So, i've been able to watch bits and pieces of the first few games. I have to say, I see a few positive things here. Granted, we are not the odds on favorite here, but I think there is improvement.
Let me say it was 80 degrees here yesterday, so after the 4th inning i was on my bike; however, i DVR'd the game and caught the ugly end.
First, Starlin is going to be good (and already is - just hope he improves). I like him at leadoff. Barney is not bad either. Time will tell if he is the real deal, but we've got a legit platoon in my opinion with him and Baker.
Now, execution has always been the achilles heel of the Cubs since i've been a fan (10+ years). although we gave it up yesterday, i like the execution and in the first 3 games that we're in it till the end.
Byrd, however you feel about the guy, is a winner. Pena looks to be a flat out player and a "winner". That damn bunt was beautiful. I've wondered why more "shift" guys don't do that. I know he was trying to bust the shift, but it's SO FREAKING GOOD TO SEE A CUB THAT CAN DROP A DAMN BUNT!!!!! I don't think Pena will lead the team in sac bunts, but damn, i love the execution! love it!
If Sori can stay healthy and contribute, we've got one hell of a 7 hole hitter. Colvin at 8 is not too shabby either. We have a legit rotation.
The Riot is gone, but what i like is that i think we have a lot of Riot attitudes that play a little better than he did. And Quade should probably get his due for some of that.
i know it's only 3 game in and we're 1-2, but I see dramatic improvement in these guys.
I used to think of the Cubs in relation to an old Jimmy Buffett song - "The Weather is here, wish you were beautiful". This year may be different. I sure hope so.
