Rosenbloom's style...
…is over the top, because that is what he is getting paid to do and you have to recognize that.
Beyond that point, the content of what he wrote was on target – IMHO.

Hmmm.
So, Hendry is praising Wellington. My guess is Quade wants to keep Hill, and Hendry wants to keep Silva.
Why on Earth would Quade wanna keep Hill?
Silva I understand because of $$$$$…but Hill? Quade would come off as an idiot if it was to get out that HE’S the reason Hill makes this club.

Perceived ability to handle pitchers.
I’ve said this in other threads. After Quade took over, Hill caught a majority of the final month (Soto was hurt). The Cubs played better because the pitching was better, and I think Quade thinks Hill had a lot to do with that.
Needless to say, I don’t agree.
We don't know that for sure.
It may be that BOTH Quade and Hendry wanted Hill. I know Hendry has praised Castillo, but it could be both.

Can the Cubs win in 2012? Sure they CAN
but it’s pretty unlikely.
This type of mindset continues to infuriate me. As long as Hendry keeps looking to catch lightning rather than set the groundwork for continued future success, we’ll always be saying ‘wait till next year’.
I’m tired of excuses, and I’m tired of hoping that veterans somehow reinvent themselves into productive players. The fact that Hendry traded Lilly and Theriot and ended up with a backup second baseman hitting below Mendoza was the last straw for me with this guy.
Do the hard work and make the hard decisions to keep this franchise annually competitive. That’s all I want. I’d rather have a consistent franchise that threatens every year than constantly HOPE that everything falls into place.

"If you'd have known the players we'd add this offseason ahead of time, you'd be jumping up and down!"
Okay.
I mean, I guess.
I think we all kinda figured it would be Carlos Pena.
And I guess we added Matt Garza, but Lord knows we paid for him.
And…. Kerry Wood? Who had to ask, flat out, if we’d take him back at any price?
I mean, is this what Hendry’s talking about?

Yeah, that stuck out to me too.
I know he’s gotta pretend to be excited about this mediocre team, but his lip service just ends up pissing me off even more.
GM's are in charge of Managers, not the other way around.
Agree
I try to be as optimistic as anyone at this time of year but I look at this team and I just can’t get excited that they have any realistic chance.
Soriano is a waste of space in left…Fukudome will continue to underachieve in right (with Colvin as a so-so sub)…Byrd is a servicable centerfielder but going into the season with him as our #3 hitter pretty much tells you all you need to know about our starting line-up.
And did I read that right or did Haugh basically say that it’s okay for Pena to hit below the Mendoza line as long as he hits some occasional tape measure shots? I’ve got a news flash: if Pena can’t crack ,200, we’re in for a VERY long season on the northside.

Do you really believe that ...
… Pena is going to hit the way he did in a year where he had a serious foot injury?
Or is maybe his 2008 or 2009 performance more of a guide? Plus, he’s going from a pitcher’s park to a hitter’s park. I expect him to improve.

Not worth wasting your breath with these guys, Al
Now one of them’s already writing off 2012.
The unrelenting negativity from a lot of these posters is ruining the enjoyment of the sport for a lot of others.

So true.
god forbid this team actually have a capable player or an unproven rookie to fill the trade of pieces.
Well run teams trade overpaid veterans and get something in return, even if it’s as miniscule as a single A arm for relief. The fact of the matter is that the Cubs dumped Derrick Lee for an equal player and got zilch.
Explaining how well this team handles it’s money and business is not worth wasting your time with these guys…..AL.
bootlicking little suckup…

Sorry.
That was a personal response. I’ve no idea if SWL is a suckup or a bootlicker so I shouldn’t have said that. Totally out of line.
Apologies.

As for me...
I was merely repeating and reacting to what Haugh said. I’m certainly not expecting Pena to hit below .200 but, apparently, he is. I thought his statement (trading long home runs for a decent average) was absurd.

GJ, maybe I'm having a bad day,
but I’m not quite sure of your point. (Not slamming you about it, i just honestly don’t get what you’re driving at.)

And actually..
… the Cubs did get one decent prospect for Derrek Lee. He’s a couple years away, but still might turn into something.

I'm expecting him to be awesome.
I just feel like Hendry’s gilding the lily a LOT when he says we’d all have been “jumping up and down” with joy if only we’d known in advance how awesome his offseason was going to be.
It was a fine offseason. Largely treading water from Lee to Pena, and Lilly to Garza. Payroll was reduced. Overall nice job.
No one’s jumping for joy over it. I’m wondering why Hendry expected that.
