Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Via tweet from Carrie Muskat; Cubs just issued an official press release confirming the unconditional release. The spring roster stands at 27 -- the only additional players are the two extra catchers. The 40-man roster stands at 39 -- Reed Johnson will be added before Opening Day.

I don't know what they see in that guy.

He’s a slightly better version of Fernando Perez.

some '09 Nyjer Morgan

but I agree … not very good and is a headcase.

Screw the haters. It's Cutler time.

Wasn't he the one that threw done his mitt when he missed the fly ball.

And then he just let the ball sit there. I believe it lead to an inside the park homerun.

Slightly better version of Fernando Perez?

Are you kidding me? I’m in no way calling Nyjer Morgan a “great” player, but I think we can at least say he has value on a Major League team. Perez has none.

Now whether you would want to put up with Morgan is another story, but he’s not bad.

by mic on Mar 27, 2011 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Not great.

But Perez wouldn’t even hit .150 if he got regular playing time.

One is a decent MLBer, one is not an MLBer.

Morgan to the Brewers?

Good news for the Cubs. Just extra turmoil for the Brewers…and that’s a good thing.

And the desperation purge

continues. Cutter Dykstra was their #16 Prospect.

by timh815 on Mar 27, 2011 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Trading Dykstra isn't necessarily desperation

No power and no position. Looks like the Brewers have been moving him around looking for a position and so far nothing looks very good.

I’m not a Carlos Gomez fan so in a platoon Morgan/Gomez might be ok.

John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

by rlpete on Mar 27, 2011 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

If you're dealing a #16 Prospect for a head case

That’s one more chip you can’t use for something else. Willing to let them continue trading middling prospects for headcases from now until September.

by timh815 on Mar 27, 2011 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the #16 prospect

in what is generally considered the worst farm system in baseball.

Dykstra is not much of a prospect at all. They won’t miss him.

by Josh Timmers on Mar 27, 2011 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

If he's their 16

and he’s that bad, I’m happy. The desperation continues. If they are struggling in June, will they deal a (pre-draft) top 5 for something? They have holes galore.

by timh815 on Mar 27, 2011 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Trading a very marginal "prospect" for help in 2011 is a good move for the Brewers.

The Brewers have to go for it this year. As bad as Morgan was last year, if he keeps his head straight (which he did before last season) he is an improvement in CF as a platoon with Gomez. I think this is a decent gamble for the Brewers.

For what it is worth, John Sickels doesn’t even list Dykstra in the top 20 prospects. He gets honorable mention in a bad, bad organization.

John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.

What Silva said to the press seemed very odd
Like today, (Hendry said) ‘We don’t know how Cashner is going to do.’ … For me, Cashner is a very good pitcher and he’s going to be great."

If Hendry is telling Silva that he does not have a spot of the 25-man roster, why would Hendry being telling him this about Cashner?

That just doesn’t add up and at first, I have to think that Silva is saying stuff to make trouble.

The only way that statement makes sense from Hendry to Silva, is if he is trying to get Silva to accept the AAA assignment.

The Cubs gave him every opportunity

They were even going to give him a start tomorrow. The Cub organization has always been viewed as player-friendly, maybe even too player friendly. Silva did this to himself and he deserved to be released.

actually by criticizing the new Manager and pitching coach

he expressed his exit….my guess is that locker room attendants were told to make certain all his personal stuff was removed very early this AM, and that he was notified that his meal money and hotel room was terminated as of Noon today and that his agent would receive his cheque at the start of the season….

Dempster might then bring in some disinfectant and spray his locker and bench area, while Woody might bring in a ceremonial boombox and give everyone a hit….

The only reason I think you may be on to something...

… is, if they were going to keep Koyie, they could easily have optioned Castillo by now, and placed MaxRam on the DL. But they haven’t.

He can hit a little bit ...

… had numbers comparable to Robinson Chirinos in the minor leagues. And, he can play a passable 1B.

It's less how good he is

than how bad Hill is. But Ramirez does offer some flexibility, since he can play a couple positions, and is probably a league average or so hitter, and has some (albeit limited) upside. Hill is below average defensively and hits worse than a pitcher.

DEJESUS!!!

will MRam have alot of value to us in a trade eventually?

I’m thinking after reading lots of comments here, there and everywhere, we’re keeping Hill for awhile, Castillo will be sent to the minors so he can play everyday this season—unless Hill or Soto gets injured, if that happens, will MRam have a role with the Cubs?

Someone before the AS Break will pick Silva up...

…I just don’t want it to be a NL Central team. Stuff like this has a way of biting us in the ass.

I know the history of ex Cubs coming back

to bite us in the ass, but in many cases those players had something left in the tank.

I honestly don’t think Silva has much left in the tank and given his attitude and his
seeming inability to take ownership of his failings, which we’ve all beaten to
death here…
If by some miracle someone picks him up I think he’s going to be an albatross
around the neck of any team that makes the bad decision to take him on.

R.I.P. Ronnie Santo... you will be missed...

by Endrick on Mar 27, 2011 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

How could he become an albatross to another team this year?

Any team that wants him can sign him to a league minimum deal since he’s getting paid by both the Cubs and Mariners.

Any deal to bring him in would be the exact opposite of an albatross around the neck.

Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.
