Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds Preview, Monday 5/16, 6:10 CT: The Two-Game Series

Players are not fond of two-game series, especially on the road. They don't get much time to unpack before they have to re-pack, and in this case it's not that short a flight to their next stop -- Miami -- before yet another two-game series and another moderate-length flight (to Boston). The entire road trip will be played at night -- unusual for this time of year -- in fact, the Cubs have nine consecutive night games before they'll finally play again under sunshine on Thursday, May 26.

It does, at least, appear that the Cubs have at last outrun the rain; the Cincinnati forecast calls for a chance of light showers, but current radars show nothing anywhere near southwest Ohio.

In case you care, the sad MLB saga of Milton Bradley is likely over. The Mariners gave him his unconditional release today.

Finally, Tom Ricketts spoke to Ed Sherman at Crain's and had these interesting remarks about the lack of ticket sales:

Our ticket prices did not go up this year. This might be an issue from years past. For our season ticket holders, the average price did not go up. It was flat. We did juggle the pricing and added more premium games. But we took those dollars and subsidized 70% of our least expensive tickets. We increased the amount of our low-priced tickets.

I can't stand it when I hear someone say they can't afford to go to a game. It might be hard to get tickets for a Yankees or Sox game, but there's no reason why they can't afford to go another game. We want to get more fans in the park.

I'll let you all comment on that one. I've already written quite a bit about this topic.

Cubs lineup:

Carlos Zambrano did not start last weekend at Wrigley against the Reds; his last start against them was April 10, 2010, one of his better outings before his banishment to the bullpen. Current Reds are hitting .267 (52-for-195) against Z, the best of whom is Edgar Renteria (.382, 13-for-34, seven walks). Big Z has won five straight starts at GABP, dating back to July 29, 2007.

Homer Bailey has made two starts for the Reds this year since returning from the DL on May 5. He, too, missed the recent weekend series. In four games against him in his career, the Cubs have pounded him for a 7.65 ERA and 13 walks in 20 innings. Current Cubs are 11-for-39 (.282) against Bailey with three... homers, one by Marlon Byrd, one by Alfonso Soriano, and one from Starlin Castro -- that Castro homer was in his first major league at-bat last May 7 in Cincinnati. Let's hope for another one tonight.

Today's game is the fourth of the year on WCIU. There are only two more. If you have EI and are outside the blackout areas, you should be able to get the FSN Ohio feed. Here is the complete MLB.com Mediacenter for today.

I didn't...

This year, but I was thinking more about it and I’m wondering if my logic is flawed.

Here is why I didn’t want to buy tickets this year: I didn’t want to support the team financially until they proved they could win for me.

But, as a fan, don’t I have some sort of stake in how the cubs do? Shouldn’t I buy my tickets so that the Cubs can generate the revenue to get better players and do cool things with Wrigley so that other people want to come?

Am I not doing my job as a fan of the Cubs by not buying tickets?

I too swore off giving this team any $ since the end of the season last year when Lou quit.

It they’re going to run the team like the Pirates…then they can cut their payroll to match for all I care…the $ they’ve spent over the last 8 years has amounted to a dry popcorn fart.

Three things really suck

First, two game series suck. Not having the game on TV sucks…no WCIU where I am. Third, ticket prices for those of is who have to travel long distances for weekend game at Wrigley get gouged on the summer premium game ticket prices. I will be going to two other parks for less money than another trip to wrigley. It’s always the money Tom.

If we win tonight that won’t suck. Just so you know I’m not negative.

Pittsburgh series July 8-10

The Pirates rarely if ever sell out, even against the Cubs. A few years ago they tried to get locals to come out with a Roberto Clemente figurine night, which made me very happy as Clemente was my favorite player ever (yes, ahead of any Cub).

Pena

I kniow he’s scuffling, but I’d like to see him hit 4th for a while, if only because he’d at least take a few pitches with men on base. I believe this is the main reason this team does not hit with men on. Most pitchers facing a hitter with bases empty will try to get ahead with a FB down the middle. Hence, these guys get quite a few hits this way. However, when men are in scoring position, the pitcher rarely starts a hitter out with a strike, but we chase anyway. Does any of this make sense?

He’d know that those are the games people want to see. Has he ever seen home games against teams like the White Sox or Cardinals, or tried to buy tickets to those? If so, he’d know how hot a ticket those are.

Complaining to the reporter that they’re not filling the stadium with increasingly lackluster play against teams like the Pirates shows that he doesn’t understand it. You can only hose the fan so much before the fan stops coming.

I get the point he’s making — there are some better priced games if you don’t want premium days or opponents — but he sounds petulant and childish here. Not acknowledging that the Cubs are an inferior product to what they were two years ago when fans and that the fans have to pay more to see them play against better opponents is, well, very discouraging.

He could have said a few other things (the weather has been bad, the team has underperformed, etc.). But to say "I can’t stand when people say … " makes him look childish and petulant. It sounds like he’s blaming people for being ignorant or cheap!

I’ll grant you that Ricketts looked out of touch and in over his head with the state assistance request, and that the request makes this look worse. But I wonder if we’re reading too much into this — that this comment is a 5 on a scale of one to 10 and not an 11.

On the other hand though, a comment like this makes me think this guy really doesn’t understand the product he’s selling. Having read all these comments....

… I will say this: it’s really clear that the policies instituted over the last year or so have alienated a lot of people. Having met Tom Ricketts personally, I do not believe he set out to do that.

Having said that, it’s clear that he’s going to have to make changes or the fanbase is going to desert this team. From the ticket pricing to refusal to allow exchanges for rainouts, these policies are 100% not fan friendly.

He has specifically told me he wants to be fan-friendly. It’s time to show that, not just say it.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Can he be wearing bunny slippers in my version of this vision?

My opinion on attendance

In my 50 plus years as a Cub fan there has always been a draw for me. Starting with Ernie, Santo, Williams, Sandberg, Dawson, Kingman, Sosa, etc. Speaking just for me this is really the first year when there was no one exciting to watch. Even when we were losing in the 50’s, then the 60’s I watched and attended the games. Bleachers by the way were considered last resort seats and were $2.00 per ticket. Once again my opinion, but at least someone on the team was exciting and because of that I watched. I find no one on the cubs exciting to watch now. I was surprised to see that it costs $64.00 for a bleacher seat. To me that’s alot of money. That means I’ll never attend another game. That kind of money for one ticket is just not in my budget.

Aw crap....

I live in Southern Illinois and I’m in the blackout area…no game for me tonight :( Of course, I could watch the Deadbirds on ESPN….ewww

So do I

He may be a great one to watch in the future, but not now. There’s just no one the Cubs who generates that kind of interest to me.

Wow...

what an unbelievably stupid thing for Ricketts to say. Just, wow. Is he really the brightest sibling of the bunch? Surely one of the others isn’t stupid enough to actually publicly say things like this. They might want to rethink Tom being the face/spokesman of the group.

I dont think Ricketts is out of touch

The price of polo pony food is out of sight and yacht fuel is through the roof. And Cub fans are bitching about a few hundred bucks to watch this surefire pennant contender. We should all fall in line and behave!

AGAIN

AGAIN OVERREATING TO COMMENTS.

And again we have the usual with for the circus clown Cuban to own the team with absolutely no evidence he would be any better,

IT’s been 2 freaking years!

I wish I could be MArk Cuban. To get all this undeserved love from people who want to see a clown in the stands in their owner.

Nothing happens unless it's first a dream

and yet somehow you have all this evidence that Cuban would be worse as an owner.

How do you do it, oh puckishcubsfan? How do you do it…

What more evidence do you need?
