Theriot mocks St. Louis fans as jorts, tanks, and timberlands wearing rednecks. Now both fan bases will dislike Theriot.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that when statements like this are made

the assumption should ALWAYS be that the rest of the statement is “compared to other major leaguers”

We all get he’s pretty good at baseball to make it to the bigs. He’s become a pretty bad major leaguer over the last few years.

I guess I'm just a worrier, that's why my friends call me whiskers

That's true.

I just don’t care for the phrase “he’s bad at baseball” or “he’s not very good at baseball”.

It’s condescending and unnecessary.

It IS unnecessary.

You can make statistical comparisons. “Bad at baseball” is condescending. I don’t like seeing it here.

I don't know, he didn't exactly say anything out of line here.

I think the fans just need to not take everything so seriously.

This^^^

Thank you for injecting some common sense.

Wrong

Theriot is a player of marginal talent who runs his mouth off too much. He’s dissed two fanbases. I stand by my statement: someone should tell him to just stop talking and play baseball.

Wrong?

Look Al, I can see how he rubs people the wrong way, especially considering that he’s a mediocre player. But don’t let a few misguided statements get your panties all in a bunch. At the end of the day, it’s not a big deal. At least give the dude some credit for making fun of the Cardinals as well. If anything you should be neutral. You and several others act like he ran over your cat or something.

Poor Mister Boots!

And he refuses to even acknowledge it happened, but that little tuft of black and white fur is still stuck to his bumper!

I’ll never forgive him. Never.

Ran over my cat?

Notwithstanding the fact that I don’t have a cat, I just said he needs to keep his mouth shut. He’s not adding anything to baseball discussion by dissing fans of both a team he used to play for AND a team he now plays for.

I can’t imagine Cardinals fans liked his statement very much.

And now I’m done.

A "joke"?

You have an odd sense of humor. Apparently, so does Theriot.

“To me, man, that’s just so incredibly blown out of proportion it’s ridiculous,” he said. “It’s the team you play for. I’m a Cardinal. I was a Cub and now I’m a Cardinal. I love St. Louis and I love the Cardinals.”

“I would hope that they would give a good reception,” he said before the game. “Blood, sweat and tears at this place for five years, and the Minor Leagues coming up, starting in ‘01. I’ve said this a million times: These fans here understand baseball and they appreciate effort and all that stuff. And that’s one of the reasons I loved Chicago.”

Theriot’s comments about it.

He’s right, you’re blowing his comments out of proportion.

by lj121711 on May 11, 2011 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Ahhh sensibility...

Using the whole story instead of just bits and pieces is a beautiful thing. Theriot did some stupid things on and off the baseball field, but he’s still a human being and he DID work hard while in Chicago. Give him credit where credit is due.

And yes Al, the phrase “ran over your cat” is commonly used as a joke. I apologize if you took offense to it.

by renocubfan on May 11, 2011 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions

I know the "cat" part was a joke.

If Theriot was joking, he picked the wrong place and forum to do it.

He did work hard and for at least one year (2008), got the most out of his talent. Since then, not so much. I would not be surprised if this is his last year in the major leagues.

Check out Chicago sports coverage at SB Nation Chicago

by Al Yellon on May 11, 2011 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

I doubt it's his last year. lol

He’s more than good enough to play off the bench for a few years after this one. Assuming some team doesn’t want him starting.

But I get it, you’re not a fan. I wasn’t exactly happy with him as a player, but I can’t say he’s not a good guy otherwise.

by lj121711 on May 11, 2011 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Want to bet on this one?
I would not be surprised if this is his last year in the major leagues.

That’s a ridiculous statement. Theriot is not very good, but he adequately plays a position where some of his peers include Ronny Cedeno, Yuniesky Bettancort, and Alcides Escobar. Those guys are everyday starters for their teams. I’d much rather trot Theriot out there than any of them.

by Wreckard on May 11, 2011 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Theriot will be 32 in December.

That’s considerably older — and more expensive — than any of the three players you mention. I’d rather have any of them than a 32-year-old Theriot.

And I'd still like to hear some explaination

of why on earth you think Ronny Cedeno, or Bettancort would be better than Theriot. Ever.

by lj121711 on May 11, 2011 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll give you Cedeno.

Betancourt & Theriot = a wash. I’d still not want a 32-year-old Theriot on my team next year.

I'm not so sure those two are a wash but whatever......

The point is, Theriot will be in the majors next year.

This^

I had a few problems with the way he played. But overall he seemed like a good enough guy. He had a few good years and helped the Cubs win 2 division titles. I can’t exactly hate the guy.

One more of his quotes for good measure.

So exactly what is the “right side?”

“I was a Cubbie, now I’m a Cardinal. What do you want me to say?” he asked. "I guess there’s no real right or wrong answer, but now I’m a Cardinal and I stand by what I said.

“It’s the right side of the rivalry for me now. You can’t say you wish you were on the other side, that’s not right.”

by lj121711 on May 11, 2011 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Now that he's not on our team

I say let him talk all he wants. Let him stick his foot in his mouth and get his fans (if he has any anymore) angry with him. Maybe all the booing will get him to play worse.

Fasten those seat belts...

Theriot's family was at the game last night.

Pat Hughes mentioned that Theriot brought his parents and wife to the game last night. I wonder if he was expecting a warmer reception from the fans?

by shadyglennbeckert on May 11, 2011 9:51 AM CDT reply actions

Hmmm...

makes me wonder now if the strong booing he got last night was from both sides. We did have a lot of Cardinal fans in our section.

Fasten those seat belts...

To me this reads like

Theriot realized he made a stupid mistake saying what he did and is now trying to make light of it.

Fasten those seat belts...

by katie casey on May 11, 2011 11:00 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe.

But again, I think he chose the wrong forum and method for doing it. Just keeping his mouth shut and playing baseball would work better.

by katie casey on May 11, 2011 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

That's a ridiculous attitude.

Sports are entertainment. We like hearing athletes talk because it adds drama and helps create a narrative. Theriot getting the sac fly down to take the lead in the 7th was made more fun and dramatic by the fact that he was a former Cub getting booed as he came to the plate.

I’m not sure why you’re being such a stick in the mud about this one. It’s an odd thing to get so upset about. Maybe you should get a cat.

by Wreckard on May 11, 2011 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess.

I just roll my eyes when athletes say stuff that dume. Sure, sports are entertainment. I prefer my entertainment on the field.

And no, I’m not getting a cat.

I’ll bet it gets at least 100 followers.

People take things way too seriously. Theriot was laughing during the interview about it and Waddle & Silvy were kinda goading him to get him to say it.

I thought it was funny

I just checked the cards SB site

And the Theriot man-without-a-fan-base issue is getting a lot less play on the cards site than here. A quick scan of the comments from yesterday’s pre-game thread showed more amusement than anything else.

Then again, that sites looks pretty calm compared to BCB.
