Would You Take Mark DeRosa Back?
This MLBTR post suggests that DeRo is trade bait. He could certainly help, being a RH hitter off the bench, able to play multiple positions. Yes, I know this is another "put the band back together" idea. What do you think?

why not?
on the cheap of course.with pena and colvin sucking up the landscape we could use another hitter.and al im betting you just opened up a huge can of worms. but really where would derosa get any playing time?
Yeah, I know I opened a can of worms.
Most likely, if the Cubs picked up DeRosa, that would mean the release of Reed Johnson.

He would be better than anything else we have on the bench.

at what cost?
on three fronts:
- salary we’d have to assume
- players we’d have to give up in trade
- whose spot does he take on the 25
While this year could still turn out to be marginally successful, I’d put the chances at the postseason at less than 5% and I think I’m being generous. So there’s no way I’m viewing a DeRo acquisition as being a missing piece of the puzzle for this year.
Now, if we’re just swapping out the last spot on the bench, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt, but no way do I give up anything that could possibly help us in 2012 and beyond.

I’d have to see a specific trade suggestion to say for sure. But my gut reaction is also no. DeRo would likely make so little difference in the ultimate fate of this team that there’s little to no sense in giving up anyone for him. Maybe if the Giants release him, you could swap him out for Reed Johnson. Wouldn’t that be amusing.

At what spot is he a clear upgrade?
If I thought he would be a clear improvement over the two headed monster at 2nd, or the Colvin/Fukudome platoon, then it would be worth exploring, but he’s not. Unless the Cubs could work out some sort of deal to move Fukudome (and cash) for DeRosa, I don’t see how it makes the team better. A DeRosa/Colvin platoon might be worthwhile in right. It would also be nice to have additional backup at the corner infield positions.
He's pretty big money now
I like DeRo as much as the next guy, but he’s 36, he’s $6 million and he hasn’t really been all that great since he left the Cubs.
2008 was his career year; and if the Cubs made a move for anyone with the exact same recent career and a name other than “Mark DeRosa”, people would be baying for Hendry’s blood (again).

No, but I know someone who can.
And the person I was thinking of had a homer and triple yesterday.

And who still isn't a good defensive catcher.

The Cubs are undefeated with Hill starting this year.
True story. 2-0.

and at this point
it appears that Quade is going to use him properly so his intagibles outweigh his poor BA

Right.
If he starts two of every 16 games or so, that means 20-25 starts. I think we can live with that.

I'd take him in a heartbeat...but back on the Cubs, not so much...

Why?
So we can watch him make his tearful goodbyes to his Giant teammates on Showtime’s “The Franchise.”
If we’re gonna stink, we might as well get a bit part in a documentary for it.
Love DeRo, but no.
I don’t see the point with this team.
No, this doesn't make sense
De Witt, struggling mightily still has more upside and is cheaper. I’d also rather have Johnson coming off the bench who also is cheaper.

eh
he’d become the fifth outfielder? I suppose it might give us depth if Rami gets traded…
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
I'm holding out for the prize re-aquisition...

I don't want to take AB's away from Barney, Colvin, even DeWitt
Let’s see these guys play. As others have said, we’re not going to the world series this year.
Can he replace Judd Sirott?
DeRosa would be much better at pre- and post-game, and might say something useful sitting in the booth during the 5th inning.
On the field, is he really going to be any better than Augie Ojeda? I understand the idea of cutting Reed Johnson or send DeWitt back to AAA, but DeRosa is not particularly an upgrade. And to take on more money?
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??
Hey, it might get some more people in the seats.
This actually makes too MUCH sense. I’d stick him at 2B and let him play in place of Barney. Barney then becomes your utility infielder, and then you designate Blake DeWitt for assignment.
Hey, plus no one is wearing his #7 so he could have it right back.
After Hendry said that we had no money to spend and had to have a special meeting to pay Wood $1.5 MILLION (a steal), he “found” $6 million to pay Garza after that dumb trade.
I’d say that we can “find some more money” for DeRosa, or we can ask the Giants to do what we always do—pay most of their salary. It’s the least they can do for giving us NOTHING for Fontenot.
Rudy Jaramillo is wearing #7.
Also, Barney’s doing a good job. I was looking for a super utility guy.

Isn't Jeff Baker a younger version of DeRosa?
RH hitter who plays a few positions, 5 years younger than DeRosa.
Correct....I am in favor of this, though I think it would be at the expense of Johnson. Though I would rather get rid of DeWitt.
Especially if the Giants would take some of the salary.
DeWitt is safe as long as Hendry is trying to save face from the Lilly trade.
Very slow...It takes several tries to reply, but the actions and up functions work fine.
But it is probably me……though nothing else is acting up…I just don’t know!!!
Odd.
I’m not having any issues and I haven’t heard from anyone else.

Suffice it to say
I’m in the “no” camp on this one.

It'd be a great move in light of the impending
Rami annual injury due in the next few weeks.
Just win the next game...!
If you can get him at a cheaper cost then it might work
He will probably be a better hitter than dewitt and Johnson. Also you can play him anywhere.
Na
If he were DFAd maybe but not in trade. Unless as stated above, they would straight up for DeWitt. I am liking Barney and I like Baker as a backup. Is Baker not the same as DeRosa?
Kwa...Ki...Sur...Pee...Nee...Ku?
At this point I don't think that DeRo would help the Cubs.
I don’t think he can play seven days a week because I think his wrist would become sore. That would mean that the five-day-a-week upgrade he would give you at 2B (he is swinging well right now and had an excellent ST) would be negated by having him on the roster — but unavailable — the other two days.
DeRo can seriously help a contender (probably the Braves, Twins, Phillies, or Yankees) as a four-day-a-week super-utility guy, but I don’t think the Cubs have enough shot at contending in 2011 to have DeRo take at-bats away from younger guys. The Cubs have to figure out who will play 2B in 2012 and if Tyler Colvin is an everyday player.
The only thing that he could really help with would be as a steadying influence for Starlin Castro — veteran 2B (especially those with SS experience) can help young SSs with the mental part of the game. Would that be worth paying him $6M and giving up something in a trade?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
This makes sense.
It’s two years too late at this point, and the roster is (or should be) in transition to another place.
If he could start the occasional game at 2B/3B/OF, it could probably improve the team. It would definitely mean our #1 pinch hitter was dramatically improved every day.
But if the net is “Darwin Barney/Tyler Colvin plays less”, then I guess I don’t see it.
