Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants Preview, Friday 5/13, 1:20 CT: Triskaidekaphobia
The Giants owe the Cubs a big fat thank you for their World Series championship.
Why is this? Because in the final two weeks of the 2010 regular season, the Giants came into Wrigley Field and shut out a hot Cubs team twice (yes, "hot" -- the Cubs had won eight of their last nine and six in a row coming into that homestand on September 21). Then, the Cubs went into San Diego the following week and defeated the Padres three out of four, pretty much knocking the Padres out of playoff contention.
You're welcome, San Francisco. Now could you return the favor this weekend?
Oh, and that big word at the end of the headline? It means (loosely) "fear of the number 13". Today is Friday the 13th. Maybe that'll bring some luck to the Cubs. They'll need it against a Giants team that is riding a six-game winning streak and has allowed only 10 runs in the six games. Just for the record, the last time the Cubs won a game on Friday the 13th (a date that falls quite infrequently during the baseball season) was almost four years ago, when they defeated the Astros at Wrigley Field on Friday, June 13, 2007. (There was no Cubs game on a Friday the 13th in 2008 or 2009 and they lost to the Cardinals 6-3 on Friday, August 13, 2010.)
Cubs lineup:
Castro ss, Barney 2b, Byrd cf, Baker 3b, Soriano lf, Johnson rf, Pena 1b, Hill c, Dempster p
Hill? I don't get it.
Giants lineup:
Torres cf, Sanchez 2b, Huff 1b, Posey c, Schierholtz rf, Ross lf, Fontenot ss, Tejada 3b, Bumgarner p

Today's pitching matchup happened as one of those three games at Wrigley Field last September; it was Madison Bumgarner's first ever start against the Cubs. Bumgarner threw seven shutout innings. Dempster... didn't. He gave up nine runs in less than two innings. That isn't good. Let's hope for a reversal today; in hindsight, maybe that was a precursor of Dempster's struggles this season. Here's the boxscore from that game, if you can stand it.
The biggest problem for Dempster this year has been allowing home runs -- 10 of them in only 45 innings. Fortunately, the Giants are having almost as much trouble hitting them as the Cubs are -- they've hit 29 as a team (the Cubs have 28) and the team leader is Pat Burrell with five (tied with Pablo Sandoval, who is on the DL).
Today's game is on CSN Chicago and CSN Bay Area. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

Today's first pitch thread will be up at 1:15 p.m. CDT and the overflow threads will post at 2:15 pm, 3:15 pm and 4 pm CDT. If you need more overflows due to extra innings or rain delays, post them in the fanshot section.

Hill
I would assume he’s starting for the “veteran mojo” angle, in hopes of getting Dempster back on track.
At least we have a feared 3-4 hitter combo today.

And Byrd helped the NL win the AS Game, giving the Giants home field advantange for the WS.

so does that mean
we actually won the WS last year???

I know Pena has struggled ..

The only reason I can see them starting Koyie....
Is because Castillo looked completely clueless at the plate yesterday.
What the hell difference does that make?

maybe not reading so much into this,

This is just a guess
But I think part of Coleman’s struggles was a game not well called, which I’m guessing is something Koyie does pretty well.
We'll all miss you Ron.
Coleman's problem is he doesn't have the talent to get squeezed like he was yesterday.
Nothing to do with how the game was called, most likely.
He is strugglign to throw strikes
and when he does, hitters just tattoo him. He’s not a major league pitcher right now.
Yea, his location has to be spot on to be effective
And right now it’s not. He’s shown he can a couple times, just gotta be more consistent. It will be interesting to see how Doug Davis does, and then when Randy is back, which is sent down.
We'll all miss you Ron.
I didn't think he was so bad
He wasn’t getting any calls on the borders, and then he had to come in. When he has to come in, he gets hammered. That’s going to happen whether his stuff is on or not.

Bumgarner looks so happy in that photo....and confident!
Every day I look at this lineup I’m fooled thinking OK, top of the lineup is going to get on, then I look in the middle and remember it will be pure luck if we get hits in the 3-4 spot.

We’re still only 2 days into the “Castillo Era”. Hill has one day now, Castillo has one. I’m willing to see what happens. I won’t be surprised either way it goes.
We'll all miss you Ron.
Considering the comments from Quade
regarding Beef getting the start because he caught for Casey in the minors, kinda leads me to believe that we’ll be seeing more Hill than Beef. Honestly though, who the hell knows.

by Craig in South Bend on May 13, 2011 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Exactly, I don't know
I’d like to see Castillo play, but on the other hand, Koyie is the backup, so technically, he should get more starts. I’m willing to see what happens, and I doubt no matter who is catching between those two it will make a huge difference.
We'll all miss you Ron.
Actually
Hill shouldn’t get more starts because he’s quite possibly the worst player at this level. Just because he’s had A single or A double or A triple doesn’t me he should be getting the nod constantly. And if he is, then the pitcher really should bat ahead of him. Only if Beef catches for a few starts and shows he has no clue what pitches to call for should Hill get more starts.

by Craig in South Bend on May 13, 2011 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree, that's why I said "technically"
your backup would get more starts. I’d like to see Beef and see what he can do as well. I’m sure Beef will definitely catch any Doug Davis and Casey Coleman starts that may be left. And that’s probably why Koyie is starting today, Beef caught yesterday, and he’s definitely catching tomorrow (I would guess) so he gets a break today since it’s sort of a platoon.
We'll all miss you Ron.
You may not like him
but the pitchers love him and I have no problem with him getting a majority of the starts. Beef bats better but I am not convinced he is a better catcher.

I didn't know the pitchers liked him
I am a catcher as well, and that is a very underrated aspect, that is important if the pitchers like him.
We'll all miss you Ron.
Castillo started the season on the DL
and the injury with his hand won’t go away all year. His hitting numbers are seriously down this year. But I’m still looking for evidence that the pitchers liking Hill makes him more valuable as a starter. I’m sure if asked, all the pitchers would say they liked Castillo also.
If a quality pitching start is 3 runs and 6 innings, then a quality hitting day is 1 for 4.

It's funny how Friday the 13th
always falls on a Friday. Just one of those unexplainable coincidences I guess.
Quade just baffles the hell outta me. I could see using a Hill/Beef platoon, but, being Bumgarner is a lefty…well, I don’t get it. Quade is losing alot of the support he had when he got this job. His decisions are questionable to say the least.
I've come to the conclusion that the two most important things in life are good friends and a good bullpen. ~Bob Lemon, 1981
Sugar coat it all you want...
…there’s NO reason Hill plays before Beef against a LH pitcher. Maybe it works the other way… If this team had a good manager, it probably would work out alot better.
I've come to the conclusion that the two most important things in life are good friends and a good bullpen. ~Bob Lemon, 1981
Managers decisions just don't matter that much. You can pretend they do all you want.
The bottom line is the players need to get the job done. If a manager is given a below average roster, guess what, the team is going to be below average. Quade is not the problem.
If the players he was using would actually get the job done it would be different.
Managers just dont matter that much. Period.
He's not THE problem...
but he’s assuredly A problem.
