Chicago Cubs vs. Colorado Rockies Preview, Sunday 3/27, 3:05 CT: The Last Televised Spring Game

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Today's game, to be televised on WGN, is your final TV look at the Cubs before Friday's opener at Wrigley Field. The games Monday and Tuesday will be on audio only (Monday on mlb.com, Tuesday on WGN). So take a close look at the team today, because with the exceptions of the two extra catchers, the 25 other guys are the ones who will be heading north on Friday.

Regarding Carlos Sivla, via various tweets this morning, we learn that Silva has officially been released. According to this Paul Sullivan article, the Cubs are on the hook for more money than we originally thought:

If the Cubs release Silva, they are responsible for his $11.5 million salary. The Mariners, who traded Silva to the Cubs for Milton Bradley, are responsible for the $2 million buyout on Silva's 2012 option. The Cubs used the $6 million surplus they received from the Mariners in the trade to sign Marlon Byrd last year.

That's a very expensive lesson for Jim Hendry to learn; the release clearly means that they had absolutely no takers for a trade, even if they ate the whole salary, which they now have to do. The lesson to be learned: don't ever make another signing like [name redacted] again.

So the only remaining roster decision is backup catcher. While both Welington Castillo and Max Ramirez remain on the roster, it seems that the decision to keep Koyie Hill as backup has already been made. But the Cubs surprised us yesterday and today with the Silva/Cashner choice. Maybe they'll do it again. (No, I won't hold my breath waiting.)

Ryan Dempster will start for the Cubs today, his final spring training tuneup before Opening Day on Friday at Wrigley Field. Other Cubs listed to go today are John Grabow, James Russell, Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood (it would be Wood's first back-to-back outings). The Rockies are sending a split squad to Mesa; Clayton Mortensen will start, followed by relievers Matt Daley and Eric Stults. Complete lineups after the jump.

Many would argue that you didn't need hindsight

to know three years to Bradley was dumb the second Hendry finished the dinner with Bradley and his agent.

Three years,

For someone with a track record of behavioral problems, I don’t know anyone who liked the deal. And it wasn’t even hindsight. I know very few people who liked that deal when MB and Hendry agreed to terms.

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Bull.......

…. do you have amnesia? Do you forget all the arguments here about giving the guy a chance? I remember, because I was one of the people saying he would implode. Yet, I’m not going to crow about being right, because not only did Hendry admit he was wrong by unloading him, he managed to get something, anything (Silva) for the guy, and now has cut his losses there too. If not for Silva’s first half last year, 2010 would have sucked even more than it already did.

I didn't take place in those arguments here.

But I spoke to a few Cubs fans about that deal, and none of them liked the deal. I was against it, too. I thought it was too long of a deal, and I thought MB couldn’t keep his anger in check for that long.

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

I'll admit

that I liked the idea of taking a chance on Bradley. But in my defense, I hated the contract. He should have been on the contract that Carlos Pena is on this year with maybe an option for a second season. If someone else was going to offer him more, so be it. Bobby Abreu was still on the market, and I’d have just offered him the same.

by Josh Timmers on Mar 27, 2011 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I was in favor of the trade

but was surprised at the amount and length. I know a number of people like to reinveny history but there was a significant number of people who liked the idea of bradley and his monsterous numbers coming to Chicago.

by tharr on Mar 27, 2011 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

However...

….. Don’t forget, many, many arguments were had here about giving Bradley a chance, that he deserved a fresh start in Chicago. For the record, I was never for it. But, not everyone was against it. Eventually though, Hendry unloaded Bradley for Silva, and most of us here thought Hendry did well to get anything for Bradley because he was able to rid himself of all that went with the guy. In Silva, at the time, he merely got a guy who wasn’t pitching well with a bloated contract. There were not many, if any, rumblings about him being a bad guy. Silva goes on to have that decent first half and suddenly Hendry looked particularly savvy. Silva has a bad second half that continues into Spring, and now Hendry never did anything right. That’s bullshit. Hendry still has the balls to cut his losses here as opposed to stubbornly holding on to the guy, something not everyone would do. Now most everyone here is acting as if they knew this was going to happen all along. That’s also bullshit.

Many saying to give Bradley a chance said that after he was signed.

At that point, there was nothing to do but hope for a changed Bradley.

For the record, I wasn’t excited with Bradley but would have been ok on a one year deal. I thought 3 years was idiotic. It was even worse because then he had to move Fukudome out of position. The whole thing was horrible decision making.

As for the Silva deal, I thought Silva was going to fall flat last year. He was better than I expected. Hendry gets some credit as the Silva deal did save the Cubs some money but I have a hard time giving much credit as the Bradley deal was incompetence. So he did salvage something out of a deal that should have cost him his job.

I don't think Paul Sullivan has that right

From Cots

acquired by Chicago Cubs in trade from Seattle 12/18/09, with Mariners paying Cubs $9M in the deal ($3.5M in 2010, $5.5M in 2011)

The fact that the Cubs signed Marlon Byrd is inconsequntial to who is paying Silva’s contract in 2011.

Sullivan is doing reporter accounting, not real accounting.

"Easy on the words, brother,'' Quade said.

by RiskyBusiness on Mar 27, 2011 1:22 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

Exactly

The Byrd signing has absolutely nothing to do with the numbers around Silva. Again Sullivan presents sloppy reporting.

If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

by tharr on Mar 27, 2011 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

you are correct in one aspect that Byrd's deal has nothing to do with Bradley/Silva

However, what Sullivan meant was that Seattle did relieve the Cubs of some of the MB burden, as they considered MB to be a superior player to CS. The net result of the trade was cash savings for the Cubs. Once that savings had been achieved, the Cubs then had money available to help sign Byrd. So while Byrd was not part of the trade/contract, that trade did provide salary relief, and those funds were used to sign Byrd.

ask not what the Cubs can do for you - ask what you can do for the Cubs.

by holy mackeral on Mar 27, 2011 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

My criticism relates to Sully's claim

that the Cubs were on the hook for $11.5M. That’s dead wrong.

If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

by tharr on Mar 27, 2011 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Either Sullivan got his $11.5M from the AP

Or the AP got it from him. The AP had the same figure on Saturday on Yahoo.

"Easy on the words, brother,'' Quade said.

by RiskyBusiness on Mar 27, 2011 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Here is Sullivan's column when the trade was announced

According to Cot’s baseball contracts

Neither calls for anything close to $11.5M after Seattle pays us.

If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

by tharr on Mar 28, 2011 3:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I know he's getting paid the $11.5M and so does his accountant

and his agent, and his wife.

But to say the Cubs already spent the money that Seattle sent with Silva is erroneous. Because the Cubs probably would not have signed Byrd if they could not trade away MB.

4 days to Opening day. happy times.

"Easy on the words, brother,'' Quade said.

What makes you think the decision has already been made about Hill?

I hope that you’re wrong, and I’m sure that you do too, but it just doesn’t make sense to me. Pretend that Hill is out, then I would prefer Ramirez for right now. I think that he is just more flexible in his ability to catch and play 1B. Also he could be a valuable PH, or more valuable than Hill. Castillo needs more AB in Iowa anyways. Like you said they surprised us with the Silva thing, I’m ready for another surprise

I've been reading alot about our offense

and alot of “experts” seem to hate the idea of Byrd batting 3rd, and I don’t understand the distain. As long as he can drive the ball and keep the lineup moving with his high BA, I have no problem with him being 3rd in the lineup. Especially when we have our power coming up behind him ( Rammy/Pena). the only other person I would want to bat 3rd would be Soto..

by BadDecisions on Mar 27, 2011 1:53 PM CDT reply actions

The concern is

that the first half All-Star Byrd’s numbers of .317 / .365 / .480 masked a very mediocre second half of .261 / .321 / .361. So who is the real Byrd?

John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

by rlpete on Mar 27, 2011 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point..

But I also think Byrd knows that as well. he susposedly did an intense workout routine over the offseason where he built up his legs. Think he lost 15lbs as well. The way he plays the game I want to give him the benefit of the doubt .

by BadDecisions on Mar 27, 2011 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

His final numbers are the real Byrd

he is good, not great and really should be a #2, 6 or 7 hitter. Soto should really bat in the three hole. However as long as he hits the way he has this spring I am fine with where he is.

by jpeters407 on Mar 27, 2011 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

It seems Byrd is somewhat similar to Fukudome

Very good early numbers. Right now I start him #3 but prepare to drop im when/if he falls off. I also limit his starts to around 120 games. That gives us another good pinch hitter when he sits.

I think it's a combination of both.

Selection of players who are past their prime or the biggest names out there, the money doled out to players who really are not or were not very good to begin with. These issues, combined with the long contracts with NTCs, is probably why many of us are quick to criticize Hendry.

Especially after he inexplicably blew up the 2008 team.

Tim Wilken is not a problem

This is a phenomenal draft upcoming. Our prospects have been doing very well recently. If we dump a bunch of money (smartly spent) into overslot bonuses, our future pipeline will be helped immensely. It is far easier to call up a decent reliever from the minors in July than to trade someone for someone else’s junk.

Is there any word about Hayden Simpson?

We don’t hear as much out of minor league camp, but from what we know, 10 months later, our 2010 draft has a first rounder still waiting to throw his first pro pitch, and a second rounder who got super fat.

I’m very hopeful about this year’s loaded draft. I’d be ecstatic if we’d parlayed Lilly into an extra first rounder and a sandwich pick instead of Blake DeWitt, Wallach and Smit.

I must admit

I’m not an expert on the draft. While I understand the draft is loaded this year, I don’t have a good feel for the value added by using overslot bonuses. For instance, would $1M extra buy a 1st rounder in the 4th round? And if it does, is the player actually a 1st rounder rather than a 4th in reality and we have over rated him? One thing that troubles me is the type of contract handed Shark. In reality, he probably was a 3-5 round pick. I’m not really confidant we evaluate players well enough to waste slots on the roster for them.

Nope, sadly even compared to Soriano he is at best a pinch hitter or defensive replacement

three or four years ago he was an everyday player for a bad team, now even teams like the Pirates and Royals aren’t offering him a job. But you want him to be OUR starting LFer?
