Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox Preview, Thursday 3/24, 4:05 CT: Happy 21st, Starlin Castro

Hey, Starlin Castro. Smile! You're 21 today. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- If you run into Starlin Castro today -- not that you necessarily would -- buy him a celebratory drink. He's legal! Today is Starlin's 21st birthday, and at times, it's hard to remember that a lot of players his age are in Double-A, or playing their junior year of college ball. Castro, though he still needs to work on his defense, had a good offensive season in 2010 and is having a very good spring, leading the team in runs (10) and hitting .367/.392/.673 with a team-leading four home runs, a couple of which were monster shots. He could be poised for a big season, particularly, I think, a power surge.

According to a tweet from Paul Sullivan earlier today, Scott Moore, Bobby Scales and Matt Camp are among roster cuts today. No surprise (to me at least) on Scales and Camp, but I did think that Moore had shown well enough to get a shot. That probably means Blake DeWitt has made the team. Moore will likely get some time at 2B at Iowa. Also cut, via tweet from Bruce Miles, were Augie Ojeda (no surprise, as he's been hurt) and Fernando Perez. Camp, Ojeda, Moore and Scales were sent to minor league camp. Perez was optioned to Iowa.

Matt Garza takes the mound against the White Sox' Phil Humber, who is one of several candidates to replace the injured Jake Peavy. The Sox asked for and were granted permission to use the DH (as the A's did today); Garza will bat. Braden Looper will get another shot at showing he's still got something left today. Chris Sale and Sergio Santos are also scheduled to throw for the White Sox. Important note: today's game begins at 4:05 CDT, an hour later than usual, at the request of ESPN2, who will televise the game nationally. Complete lineups after the jump.

Star-divide

Cubs lineup:
Fukudome RF Castro SS Byrd CF Ramirez 3B Pena 1B Soriano LF Barney 2B Hill C Garza P
White Sox lineup:
Pierre LF Vizquel 2B Dunn DH Konerko 1B Rios CF Quentin RF Pierzynski C Ramirez SS Morel 3B

Here's all the media information for today.

MLB.com Gameday for today's game

Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today. Today's game is being televised by CSN Chicago; if you're outside the CSN area, you can see it nationally on ESPN2. Also, there's an internet audiocast on MLB.com with Mick Gillispie.

Please visit our SB Nation White Sox site South Side Sox. Caution is urged.

There will be an overflow thread posting at 5:30 p.m. CDT. As usual, the overflow thread will NOT post on the front page but will be in the "Recent Stories In Game Threads" box on the right sidebar. If you need an extra overflow thread beyond that one, post it in the FanShot section.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

If Starlin can hit 15-20 hrs as some are suggesting, he should be batting third.

I’d LOVE to see 10. But I think that could be a small stretch. No way I see 15-20 yet.

Again, Have Hill As A Coach Somewhere In the System

He just “ain’t” a major league caliber player. The same could be said of Bobby Scales. They’ve both had their time in the majors.

by memphiscub on Mar 24, 2011 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Why we gotta make him a coach?

Cut him a check, hand him a plane ticket, hugs all around and tell him “see ya when I see ya”. It’s really that simple. Happens on other teams all the time.

i dislike Hill as a player

not as a human and I think he’d have something to offer some young catchers in how to work with a pitching staff. just keep him away from being a hitting coach.

Well, if things go to form...like Silva pretty much locking up the 5th spot after yesterdays outting...

Hill will probably go 3-4 and throw out a runner trying to steal, which will lock up the backup catcher’s spot. Geez, this management is, to quote the great TJ11,…amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

i was thinking this morning

Not that i’m excusing silvas play, but the thought occured to me, what if hose heart issues he had prevented him from working out most of the offseason? Could this maybe explain his weight and be factoring into why the cubs havent released or traded him?

A lovely story:

One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....

But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day.

The end

Barney continues to impress

Wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he is the Opening Day starter, he also shores up the defense up the middle much better than DeWitt. And how about Soriano’s day!

So A.J. Pierzynski got pulled over by the cops!

Anyone see that interview? A.J. got pulled over for speeding and he tried to get out of the ticket by flashing the Sox uniform he was wearing to the cop. That cop must have been a Cubs fan. Maybe that cop gave A.J. an even bigger ticket just for the Sox jersey.

Jack Brickhouse: "Hey! Hey!"
Harry Caray: "Holy Cow!"
Vince Lloyd: "The Chicago Cubs are on the Air!"
Len Casper: "Cubs Win! Oh Baby!"
Bob Brenly: "Give it to a Kid!"
Ron Santo: "YES!" "All Right! Let's do it!" "Ohhh Nooooo!" "Gee Whiz! Come on!" AND... "This Is The Year!"
