Mock Draft
1. Pirates - RHP. Gerrit Cole UCLA
With McCutcheaon/Alvarez/Walker/Tabata forming a nice young offense and Sanchez/Marte on the way Cole should establish himself as an ace caliber SP while Tailion/Allie/Herdia/ZVR/Cain mature.
2. Mariners - 3B Anthony Rendon Rice
The M's would gladly take Rendon or Cole here. Which ever one is available they will take.
3. D'Backs - OF. George Springer UCONN
While Purke is usually linked here with his agent and extra leverage combined with 2 picks in the top 7 may see them going with Springer.
4. Orioles - LHP Matt Purke TCU
Purke would be great vlaue here and look nice sloted behind Matusz/Britton.
5. Royals - OF. Bubba Starlin Knasas H.S.
The Royals will spend money in the draft (24.5 million over the last 3 years) and are apt to take H.S. bats high (Moustakas/Hosmer/Myers). Starlin has been linked to the Royals because of his proximity to KC.
6. Nationals - RHP Taylor Junmenn Texas
Would fit nicely behind Strasburg and both should be ready at about the same time.
7. D'Backs - RHP Tony Zych Louisville
The D'Backs could go the route the Nats went in 2009. Zych is a closer with apower arm who profiles as a sup1st or early 2nd rd. so he should sign quick and realitively cheap.\
8. Indians - RHP Sonny Gray Vanderbilt
Polished SP who would fit nicely with the last 2 years college pitchers (White/Pomeranz). # polished college pitchers to go with an emergingyoung line up.
9. Cubs - LHP Jed Bradley Georgia Tech
This is a good position to be in w/ J. Bradley, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Daniel Norris still available. I go with the college lefty because of the proven track record, good repertoire, and great command. In "Ask BA" yesterday Callis reiterated that a scout told him he would take Jed Bradley over any pitcher in the draft. That's a mouth full considering how deep this draft is. He's polished, will move fast, and fit's a need.
Last year anyone who read my pre-draft stuff knows how much I loved Chris Sale and we all know how he did last year with a bright future. Drew Pomeranz went 4th overall and might have a slight edge in overall stuff but Bradley's command is better. I would take Bradley over both these college lefties from last year.
Norris is probably a dream for us considering the depth of elite college pitching and Wilkens propensity to go for college plahyers w/ his 1st.
Jackie Bradley Jr. I wouldn't have a problem with either but his elite tool is his 80 arm. While I feel he can stick in CF so his power will profile there he's also not a true burner. He's athletic, good PD, and hit tool so if we go bat I'd take him.
This is just my quick early take on things from everyhting I've been reading. Like Chris Sale last year Jed Bradley is fast becoming the player I am falling in love with who has a chance for us to draft. The fact that Bradley is also a LHSP has nothing to do with it. It's merely coincidence.

Good stuff.
I have no idea who any of these guys are, but it’s good to get an idea of what might be out there.
Come on Lisa, I'm trying to impress people here. You don't win friends with salad. ~ Homer J. Simpson
Good stuff indeed...
I like Pomeranz better than Bradley, but I do think Bradley is quality.
I don't think
there is any way the DBacks take Springer with the third pick. I’m reading he’s sliding out of the top ten and even possibly out of the top 20.
I also read this week that the DBacks are looking hard at Hultzen for the #7 pick.
I think Lindor will go before we pick too.
Just what I was going to write
I do think we stand a good chance to choose between all 3 Bradleys, though.
RE:
I think it’s a bit premature to say Springer is falling out of the top 20. The tools are there and it’s still very early.
I’ve heard Hultzen linked to the D’backs @ 7 but with his early performance may push his price tag up to much to sign both a #3 and him.
Lindor in BA’s report on him he looked pretty rough. He still may go in the top 10 but with so much elite college talent avaiable I think it might mush some of the top H.S. down where as in other draft’s Lindor would be a lock to go top 10.
http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-cubs-wrigley-bound/
Someone will take Lindor Top Ten
They shouldn’t, but they will. Middle infielders are often in short supply. See (Recent Draft History, Houston Astros)
Tim Beckham also says "Hi"
Considering Lindor has elite SS defense for his age; projects to stay there; and projects to have above average power there, he’ll be taken in the top 10.
Law has Springer tumbling, too.
He notes lack of production and mechanical issues with his swing.
"Stuff like this is why they should shut off the internet."
by Orval Overall on Dec 17, 2010 1:19 PM CST
His swing mechanics do suck....
but otherwise he looks like a baseball player. He’s got Carlos Beltran-esque potential minus the switch hitting.
It is premature
to say that Springer is falling out to the top 20. It is not premature to say he’s fallen out of the top three. In fact, I think that’s a given.
Someone is going to take a chance on Lindor in the top ten.

Cold-Weather
Its still March, and UCONN is a cold weather school, I would give him the full season before evaluating his performance. His propensity for strikeouts is concerning, but I think that makes him the prototypical Cubs position player draft pick.

Any pitcher?
Yikes. I want a guy that gets that sort of respect.
Each scout has "his" guy
I’ve read the same thing about Bauer/Gray/Hultzen so far this spring. There is at least one scout that would take these guys “before any other pitcher in the draft.” It’s all a load of crap. Nobody is taking any of these guys before Cole.
Not to say I don’t like Bradley, but I want to see his improved stuff stay there before I would take him at #9.
LOL
Please link me to the scouts who said they would take Bauer or Holtzen over any pitcher in the draft. I even said in timh815 last post that nobody is taking any pitcher over Cole. And what do you need to see improve about Bradley’s stuff? Good FB, hard slider, plus CU, and great command?
http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-cubs-wrigley-bound/
Here is the scout on Bauer
http://baseballbeginnings.com/2011/03/15/trevor-bauer-report
I think calling him “the most complete collegiate pitcher in the last 10 years” satisfies what you are looking for.
And please read my post again, as I said I want to see the improved stuff STAY here. His fastball dipped into the high 80’s a lot last year. He has been reportedly sitting in the low 90’s for most of this season. I want to see it stay there all season.
I'm still hoping that Bubba Starling prices himself out of some teams' budgets and falls to us.
(It’s Starlin*G*), btw.

I'm listening to Jed Bradley
and Matt Purke today on streaming audio.
The Tech radio guy
sounds like he calls him “Jet” Bradley. So you know.
Sweet
Let us know what you hear please. If possible maybe there pitching lines, although I guess i could find them. Good pitching matchup to be listening to.

Listening to Bradley
I was very relaxed with his outing. I listened to him for about 5 innings. Consistent 93-95. The only way he was getting beaten was by defensive miscues. Lefty mid-90’s with nice off-speed stuff. I’d happily take him.
Saw Purke in two entirely different style innings. In the first inning, he fanned the side after an opening error. Nobody was close to hitting anything well. In the second, he gave up an oppo solo homer. He walked a guy, and hit a guy. He was very agitated by a runner on second, faking pickoff throws twice.
He ended up giving up some runs after my video feed went to a blue screen.
He looks ridiculously like my memories of Mike Flanagan and Dave McNally, veteran Orioles pitchers from back when. At least, he looks like them if they could throw mid-90’s heat.
Despite Purke’s shaky outing, I still really like him.
Trevor Bauer goes tonight. I haven’t found an outlet for him yet.
Thanks
For doing this write up. I wonder if the stadium gun was a little high, or if Bradley honestly can pump it 93-95 and keep it there. I had heard 90-92 as his comfort zone. 93-95 is tremendous for a lefty with his commance and off-speed stuff, if legit. He was facing a decent Miami team as well.
I'm comfy with him going routinely 93 at least
With the competition, to be a Top Ten candidate, you’ve gotta be really special.
I can learn quite a bit from an audio call, if done well
I have a minor league basketball background. Back in the 80’s, our team brought in a(nother) new backup guard. His first game was on the road. As a ballhandler, I had a decent read on him from the radio call. He sounded like the pressure defense didn’t get to him.
Fluke or no, my hunch was right. Emanuel Davis turned out to be very good, eventually made it to the NBA’s Rockets. He scored a career high 20+ in an NBA game the night before messing up his knee.
If the pitcher gets it, throws it, and has multiple pitches working, I’m a fairly easy sell like that. If he’s laboring, throwing to first a bunch, down 2-0 in the count, I don’t want him with the Ninth Pick this year. Anyone can have a bad night of course, but J Bradley and Purke sounded proper today, even though Purke scuffled.
UCLA audio is usually pretty good...I hope TCU keeps free streaming like they have been
Down here in Texas, I actually got to watch the UT/OSU game last night through Fox Sports Central, an OSU broadcast…I think Fox Fla is showing SC/Fla right now…Might have to go see if I can find that one…
Thanks for your work, great job!!
Question for anyone and everyone:
Is Taylor Jungmann more like Jered Weaver than your prototypical hard throwing college ace? Weird mechanics, long limbs, control and consistent stuff are the major plusses…just a thought that struck my curiosity.
That's a really good comp.
I hadn’t thought of that one, but it does seem to fit very nicely. I don’t have ESPN insider anymore, but KLaw scouted Jungmann’s last start. If anyone has Insider, would they mind posting a few of the highlights of it?
I have seen or listened to at least 20-25 of Jungmann's starts since he arrived at the 40 Acres..
This is a pretty accurate report..Only concern is the velo has not been topping like last year. I have seen 94 occasionally this year but most everything is 89-92.
Not sure if he is sacrificing velo for command or not..His command has been incredible. Last yr he walked 41 in 120 IP.Right now he is at 5 in 51.2 IP……
“Jungmann has the physicality of a durable front-end starter to go along with good power in all three of his offerings. He has a long frame but does not maximize his extension, leaving some effort and recoil. The Texas ace displays excellent arm speed, which generates velocity and some life on his fastball, as well as excellent spin on both his breaking ball and his change. His fastball is a consistent low-90s offering, regularly climbing to 94/95 mph, and he moves it around to all quadrants. Jungmann’s low-80s power breaker has a slurvy shape but comes with tight spin and gets incredibly late bite to go along with good depth. It’s one of the better breaking balls around and he knows how to hit his spots with it. His third offering is a change-up that he turns over to get fade. In fact, he throws with such good arm speed that the fade produced by the heavy spin ends-up generating fringe-breaking ball depth to the arm side (Jungmann acknowledges this heavy action with his hand signal for the pitch during warm-ups, which features the standard palm-down glove indicating a change-up, followed by a rolling over of the glove to the arm side).
Also, new bats and home park UT plays in should definitely boost a pitcher's confidence
and could be a factor in improved command..But 5/42 BB to K really magnifies it…
Oh and reading about Jed Bradley makes him...
my new FAVORITE 2011 MLB DRAFT PROSPECT OF THE WEEK!!!!!!
He sounds like your prototypical TOR lefty…no one’s got a bad word to say right now either.
Right on que!
Baseball Beginnings just put up a new video of Bradley from the Cape this past year.
http://baseballbeginnings.com/2011/03/28/jed-bradley-video-3
I must say that I really like his mechanics. The only thing I would like to see cleaned up a little bit would be his follow through, but these are some of the better mechanics I’ve seen in the potential picks at #9. If tim815’s radar reports hold up, I must say that Bradley probably has overtaken Jackie Bradley Jr as my favorite potential collegiate pick.
This guy really is serious...
and really would be a great pick at 9. He’s got a good name for this team too…as corny and nonsensical as that sounds.
I like him too
Probably better than any College arm not named Gray. (or Cole, of course. We’re not counting him.)
by Josh Timmers on Mar 29, 2011 12:34 AM CDT up reply actions
Has Gray shown anything close to a usable changeup yet?
His lack of a 3rd pitch and his control (and in turn his efficiency) are the reasons I hope he gets picked well before the Cubs come on the clock. But if he did develop a respectable changeup over the spring, it would make him that much more interesting.
What Baseball America says
about that is that “Gray has the makings of an effective changeup, but he seldom uses it in games at this stage.”
My biggest concern about Gray is that his delivery tends to get a big wild at times, much more than I’m worried abou his chageup.

Look in Draft Prep 6.0 thread
I saw Sonny Gray last friday here at University of Arkansas (where he pitched an 8 IP CG loss) where I talked about Gray and I met an AL team scout there and we also talked about Gray as well… his line that game- 8 IP (complete game loss) 6 H 2 ER 4 BB 12 Ks 34 BF 4 FO 8 GO 121 pitches
Here’s what I typed
“I like Gray, but I don’t know if I would want the Cubs to draft him. I mean there are good and bad things about him. At least tonight, he had a good groundball % with a lot of Ks. I like seeing those 2 together. He also wasn’t locating pitches very well. While he had the endurance to be a starter right now, there’s a good possibility that he could end up being a bullpen arm as well. His mechanics looks violent and it may or may not cause injury in the future. One thing I don’t like is his follow through after he throws his pitch. He ends up in the first base side away from the mound a bit and it seems a couple times his back was facing the hitter. His slider was on tonight. I’m pretty sure that it’s a slider, not a curve. I don’t know his pitches, but it looks like fastball/slider/changeup. He fooled several hitters with his slider tonight. His fastball was a little off in location in the first, but got better as the game went on. I couldn’t tell if he used his changeup a lot or not, but it looked like the pitch that Arkansas got hits on. It’s not bad, but it’s not above average I should say”
Here’s what the scout said about Gray
“He thought Gray would stick as a starter (question I ask was about concerns of maybe being a reliever due to mechanics/endurance that had some people worry about). I ask him what was his speed tonight and his fastball topped out at 96, but sat 92-93 with late movement that tails against righty through the whole game and slider top at 87 (got hit hard as it was flat- a long flyout as he told me), but mainly 82-84 with very good movement. The scout likes those 2 pitches. He said his changeup is just ok, but it needs some improvement for him to be above average and to take the next step as a starter. I asked him (assuming he knew the draft order, which teams, etc…) where Gray would end up and he said he thinks Nationals will pick him with the 6th pick. I ask him if there were any reason and he just said it was a gut feeling.”
To answer your question Ryno, after thinking about it after a week, IMO I think he does have an usable changeup in where if he used it more often, it would keep the hitters guessing (instead of just being a 2 pitch pitcher- even though those 2 pitches are above average (his slider was great that night) even though it’s probably just average right now. I don’t think it’s a lack of a 3rd pitch, but I think he does need to use it more and trust it more. Then again, this is based on a game I saw where he rarely used his changeup and it didn’t look that good. I’m sure he has other games where his changeup looks really good and he use it more often in that game. I still don’t think the Cubs should draft him as he’s too risky IMO as there are other things I look at first before his changeup.
Bradley would be solid
Over Gerrit Cole for top pitcher though….thats certainly pushing it. Very real chance he will be there at #9. Love his arm slot and from the video I’ve seen, he repeats the delivery well.
Springer and probably Purke won’t go that high. Springer has all the tools, but will probably fall to at least the mid-first round because he has yet to do anything this year. I think Purke is starting to have big time durability concerns and between the dangerously low arm slot and the OK fastball velocity, it would be a surprise if he went that high.
Still to early to tie players to teams, just look at their overall rank to gauge where they could end up.

Sorry about the confusion...
when I said “potential collegiate pick.” Cole is not a potential pick for us as he will be taken either #1 or #2; thus I left him out. Obviously Cole would be the #1 pitcher on my board, if I was allowed such things.
Jed Bradley and Trevor Bauer are quickly becoming my two favorite guys that should be available at #9.
