against the Angels in Tempe. Justin Berg, Jeff Samardzija, Scott Maine and Jeff Stevens are on the list to throw in the Tempe game. Jered Weaver was supposed to start for the Angels, but this Victor Rojas tweet indicates Weaver threw in a minor league game this morning, so I have no idea who's actually going to start, if this game is even played. Other Angels scheduled to pitch this afternoon are Kevin Jepsen, (the other) Francisco Rodriguez and Jason Bulger. Kerry Wood and James Russell will be throwing this afternoon in minor league games at Fitch Park. Complete lineups after the jump.
Cubs lineup:
RF Fukudome
SS Castro
CF Byrd
1B Pena
C Soto
LF Soriano
3B Baker
2B Barney
P Cashner
Aramis Ramirez was supposed to be in the lineup today, but he's still home sick. Also, more playing time for Darwin Barney. Could it be.... ?
Angels lineup:
Aybar SS
Kendrick 2B
Abreu DH
Hunter RF
Wells LF
Callaspo 3B
Trumbo 1B
Mathis C
Bourjos CF

Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today. Today's game will be televised on the MLB Network and will be on MLB.com with Len Kasper and Mick Gillispie.
Please visit our SB Nation Angels site Halos Heaven..
There will be an overflow thread posting at 4:30 p.m. CDT (this time, I won't forget, like I did yesterday; but it will only post if the game is actually being played). As usual, the overflow thread will NOT post on the front page but will be in the "Recent Stories In Game Threads" box on the right sidebar. If you need an extra overflow thread beyond that one, post it in the FanShot section.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I like this lineup, it would clearly be better within a ram in it
But it seems to be constructed with some thought. I love seeing Darwin Barney playing. I went to college at osu when he was on the team. He’s a winner, and won’t just go threw the motions. He’s got jeter like instincts on the field. 100% baseball 0% bullshit.
Be thankful it's only rain.
We’re getting more snow here, forecast 3-5 inches. Someone please either kill me or warp me to late April.
I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Seriously,

Love this lineup.
Here’s hoping that Baker roughs up some right-handers today. It would make things a lot simpler.
Same goes for you, Darwin!

Oh, it's going to rain...
It is just a question of when and how much. We live 60 miles east of LA and all day long the news was talking about the storm and how bad it was and how much rain LA was getting. Meanwhile, we hadn’t gotten a drop until about 6:30 p.m. when the heavens opened up for about eight straight hours.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

I'd like to see Pena in the 4 spot more
I seem to remember reading last year Rammy actually prefers the 5 spot. I know that it wont happen, but hey, its a thought. I just dont understand why Fukudome is still considered the starting RF and why Dewitt is still considered for being on the team. Send Dewitt to Iowa, he’s struggled far too much to help tthis team right now, and Colvin continues to hit, yet Fukudome will continue to play. I won’t mention that one back up catcher.
Fukudome is starting
because he’s our best leadoff option against RHPs. Even with a low BABIP and consequently low average, his OBP is a healthy .362 this spring. He also plays a very solid RF defensively. For the last time, Fukudome isn’t a terrible player. He just has a terrible contract.
And if the Fukudome hate is more of a symptom of Colvin love; fear not. Colvin will get plenty of ABs this season. I think Soriano/Byrd/Pena are going to be getting quite a few days off.

Colvin is part of the future, Fukudome is not
to me I think either Baker or Barney has won the 2B spot, and if its Baker and you plan on leading him off against lefties, might as well do it against righties. Castro, Cashner, Barney (perhaps), and Colvin, these are the guys that are going to be the future. Colvin needs at bats. Fukudome can be the 4th outfielder. Enough of this “hes our best option at lead off” you lead off one time a game, its an overrated spot in my opinion.
True
He does only leadoff one time a game. But he hits in front of the run producers 4-5 times a game. It is common sense to try and put as many players on base in front of them as possible. Likewise, the 8-9 spots aren’t going to produce many baserunners, so putting a run producer there is essentially a waste of his power.
Whoops
Should have read “so putting a run producer in the leadoff spot is essentially…”
I'm not saying bat Colvin 1
I believe he should be 6/7 right now, and gain experience and learn with the other young guys that are the future of this team. The next few years are goign to be built around castor, cashner, colvin, b jackson, and potentially vitters. not Fukudome. but I view Baker, if he gets the everday job which i believe he should (along with Barney getting at bats) should be the guy. I’m just not in love with kosuke at the lead off spot. Though i suppose i’ll get used to it.
Baker
should start every game against LHPs and is a decent leadoff option then. I agree with you. But if it’s against RHPs, neither hit as well as Fukudome, unfortunately. Of course, the new and improved Barney might be able to show something. Baker, however, has proven that he is worthless against RHPs.
Slingbox, you're cool.

Pete Rose, obviously, with 17. But that doesn't count.
Santo made it 9 times. Tony Oliva was an AS 8 years in a row.
Barry Bonds with 14 will be an interesting test case. Ivan Rodriguez with 14 will probably get in.
Larkin and McGwire and Manny and Piazza had 12.
But for your argument, I think Bill Freehan with 11 is the guy who had the most AS appearances and will definitely not get in.

Did they call this one because of the rain?
"It was a perfect situation for the Brewers," Hill said. "They had a guy up there at the plate [in Counsell] who takes a lot of pride in what he does and he practices those situations, so when it does come up, he gets the bunt down to the right side of the field. They have the perfect guy on first base [in Gomez], who is one of the fastest guys in the league, and they had one of the worst fundamental teams on the field, so it was a perfect situation for them."

Castillo’s hit .706 and has “game-changing arm.” It’s either sit #Cubs bench or play in Iowa. Quade has “good feel” for what club should do.

Like what Castillo has done
but the back up should be Max Ram. Let Castillo get his ABs in Iowa, if Soto goes down, then beef comes up and gets his shot. Unfortunately, i think we all know what that “good feel” is going to equate too…
Play everyday in Iowa
It should be between Max Ram and Hill, not Beef. But this has been debated about at length, and even with a slow day here, I don’t really want to rehash it.
Play in Iowa.

the dulcet tones of Judd doing the postgame
is music to my ears!
Didn't think this was fanpost worthy.
But at least someone has something about it finally!
Quade has his opinions on certain players. For example, catcher Welington Castillo has opened his eyes. Castillo was batting .706 this spring. That will get your attention. However, the Cubs have to determine whether Castillo and the organization are better served if he’s starting at Triple-A Iowa or backing up Geovany Soto on the big league team. Blake DeWitt, on the other hand, is hitting .163 and still has work to do at second base.
Quade said he’s already had some healthy disagreements with Hendry, Bush and others, and that’s OK.
“I’m not of the mentality that I have to win,” Quade said. “I’m not an ego guy. I want to do the right thing.”

B). Dewitt’s on the 25-man roster

I did see how you interpreted it.
I disagree. The statement was made in the context of arguments with the brass, not about winning ballgames. To me, it says Quade doesn’t “have to win”, i.e. the argument, as long as the right thing gets done.
For example, you & I know the “right thing” is to let Koyie Hill go. We don’t know which “side” people in Cubs mgmt. are taking on that (well, except for Hendry). As long as the “right thing” happens here, does it matter if Quade is right or wrong, or “wins”?
I’d say no.

The question is....if Quade doesn't want Hill and "the brass" (Hendry) do....
does Quade still think he doesn’t have to win?

Now I'm confused, what does that mean?
Baseball is back!!

Basically I believe SWL Is saying, will Quade cave in an argument that is so easy to win
Hill SHOULD not be on this team, if the brass is taking the opposite opinion, then it’s an argument Quade NEEDS to win.

Damn SWL
We are almost on the same page.
Does he think he doesn’t have to win or realize that it’s battle he won’t win.
I don’t think Q means at all winning when it comes to on the field

Really, you are all reading way too much into this.
Quade’s just saying he doesn’t have to “win” every argument about players.
So much angst over one statement. Amazing.

The angst...
isn’t really about one statement or one player or one contract Al, (and I think you really actually know that) but you’ve taken such an optimistic view of this organization for so long that you can no longer allow yourself to face some of the stark realities of where some of the real underlying problems this team has had for so long come from. The people in the biggest decision making positions have been not only bad at their jobs, they’ve been allowed to pass the blame off on others working below them time after time.
We as fans see our GM appearing to have decided on a player (i.e.avoiding arbitration with a significant raise) after a horrid performance and now may be advocating the worst player in ST to be included on the active roster when the team heads off to start the season. The manager, whom our GM hand-picked, has publicly said he knows he won’t get to win all the arguments. You tell me how were supposed to take that. We sit in the stands, on our couches and office chairs year after year rooting for this team to win, and we’re rewarded with some of the most bizarre, backwards, dysfunctional decision making over and over again. Yes, not EVERY decision that has been made or will be made is/will be wrong, but there is a marked trend by this GM and Organization as a whole to eventually do the very opposite of the logical rational thing.
We’re pissed off because just as Hill is seemingly being rewarded in-spite of being an abject failure as a baseball player, we the fans sure feel like we’re being used/taken for granted/punished for supporting this team. The Koyie Hill contract this offseason is OUR $10 BLEACHER TICKET DISCOUNT OF DISRESPECT. Does that help you understand a bit better?

The manager, whom our GM hand-picked, has publicly said he knows he won’t get to win all the arguments. You tell me how were supposed to take that.
How you’re supposed to take the entire statement — which is that the manager actually HAD arguments with his GM — is that there is actually some discussion about some of the roster spots that some people here assumed were already sewn up because of the decisions the GM made.
Are all these decisions good? No, they are not. However, I believe the meetings going on this morning may actually result in some of the changes that we (all of us, including me) have advocated here.
If the Cubs do choose Koyie Hill over two players who have performed better, or don’t consider Scott Moore or Darwin Barney for 2B over someone who’s performed worse, I’ll be happy to criticize.
If the Cubs make the other decision, will you be as willing to admit that maybe thing are changing?

Making this one decision correctly will not cause me to admit that things are changing, no.
After I see them continue a trend of good decision making, then I’ll be willing to admit that maybe things are changing.

Yes, but again....
I’m not going to hold my breath for it. Their “good first steps” forward have typically been closely followed by a couple bad steps backward.
