As far as I'm concerned, best of luck to Prior. I'm glad he had a good spring training.

Forgot about him.

And I’m not sure what to make of them sending Prior that far down. I realize 7.2 spring training innings is a ridiculously small sample size, but he struck out 11 batters (walked five) and gave up only one earned run and three hits. Can we assume that this means the Yankees thought he got lucky? Or does this mean they have some hope for him? Color me confused.

I hope he rebounds, too.

But if he pitched so well, why didn’t he end up someplace higher than class A? I’m confused …

by elgato on Mar 29, 2011 11:31 AM CDT reply actions

Good Question

What’s the point of somebody that old being at class A? Look, if he can’t pitch at the AAA level at his age, then the Yankees need to cut him loose. However, I would have thought he would have been placed at AAA based on his ST performance.

2011 - The 103rd time is the charm.

It's strange to me too

Maybe it’s still a confidence thing with Prior. Perhaps the Yankees want to build off the good mojo of ST and have him progress quickly thru the minors. Maybe AA by the end of May, maybe AAA by July.

by jerry morales rules on Mar 29, 2011 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

It is rather confusing as to why they do that

maybe its to not block some of there young arms from getting innings? its an interesting decision no doubt…

by MDavis on Mar 29, 2011 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe we're reading too much into it.

But I wonder if Prior was sent to low A or high A?

by elgato on Mar 29, 2011 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe he was sent to Tampa for the warm weather?

Since he’s coming back from injury, maybe they didn’t want to send him to a cold weather city?

Baseball is back!!

He probably went to Tampa

because that’s where the Yankees have their spring training and they doubtlessly have the best training and medical facilities there. That’s where their extended spring training is as well.

The Yankees use Tampa like the Cubs use Mesa—as their year-round training and rehab center.

I'd guess

maybe they want to build his confindence some more. Slowly move him up through the system and give him a shot later in the season.

Or

I could have just read jerry’s comment above lol

Makes sense to me...

He may be pushing 30, but to make his long-awaited comback, Prior needs to build his confidence by taking a few baby steps through the Yankees’ system. As he moves up to the big club, he also may acquire the humility he lacked in his days as a mere “employee.”

Wouldn't be BCB...

If we didn’t get constant Mark Prior updates. Seriously though who cares about Prior…he left long ago. Wish we could forget the same way!

I wouldn't say the updates have been constant.

And I, for one, am still curious about him — in a dispassionate way.

Why?

At a time he was the embodiment of Cubs baseball. He was beautiful to watch(and I mean pure pitching form) and for a time brought a sense of excitement to this team. Who doesn’t like an overcoming the odds story, I hope he’s one of them.

Unless

The fans were to find out that his injuries were steroid related as some have suggested.

Mark Prior, Rich Hill, Felix Pie....

Dang, we really are bad at this stuff.
Does anyone know what happened to Jerome Williams? I remember him having a pretty good year with us in 05 I think it was, and baseball reference says his last year was 07. Did he retire or something?

Jerome Williams was decent in '05.

In ‘06 he was awful and got waived. He’s been out of baseball since 2009.

This guy really need to get a real job, or a hobby

He’s got the cash, I think he’s just bored and need to do something.

He’s never going to pitch in the major again, so what’s the point?

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Mar 29, 2011 3:26 PM CDT reply actions

I think you're wrong about this

By all accounts his fastball is 90-92 and he still has the ability to throw some of those off speed pitches he was noted for. Prior was excellent last year when he broke in with an independent league and he evidently has progressed this spring. I certainly wouldn’t doubt the ability of a professional athlete he was able to get to the big leagues once, I’m sure he’ll do it again.

ESPN game

Joe Girardi talked about Prior during the Yankees/Tigers game today. He said they wanted Mark to build up strength in the warm weather and to get to the point where he can throw back to back games.

by tom veryzer on Mar 29, 2011 4:13 PM CDT reply actions

I like the sound of that

It sounds like Girardi’s concern is durability. It wouldn’t make much sense putting Prior in a cold weather environment if he’s not ready. If Prior can stay healthy long enough for the weather to warm up we might see him in the big leagues sometime in June or July.

by troutfishin on Mar 29, 2011 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

You know, I really admire the guy's refusal to give up

He’s been through baseball’s equivalent of hell, told numerous times to give up, he’s a flop, bust, whatever, and yet he won’t quit. He’s determined to make it as a major leaguer, and for that I hope he does make it back up to the show again. A lot of people could have taken the paycheck and just lived off it (especially if he was told he had to fall all the way back to single A, a level he never played at in the Cubs organization), but he hasn’t. I really hope Mark gets another shot, maybe (and this is really hollywood-izing) at Wrigley this year. He can get welcomed back to the place that gave him his start.

…and then the Cubs can shell him for 8 runs in an inning, sealing victory for the good guys despite the warm fuzzies at #22’s return.

by leftycub on Mar 29, 2011 10:19 PM CDT reply actions

I would prefer to see Prior pitch...

…the seventh and the eighth in a 0-0 game, strike out 5 and give up the game winning home run with two outs in the eight. I want to see him comeback and be successful, not get released ;)
