Cubs Introduce "Best Buy" Ticket Package
It's pretty obvious that ticket sales are poor for many teams this year...I live in Seattle and got a Groupon for the Mariners today. $60 for a seat in a luxury box with a $10 food voucher. I don't think I've ever seen suite seats sold like that before.
Anyways, the deal is below.
The Cubs have introduced the Best Buy Pack, which includes four tickets to any April or May home game, four Vienna Beef Hot Dogs and four Bud Light, Budweiser or Pepsi fountain beverages starting at just $40. Best Buy Packs may be purchased in different sections within Wrigley Field, subject to ticket availability.
Best Buy Packs start at $40 for Upper Deck Reserved Outfield, or $48 for Upper Deck Reserved Infield during Bronze home games. Terrace Reserved Outfield or Infield Packs start at $56 and $60, respectively, while Upper Deck Box Outfield or Infield start at $84 and $108, respectively. Terrace Box Outfield and Bud Light Bleacher Best Buy Packs start at $88. Prices do not include convenience fees or City of Chicago and Cook County amusement tax.

Wait...
is it 40 bucks for 4 tickets or 40 bucks per ticket? If the former… wow, that’s a great deal (and a sign of how unbelievably desperate the Cubs are). If the latter, meh.
It's basically face value plus about $7 per ticket
… as noted below.

No.
The post is misleading.
Bring the whole family to the ballpark for an exciting game and a great deal! For all April and May games at Wrigley Field, you can purchase the Cubs Best Buy Pack, starting at only $40! Packages include:
Four tickets (available locations and prices below)
Four Vienna hot dogs
Four drinks (Pepsi, Budweiser or Bud Light)
Tickets can be purchased in quantities of 4 through 19 tickets. Each ticket purchased includes one Vienna Hot Dog voucher and one Budweiser or Pepsi voucher.
(Does not include convenience fees or City of Chicago and Cook County amusement tax. Will call only.)

"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I calculated this out by going through the buying process (without actually buying any).
It comes to approximately $7 per ticket over face value. Not a bad deal, I suppose, and at least they are now offering it in more sections than just bleachers.

I don't think it's really a good deal at all.
For most of these game, you can get $10 tickets from StubHub. Beers are $7. Hotdogs $5 (?). So you are giving up $17 dollars or so.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Wait they are tying to sell tickets by offering food packages?
Can’t imagine why someone did not think of that before ( OK I kid by I have been suggesting this in my infamous ticket posts for a while) Like most of the marketing ideas , too little, too late. An act of desperation instead of real planning.

The point being other teams have been doing this for some time
and the TIME to do it is before the season starts, just like the time to offer GOOD packages
in when you start sales not months later when your sales are clearly a disaster.
Why do other teams know this and not the Cubs? The Cubs are hardly the only team offering discounts on dismal sales, but they are the team that is blowing threw high demand/loyal fans faster than any other team.

It's obviously because you've been sharing your ticket selling formula with other teams
and you call yourself a Cubs fan!

I have a new one
Turn the far corner of the Left Field bleachers into one of those all you can eat and drink sections for an extra $10 a ticket. No one sits there anyway ( ducks)

I live in Washington D.C. right now and went to the Nats game tonight for $10
Trust me, the Cubs aren’t the only team having problems. And the Cubs also aren’t the only team offering up last minute deals. Within the last week I have gotten emails from the White Sox, Brewers and Nats offering new special deals.
I hope they keep dropping
These were gifts I got from my wedding Cubs vs. Dodgers in LA – The face for these are like $70. I would never pay that.
Luckily – being in So Cal now I have the minor league team nearby. Frankly, I love these games. Sometimes the imperfection of a young player is more fun to watch then a polished pro. Which is why, on occasion, Ill stop at a High School game.

Face value on Nats tickets are insane
I have a client at the other end of the Metro stop from the Nationals’ park, and so whenever I’m in town for work I think about taking in a game. But their face ticket prices are extraordinarily high (I think we paid $80 for box seats when the Cubs were in town a couple of years ago).
I can’t afford face value for Nats-Marlins, but $10 seats would be a good value.
Now I need a half-smoke.

Really?
I bought Nats tickets for the games in 2009 when they went on sale. They were baseline boxes — maybe 20 rows off the field, a little past 3B. They were $39 each.
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago
Maybe it was $70, but it was high
I know the tickets we had out in LF in that little elevated area of two rows below a party deck (actually really good seats) were in the high 30s.
It was still a good series – nothing like enjoying a sweep on the road!

its not a new idea by you or anyone else
for three years the Texas Stars have been doing that for week day games,
$44 for
4 tickets
4 hot dogs
4 sodas
and i am sure other minor league teams have been doing similar for long before the Stars
Chronologically inept since 2060
Q: Why did Chuck Norris cross the road?
A: Ditka
Ditka's mustache can block a Chuck Norris round house
A lot of minor AND major league teams do this.

I am going to a game
in Rancho Cucamonga on June 1st. For 4 legged friend night. $8 tickets.

Of course it isn't a new idea
My whole point was why the Cubs did not do this BEFORE the season started as anyone with half a brain knew their tickets sales where in trouble. When people were busy asking me last year what I would do to help sales this was near the top of my list..

Because this is to supplant peopleminto saying,
“well, this is a good deal, I guess I’ll do it.”
People that were buying tickets when they first went out were going to buy them whether or not they got a free hotdog.

Bronze games in the 500s are an absolute steal.
A hot dog and beer alone would be $11.75. For $10, you get admission AND all that. Great deal if you don’t care where you sit.
Even Silver games in the 200s, you basically pay full price for a ticket and get a free hot dog and beer. So I ask… where are my free hot dogs and beers for April and May?
Oops, forgot about tax.
After tax, it’s about $6 over face for a Silver game in the 200s. OK. Well there’s your beer. So basically you get a free hot dog. lol. Lame.
Like I said.
Approximately $7 per ticket over face, maybe a little more or less depending on the game and the section.

Not only every other sports ticket...
… but tickets for every other kind of entertainment that has this kind of tax included in the price. NO ONE does this except the Cubs.

Hey - you're the one that keeps wanting the Cubs to think out of the box...
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
It should be noted that at first no one could really figure
out why the Cubs did this, it was confusing and certainly annoyed buyers. When the Cubs asked the state to use the tax to pay for Wrigley renovations, Crane Kenney admitted that was why the tax was seperated. The Cubs basically want the tax back and in typical bad planning fashion they thought separating it, would highlight the amount and assist them in this plan which of course totally backfired, upset the ticket buying fans and the general public and politicians pounded the idea of using tax dollars for Wrigley, so basically a lose, lose.

What?
It should be noted that at first no one could really figure out why the Cubs did this…
Really? You don’t know? Come on, that’s rhetorical statement, right?
Sales are slow, fannies in the seats are down as a % of sales, re-sale sites show HUGE discounts. Cubs get no monies from SH re-sales. Only way to compete with that is to make these sorts of offers.
Just win the next game...!
No, you misinterpret her statement.
She was stating that no one could figure out why the Cubs split out the entertainment tax, when literally NO other outfit that has to charge such a tax does so.
It was eventually revealed that the reason was, as Jessica stated, because they wanted this used for Wrigley renovations.

Another
marketing fail by the new Cubs regime.
If I was a billionaire, I would hire a better marketing department.
DEJESUS!!!
Agreed
John McDonough and Jay Blunk were marketing geniuses. The Cubs marketing department since they left has been dismal.
Nope, wrong there too
You’re equating their leaving to the Cubs issues in a vacuum.
Look at when they left (late 2007 for McD) and everything that has transpired since. Not to mention the tanking of the economy.
Just win the next game...!
This in of itself may not be a failure
You cannot deem it failure until the sales and games have been played out.

There's only a few teams I bet in MLB that don't do this.
The bottom feeders of NFL attendance do stuff like this and I’m sure you can find it in the NBA and NHL. I don’t think this is desperate, it’s normal. Yes, it’s indicative of their ticket sales when they decide to roll out stuff like this during the season, but it’s not out of the ordinary. We’re just more used to begging scalpers for tickets 2x instead of 3x than actually going online and looking for a deal that gives us the most bang for our buck. Look around the teams in the league and see the deals you can get that maybe the Cubs marketing department has decided to implement.
In another gear, I’ve been to this blog and read comments bashing the Cubs for bringing in concerts, football games, possible soccer games, and other non-baseball events. These comments ignore the fact that they bring in additional revenue for the team. Look at this deal: they’re filling up seats no one is using and eating food and drink that may have otherwise found itself to the dumpster after the game. There’s this other nugget too: it’s not just the “Chicago Cubs Family Four-Pack,” they threw on a corporate sponsor onto it. That’s even more revenue and for the haters of the special events at Wrigley, that’s baseball revenue. Not football or concert revenue like people were belly aching before about turning Wrigley into something it’s not, but revenue generated by its true tenant, the baseball team.
"You just don't know understand how frustrating this is"- Kevin Borseth
The revenue the Cubs get for football and concerts is baseball revenue, too.
Whatever doesn’t go to the participants goes to the Cubs.
Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago
I don't know how to phrase it.
It seemed like people weren’t crazy about the extracurricular (non-baseball activities) going on at the ballpark the last few season, despite it being money that goes to the Cubs.
"You just don't know understand how frustrating this is"- Kevin Borseth
Yeah, it does seem that way.
I’m not sure why.

The Brewers do a ton of this type of stuff.
Many if not most Mon-Thu games have some sort of promotion that is essentially “buy one admission from a sponsor, get a 500 level ticket free.” The casino, the zoo, the Harley museum, something for Summerfest.
If I recall, the zoo one was $18 for a 500-level seat and an adult admission to the Zoo. The casino one was a $25 dining card and a 500-level seat for $25. And so on.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

Instead of attempting to come up with clever ticket/meal packages to get people to come to Wrigley
Why don’t they just go to the root of the problem as to why people aren’t coming in the first place? A few years ago people were willing to pay the price to come watch the Cubs play, but during the last few seasons people aren’t interested anymore.
Say what you want to say about the bad economy, but it comes down to this: bad management, horrible offseason moves, bad treatment of Cubs legends (Sandberg), and lazy play by players (which was accepted). It also doesn’t help that some of the ushers are extremely rude. Combined with that, the Cubs don’t seem to be in a big hurry to change things.
If Ricketts would have come in, replaced the front office staff, replaced Piniella with Sandberg, and even had a team led by people like Brett Jackson, Chris Archer, Tyler Colvin, and company then people would come out to watch players try hard every day. But like I said, there’s no hurry to change things so people are not going to part with their hard earned money to attend these games.
Hey, the Dodgers only drew 31000 on Saturday night.
Why all the complaining? Every team is suffering from this economy. why pick on the Cubs?
I can’t blame them for trying to bring people into the park. Just because Doogie can’t sell her extra tickets doesn’t deserve threads everyday.
Here's the issue with them "trying to bring people in"
It’s not like the fans are getting a big discount or anything. They are paying more money for the ticket to cover some of the costs of the food and beer. If you really wanted a deal, here’s 4 face value tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 beers for the price of 4 face value tickets.

Duh! Capital D.U.H.
Box office sales are down, attendance is down (yeah, 36.5k last night, right….), tickets are nearly given away. They have to try to do something.
I got worse things to deal with on the sporting front, like going to United Centre tonight to see my last home ’Hawks game of the season….In the very near future, the ’Hawks will become the Reigning Stanley Cup Champions.
