Chicago Cubs vs. Seattle Mariners Preview, Friday 3/25, 3:05 CT: One Week From Today
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- One week from today, the Cubs and Pirates will be opening the 2011 regular season at Wrigley Field. Most of the roster spots are now decided; Reed Johnson is set as fifth outfielder. Also, it now appears that Darwin Barney will get starts at 2B, maybe even the majority of the starts. That's a good thing; Barney is probably the Cubs' best defensive infielder, and we have seen some defensive problems this spring. If Barney can help stabilize the middle infield, and hit the way he hit last September and this spring, that's a distinct improvement.
Today's announcement that Robert Redford is to throw out the first pitch on Opening Day was a head-scratcher -- until BCB'er daver found this link that indicates that Joe Ricketts is one of the executive producers of Redford's new film. Never mind the discussion of "who owns the team", it's clear that this was a pander by the family to Redford because of this connection. Yes, I know Ron Santo Jr. is to sing the 7th inning stretch -- but the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day ought to be given to someone with a Cubs team connection.
Randy Wells will start this afternoon against a Mariners split squad in Mesa. Seattle lefthander Aaron Laffey, who is not one of their rotation starters but instead a bullpen hopeful, will start for them, followed by Tom Wilhelmsen, Cesar Jimenez and Chris Ray. Game time goes back to the usual 1:05 (3:05 CDT). Complete lineups after the jump.

This lineup looks pretty darn good
I’ve decided to stop being pessimistic about our offense. At least for now.
Give it...
…25-30 games and lets see what happens.

Pessimist Nate says
400 strikeouts for soriano and Pena, optimist Nate says 70 homeruns!
Can we have both?

I like that line up
Maybe it’ll be an actual one once the season starts.

It's bizarre to me....
….zero Cub connection on Ron Santos day/opening day?
I am sure Redford is a nice man but once again the Ricketts show they are out of touch with the fan base.
I didn't think
Ron Santo day was until sometime in August.

Just plain strange isn't it ...
But then again they had Larry King sing the 7 th inning last summer . Not a Cubs fan nor had he ever been to Wrigley . Just really makes you wonder about Ricketts .
All I want to know is this:
Has the FREE PRESSEY campaign been successful? Are they ditching the walk up music recordings and bringing back Gary Pressey for batter intros?

Hmmm.
The Natural thing to do is overreact, but goodness; of all The Candidates to choose! All the President’s Men couldn’t take The Sting this “Redford” decision inflicts on Ordinary People like you and me. Cub fans like The Chase of the season and The Way We Were was just fine with us.

Really glad Barney got the spot
Baker and Barney will be plus defenders. If Castro and Ramirez improve on the field then we should see a lot less unearned runs.
Im still not sure if i believe in this lineup outside of Soto, Castro, and Byrd, but i like this Pitching staff. I have a good feeling about Dempster and Wells having good years. It looks like they have good control on their pitches.
I believe 1-4, no one is gonna have an ERA above 4.

I'm ok with Redford.
This may be the only time he is in Chicago, he’s a very well known celebrity and he does have that Roy Hobbs thing going for him.

I loved "Sneakers" as a kid.
And “All the President’s Men” is a classic.

At first I thought he was the guy that made the salad dressing, but he’s dead.
Then I thought he was in ENEMY OF THE STATE, but that’s Gene Hackman—and he’s awesome.
Then I remembered SPY GAME with Brad Pitt. It’s always nice when young people help old people out.

That dude who makes the salad dressing makes a mean lemonade as well.

Great dressing.
Also good work in CARS.

I found A Bug's Life to be of lesser quality.
The hick pick-up truck from CARS was hysterical, however. He’s like Larry the Cable Guy but able to form sentences into jokes.

I think Bug's Life gets a bad rap.
Maybe it was a letdown after how good Toy Story was, but I think it’s aged well.
I also thought WALL-E was way overrated.

Which is what I think of when I think of Wall-E.

Real glad to see Barney going to get a good bulk of starts
but this makes me wonder. Why did we send Moore to minor league camp and keep Dewitt? I know Moore is AAAA, but he had the hot bat, and Dewitt is now the back up third basemen. I would of preferred keeping the guy who can come of the bench and hit a homer as opposed to the guy who’s hitting approach has changed and he hasnt figured it out. Unless Dewitt is out of options, I don’t like it…
DeWitt is not out of options
sorry to ruin your day
In fact, if he spent enough time in the minors, he
could avoid arbitration.
Shrugs
And could get the at bats to figure out his new approach.
But the Cubs are right, he should stay at the big league team where he brings 0 value now…
Maybe someone will get dinged at AAA
and he’ll get recalled to help them through.
Shrugs
I know what this game needs...
