Chicago Cubs vs. Kansas City Royals Preview, Friday 3/4, 2:05 CT: Taking Attendance

The attendance -- or lack thereof -- at Cactus League spring training games so far this year is becoming an interesting sub-thread to following the Cubs.

Yesterday, attendance was as follows: the Cubs drew 6,229 -- only about half capacity at Mesa. Other parks in the Cactus League drew the following for day games: Tempe (2,880), Glendale (3,878), Maryvale (2,488), Surprise (3,041), Peoria (3,014) and the new Salt River complex (7,575). A night game between the Dodgers and Reds at Goodyear drew 4,012.

This year's spring training schedule is a week "earlier" than last year's because the regular season schedule starts earlier. I made a comparison the other day that might not have been valid because I was comparing a date that was later in the month in 2010.

So instead, here are the attendance figures for a comparable Thursday a year ago, March 4, 2010: Surprise (7,332); Peoria (6,205); Mesa (7,496); Scottsdale (7,062); Tempe (4,639), and Tucson (5,730).

There is no question in my mind that Cactus League attendance is off -- in some cases, way off. Not one Cubs game at Mesa is sold out, and only two -- the Giants game on March 20 and the White Sox game on March 24 -- are sold out of lawn tickets. In some past years, these games and some others would have been sold out a month ago. This is a story worth watching.

Today's lineup:

RF Fukudome SS Castro 1B Colvin C Soto 3B Moore 2B Baker LF Johnson CF Jackson P Garza

Today, after Matt Garza starts, we should see Alberto Cabrera, John Gaub, Sean Marshall, Jeff Samardzija and Kerry Wood.

Bruce Chen starts for the Royals. He'll be followed by Danny Duffy, Patrick Keating, Jeremy Jeffress, Blaine Hardy, Jesse Chavez and Steven Shell.

In a way.....

…. from what I guess could be a selfish standpoint, I kind of like that there’s less people around. It reminds me of when I first started going to Spring and the crowd was comprised more of real fans instead of frat boys who were just here to party. Granted, fiscally this is not good news for the clubs, but if this keeps up, it will be somewhat refreshing not having to keep one eye out for some drunk and stupid 20 something with a backwards hat and shades and the manners of a cretin who just spewed on the concourse.

Same here

When I moved here in 2000, I never had to worry about scalpers for a frigging ST game. I never bought tickets ahead of time, just on game day at the box office.

You can ask my friends and family, I was hoping that the springs following years that the Cubs sucked would have dropped a bunch off the badwagon.

Once the Cubs started winning again in the 2000’s, HHK became less fun for me. Don’t get me wrong, I still love hanging around with the ususal suspects on the LF berm, but having to worry about getting tickets in advance, the frat boy crap, etc., started to get old. You could also see the prices creeping up to make more $ because of the demand. I have no problem with the Cubs, Mesa, et al making money while they can, but it took away from the lazy, laid back experience that ST used to be.

I have never seen Fukudome not hustle.

But there is only so much that can be said for always running out grounders to second base hard. Defensively, he hustles and plays as good a right field as anyone. It would just be refreshing to see him hit higher than .260.

I noticed this too

This is the same here in Vegas for the SS games. From what I understand the spring training games the Cubs hold here in Vegas sell out quickly. There are still plenty of tickets available for both games. This might also be linked here to the lower tourism numbers Vegas has been seeing, but it also reflects the trend of lower spring training crowds.

seeing Dome in the leadoff spot is beyond depressing

A leadoff hitter who bats .260, doesn’t steal bases and strikes out 100+ times a season when playing FT. Blech. No good alternatives either

by BeltwayCubsFan on Mar 4, 2011 12:22 PM CST reply actions

This isn't 1960 anymore

No, Fukudome doesn’t have game changing speed, but he does EXACTLY what a leadoff guy should do: work counts and get on base. The notion that a leadoff hitter has to hit .300 and steal 50 bases has gone by the wayside. Juan Pierre should have shown us all that a guy that hits .300/.330/.388, even if he has 58 SBs to go along with it, should not be hitting leadoff. He should be hitting 8th.

Except for the 2-3 months he's going to post a ~.260 OBP.

He will be hot as hell for 1-2 months.

He’ll have a few generally mediocre-to-below average months where he’ll walk enough to be serviceable.

And he’ll have at least one month, maybe two, in which he will be completely unusable in any capacity, and one of the worst hitters in the league, (including pitchers).

But aside from that, he’s EXACTLY what we need. :)

It’s the final year of the Dome deal, and I’m fine with him leading off against RHP a lot of the time. I just don’t want him to keep Colvin off the field at all. Dome has no future with this team.

Colvin

If he shows he can at least be servicable at 1B, I envision him being a 2011 verson of DeRo circa 2008. DeRo played 90+ games at 2B, 30+ at 3B, 30+ in RF and 30+ in LF. I think Colvin could get 25 games in LF, 25 games in CF, 60 games in RF, and 30 games at 1B.

by RynoRooter on Mar 4, 2011 1:27 PM CST up reply actions

The marginal difference between Dome and Colvin in RF is worth... what?

I mean, I’m sure it’s quantifiable on some level.

But I don’t see the point. Dome is gone after this season. Colvin is better offensively right now, and will be around for several more seasons.

Are we that concerned about the marginal increase in defensive performance from Colvin (who should be at least average) and Dome (who I keep hearing is very good, but seriously, he’s no Justin Upton out there), that we’d make the offense worse – and potentially substantially worse, and use a short-time veteran over a young, potential key contributor?

Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago

by Al Yellon on Mar 4, 2011 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

It absolutely has value. Just not all that much.

There’s no reason that Colvin can’t be a decent MLB RF. He has posted positive a UZR in RF – something that Fukudome did not do last year.

In fact, Dome posted a -4.4 UZR in RF last year, after posting a -7.6 UZR in CF in 2009.

So that’s 2 straight years of negative UZRs from a player who generates almost all of his value from his glove, and who, frankly, looked kind of crappy in RF last year.

Again, I totally don’t see the point. Even if we say “Dome was a good RF 3 years ago, and as such, is likely to be better than Colvin there now”, why bother? He’s gone next year anyway, and he’s a lousy hitter.

Yeah.. where did that theory come from?

111 ab’s vs lefties and his OBS is 10 pts higher than his respectable .800 on 260 ABs vs righties. You could say he’s unproven vs MLB pitching and have a point but the can’t hit lefties thing makes no sense.

… then he can rotate through OF positions, giving Fukudome, Byrd and Soriano time off, and also occasionally give Pena a break. You’ve essentially them got five players for four positions.

For Chicagoans at least

coming off the Bears in the NFC title game and both the Blackhawks and Bulls playing well, hopefully both playoff-bound as well, I think baseball is going to take a back seat for now considering the low expectations this team has set for itself. How can you get excited and want to dish out tons of money plus make the trek out to AZ to watch that when there’s so much still happening in Chicago?

Keith Law on Marquez Smith
I’ve received a lot of questions about Cubs infielder Marquez Smith, who was Rule 5 eligible but went unselected despite his .314/.374/.584 line in about 300 plate appearances in Class AAA last year. It’s just one game, but I can guess why he didn’t garner much interest or a 40-man spot from Chicago. He took some awful hacks against breaking balls, including one on a 72 mph Little League curveball for a strikeout in his first at bat. He’s a below-average runner, and struggled to make a throw from third base on a soft grounder. That’s not to say he has zero value, but it’s a long list of flaws to steer teams away from him.

Kind of confirms what I’ve heard,.
