Yawn
Another day, more negativity from Rosenbloom.
He’s getting to be a poor man’s Jay Mariotti.

Did a rich man once pay for Mariotti?
If so, that’s how the economy collapsed.

Rosembloom...
…can lay it on a little thick at times, but I can’t disagree with the general premise of what he is saying here.
I believe Ricketts is in a bit over his head and has made some poor decisions (or lack of decisions) so far during his tenure. I have also said Ricketts has so far reminded me of Michael McCaskey’s running of the Bears and I think he is going to learn some tough lessons as McCaskey did.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say...
Ricketts and Rosenbloom aren’t old fishin’ buddies, I take it. That guy’s an ass.

Excellent way to put it, SDSJM
It’s the written version of sports-talk-radio pap.

"I don't often agree with..." Rosenbloom
But, in this case it’s hard to dispute a lot of what he’s saying. The Ricketts-tenure hasn’t exactly been a model of competency thus far.

I love the dry humor of Rosenbloom
“Lou Piniella quit on the team (a year earlier, if you were watching), but still was allowed to clown the franchise for as long as he wanted because the general manager who never should’ve been retained and the joke of a team president played the new owner for a sucker without any pride;”
It’s almost like he can read my mind.
So Rosenbloom's OK as long as you agree with him?

Yeah, it's dumb and snarky for no other reason than to be dumb and snarky.

It's snarky but its not dumb
Tom is either playing a good hand at poker or doesn’t understand the magnitude of the situation he’s in.
Just win the next game...!
Unfortunately I feel the same way
I “hope” he’s just feeling out the situation, but I “fear” he’s in just a little over his head.

I agree with him that
1) Hendry and Clown Kenney need to go ASAP
and
2) that Ricketts is really coming off as an amateur.
The rest of the article falls flat though. The sensationalism is contrived and boring.
So all you Rosey haters, exactly what is he saying is so wrong?
The whole premise about this is leverage which – unless you’re blind or plain naive – is EXACTLY what Reinsdorf did for the ChiSox about 25 years ago. The threat to move is what drove an 11th-hour deal with the state.
Now if there’s a different way, let’s hear it. Look, we ALL love Wrigley; or more likely most of us do. HOWEVER, it is SORELY limited in revenue streams. Something must give.
I don’t always agree with him and mostly it involves [Blackhawks] hockey. And he knows it since I’ve told him face-top-face in the past. He’s really a much different person in-person than what comes through in an article.
Think about how the Cubs message is not so crystal clear since McDonough left the team.
Just win the next game...!
I don't hate him because he gives the cubs shit, hell they deserve it most of the time. And he's not always wrong but....
I hate his writing because he tends to bash the same groups of players over and over again, even when they don’t derserve it. The stereotypes can only be tolerated for so long.
Latinos = lazy
Big Z = crazy
cubs = stupid
Steve Stone = amazing
That shit gets really really old.
Think he's said
Rami/Sori were lazy. Not all Latin players. He did not cite “ALL” in his critique.
Big Z is a nut-job until proven otherwise.
The Cubs [mgmt org folks] are stupid. Ricketts isn’t playing his cards right at present, as viewed by his audiences.
Stone is an amazing baseball knowledgeable talent, he’ just a conceded ass.
It may get old but for the most part its true.
Just win the next game...!
He
goes about calling those guys lazy in some really ridiculous ways. Ramirez never dives for ground balls? I think we all know very well that he does do that. Its the dumb conclusions he comes up with also. Those guys are lazy so Pena was brought in to teach Castro and Soto how not to be lazy? Just a completely ridiculous statement.
And I would love for someone to actually prove that Big Z is in fact a “nut-job”. From all accounts he is a great family guy and great for the community. I can’t exactly blame him for blowing up now and then, especially when the team around him seems to not give a shit.
Steve Stone = not amazing…..I think thats all the explaination needed there.
He expresses his opinion, so that's the columnist coming out
Tidbit he doesn’t cite: for instance Rami not diving as much since his Miller Park injury.
It’s not bad that Pena is brought in partially for that reason he cites. It happens all the time and too many get upset. Just the other day the Blackhawks brought in Marcus Kruger from the Swedish Elite League. He is Swedish and one of the first [columnist] comments was that current ’Hawks like Hjalmarrson and Stalberg can help out Kruger with his transition to America as they can provide some Swedish influence and balance for the kid. Moral of the story: Not one ’Hawks fan complained about it.
Z lost his cool too many times. Way too many times. He has more lives than Morris the Cat. From Barrett to Lee to chucking the ball into the OF when he was tossed from a game. Stable players just do not do that. He’s a great talent but he does not know how to channel his anxiety. That’s a fact.
Stoney is [amazing] baseball knowledge. He comes off crass often but he’s smart and it’s his job to call it as he sees it.
Just win the next game...!

This isn’t even close to what Rosenbloom was saying. He wasn’t saying the Cubs were using Carlos Pena to help bridge a cultural divide with young Hispanic players, teaching them the language and how to live in American society. He was saying they brought in Carlos Pena as a positive influence as a counter to the poisonous atmosphere created by Zambrano, Soriano, and Ramirez (also known as “The Overpaid, Underperforming, and Therefore Lazy Latinos.”)
Not even close. But nice try.

How much do you know about the 'Hawks???
And do you know there’s cultural divide in a hockey dressing room ALL the time??
A few years ago the ’Hawks had a similar problem with Havlat, Lang & Koci.

Well said...
…and even McDonough (the great marketing guy) has said many times in the past and I paraphrase; “the greatest marketing strategy is winning”. Judging by how he brought in the right people with the Hawks to help bring a championship, something tells me he would have done the same thing with the Cubs a couple of years ago.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
The only thing McD didn't have hanging over him on Madison St
was the way the ’Hawks lost before his arrival. They just plain lost, sucked big time; whatever.
Little things (Marcus Kruger for instance, no pun intended) is the result of McD putting the right people (e.g. Scotty Bowman) in place.
So….who is THE guru of baseball? Scotty Bowman’s equivalent in baseball; TWELVE total championships !! That’s the kind of guy the CUBS should be bringing into their org. Not keeping Crain Kenney…!
It’s THIS kind of lack-of-the-big-picture thinking guys like Rosey latch on to and let rip.
Just win the next game...!
I have said the samething...
…since Ricketts signed on the dotted line to acquire the team.
IMO, it is a huge error in judgment and now the whole process is delayed two years (assumming he makes the right decisions after this year).
The loyal Cub fan base simply deserves better, just as the Hawk’s fan base deserved the same, and they got it.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Yup, and its why I ranted about
guys like Kenney being kept. It’s not just a person’s job function or if its the baseball operations or business operations or any thing else. It’s the culture that’s been carried over from the Trib’s ivory tower.
Rocky & McD cleaned house. You know that well too. Many ’Hawks fans know that. It was that process that turned around our beloved moribund franchise; not putting home games on TV. That was an artifact of a much bigger culture change that was needed.
Ricketts didn’t do that. I was hoping and praying….nope, didn’t happen. Too bad ’cuz I really thought he was a sharp business man. Then again it was Papa Joe that made TD-A what it is.

Exactly why...
…he reminds me of Michael McCaskey.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
That was an artifact of a much bigger culture change that was needed.
This is why McDonough and Rocky did what they did with the Blackhawks. You said, correctly, that the franchise was “moribund”. The Cubs. apart from winning on the field, weren’t in that kind of shape.
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago
The 'Hawks were the moribund franchise
1996 began a huge downfall than continued until 2007.

Bottom line here...
…no matter how popular the team is, is what kind of shape the organization is in to produce a contender every year (nothing better than that to increase demand).
Everything eventually falls back to the quality of your baseball/hockey operations, because that ultimately defines the product quality. Ricketts has decided the status quo was ok and he didn’t need anybody to help him figure it out. Both Rockey and McDonough felt and acted differently.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
Further point.
The Blackhawks franchise was on the cusp of a revival anyway, with Kane and Toews. McDonough kind of lucked into it. If he thinks he’s responsible for the renaissance, he’s mistaken.
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago
Maybe, maybe not...
…what McDonough had on his hands was a GM (Dale Tallon), that had made some good draft picks, but had also made some terrible errors in regards to the salary cap situation. Also, his main crucial move, was bringing in a proven winner in Scotty Bowman and not accepting status quo. Upon Bowman’s arrival, a new coach is recommended that was more equipped to take a young team to the next level and also to compete with some other experienced coaches in the Hawks division. It was a bold move, because Savard was an icon, but it was clearly the right move to focus on one thing; “winning”.
I’m not laying all the credit for the Cup at McDonough’s feet, but it is reasonable to say he made bold moves to assure the hockey brain trust was “top notch” and nothing would get in the way of listening to this brain trust, to put them in the best position to win. So far, I can’t say near the samething for Ricketts.

It's not that Rosenbloom is a White Sox Homer...
It’s that he’s an obnoxious D-BAG White Sox homer… He constantly repeats the same
old meme’s on how the Cubs fail…
I mean come on… Reinsdorf has Rosey’s lip prints on his butt cheeks…
R.I.P. Ronnie Santo... you will be missed...
He rips the living daylights out of the ChiSox too

Exactly
Well most of the time. He does every once in awhile commend something / someone.
But remember his job is to take a side and provide opinion, finally create a stir. And by the very look of this post and others here he’s done his job.
I don’t always agree and like I mentioned before I hammer him on Blackhawks things but he’s got a few good points with this one.
