Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Preview, Sunday 5/29, 1:20 CT

I have been racking my brains all morning for something, anything positive to write about this team and today's game.

Gotta be honest. Right now, I got nothin'. All the Cubs can do is salvage one game out of this series.

Oh, and guess what? For more good news, it's going to rain again today, possibly with high winds, heavy downpours and hail.

Cubs lineup:

Fukudome rf, Barney 2b, Castro ss, Ramirez 3b, Pena 1b, Soriano lf, Campana cf, Hill c, Dempster p

Pirates lineup:

Tabata lf, Jones rf, McCutchen cf, Walker 2b, Overbay 1b, Doumit c, Wood 3b, Cedeno ss, Karstens p

After a terrible April, Ryan Dempster has a 3.09 ERA in five starts in May and has allowed only six walks and two home runs in 32 innings pitched this month. He'd better ignore his recent history against the Pirates, though; he was 0-4 against then in 2010 with a 7.23 ERA. The current Pirate who hits him best (and who seems to hit every Cubs pitcher) is Andrew McCutchen (.313, 5-for-16, a double, a HR).

Jeff Karstens made three starts against the Cubs last year, posted a win, a loss and a no-decision, and a 3.00 ERA and issued only four walks in 18 innings. Oddly enough, even with that record, there are several Cubs who hit him hard: Alfonso Soriano (7-for-14, two HR); Blake DeWitt (6-for-9, two doubles) and Koyie Hill (6-for-11, two doubles, one HR). The way things are going, those guys will all go 0-for-4 today.

Also, doesn't Karstens have weird-looking eyebrows?

Shades of the 1970s

This is beginning to look those horrible Cubs teams of my college days. That’s something I don’t need to relive.

Where is Mick Kelleher when we need him?

Does Ramirez have to hit cleanup every day?

i’d put Soriano there with Pena behind him. Then Ramirez.

by jerry morales rules on May 29, 2011 11:10 AM CDT reply actions

He should switch Ramirez and Pena...

1 – Because Pena’s been hitting better lately.

2 – Pena’s showing some power lately.

3 – It’d split the two righties for Pena.

I can see why Ramirez might get the cleanup spot…Castro is really the only hitter to give a crap about in this lineup, and Pena’s been hitting better lately…so maybe he can see some better pitchers to drive…it’s not happening…maybe things gets better when Soto comes back.

You wanna know how bad it is? I'll tell you how bad it is...

It’s so bad, those drivel-spewing motormouths on espn radio (mike murphy & fred hubner) just threw something out there that actually might make sense.

Soriano for Dunn. Both have contracts expiring in 2014. Balance up the money differential if necessary (and knowing Reinsdorf, it be necessary).

I’d jump at if if I were the Cubs. I’m still trying to figure out why Sox might want to do it. The espn guys are saying that Dunn is just miserable as a DH and it’s obviously affecting his play. Haven’t heard that from anywhere else though.

Also, Soriano obviously has a NTC – no idea how he would feel about being a DH. So I give it about a 5% chance of happening. But I think it would be a “big-market” type of move that would actually make sense.

Dunn would have to play LF this year. Ugly. Just as ugly as Soriano.

Then he’d have to move to 1st next year… giving Castro 10 more errors on the year.

I'd argue it'd be less ugly than Soriano, but the difference is not much, either way.

And if Jackson is in CF next year, that might help to minimize Dunn’s defensive shortcomings. Then Ricketts goes and signs Pujols… all of a sudden we have the two opposing sluggers that have done the most damage at Wrigley Field over the years – only now they’re on our side. Isn’t this what big-market teams are supposed to do?

Castro, Barney, Pujols, Dunn…. oh my…

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on May 29, 2011 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I think I'm starting to want Fielder more than Pujols...

And I’m not a Barney believer yet. DJ Lemahieu might challenge Barney next year.

RH power hitters...

are being talked about as a rare commodity nowadays. It’s why I’m such a big Justin Upton pusher here.

BTW: Even with the luxury of dumping Soriano’s contract I wouldn’t do it for Dunn. It’s just creating more problems to tinker with a team that’s going to not win the WS anyway. If Dunn was The Difference, then sure, but he’s not.

by SenorGato on May 29, 2011 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Well... we'd finally have our nemesis'..... on the wrong side of 30

And reliving the bad contract of Soriano again in a couple of years.

Plus, unless we spend our free agent dollars on TOR starters, our rotation for the future doesn’t look to bright. We have a big group of OF prospects, I’d much prefer to see the youthful legs saving runs behind the infield, because we’re going to need much better defense.

Dunn might be less ugly in left than Soriano only because he has even less range and

wouldn’t be flailing grotesquely for balls against the wall. I think Dave Kingman was actually a better left fielder than both of them and that’s horrifying.

by the nth on May 29, 2011 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Dunn, at the very least, has an instinct for the position.

He can’t actually DO anything with those instincts, but he knows what he’s SUPPOSED to be doing. Soriano’s just flailing around wildly out there.

Also, in 2012 Pena leaves, Dunn moves to 1B, and everything’s back to normal.

he could just carry Campana on his back

when a ball comes towards Dunn, Campana jumps off, chases it down, throws it back and then comes running back to Dunn and hops back on.

Soriano is the worst LF I have ever seen.

Dunn’s problem is that he’s physically incapable of doing great things at the position. Soriano problem is that he has no idea what he should be doing. AND his legs are gone.

Dave Kingman was bad out there in LF, too

Also like Soriano, he’d hit some tape measure shots and strike out a lot.

by EalyEagle on May 29, 2011 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I would do this in a heartbeat

The White Sox would be silly to. Dunn may be miserable as a DH, but my guess is that he’ll figure it out, if not this year then maybe next. What I’m saying is that there’s upside for Dunn. There is no upside with Soriano. Maybe his numbers will get a bit better if he’s only a DH, but, really, how much?

by jerry morales rules on May 29, 2011 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

As a DH, I'm not sure his numbers need to get better.

He’ll still probably hit 30 homers. That’s not bad to have as a DH

Who are the pitchers in this league with absolutely horrible contracts right now?

Because that’s the deal I’d be looking to make with Soriano. Clear the space in the OF, and add an arm in the rotation…. hoping to get a reclamation project, like Silva last year. But, with a better attitude.

NO! No more bad contracts!

If that’s the case, release Soriano outright. There is no reason to tie up another roster spot with an over-priced, underperforming player.

Bradley was a cancer and had to be moved. Soriano is no such thing. If you decide that he has to go, take the financial hit and move on. No more bad paper.

by jerry morales rules on May 29, 2011 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

There's two options.

1. You either pay him to play somewhere else.
2. Or, you take on Barry Zito’s contract in return. At least with a Zito, you have a guy who might help your rotation. and if not… then you eat the whole contract later.

by cubzfan on May 29, 2011 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Why put yourself in the hole like that?

If you’re taking on Zito’s contract you are pigeonholing yourself and betting on Zito to perform well. And then, as you noted, you might just have to let him go anyway. Why not free yourself from those constraints and start anew? Look at all the option and choose which one makes the most sense. I’m sick of bringing in players and hoping that they somehow magically turn it around.

No to bad paper coming back. Absolutely no. It only masks poor decision making and it will boil back up.

The Cubs should free themselves from this poor decision. If they decide that they need to move on, then move on. Don’t bring in another potential problem.

Soriano ($18mil through 2014) plus cash and an arm to the Yankees for AJ Burnett ($16.5mil in 2012 & 2013)

You’re already in the hole. You’re paying out that money regardless. At least try to get some on field production for the money, before you completely cut your losses.

And, with the shape that our rotation is in right now, any veteran pitcher would be a welcome addition.

At least try to get some on field production for the money, before you completely cut your losses.

That is what is putting you in the hole. If you decide it’s a loss, just cut them and make the right baseball decisions going forward.

I understand your concern. You want to see something come back for the investment made, but, in doing so, you are tying up time and energy into a situation that you might have to ditch eventually anyway.

If the Cubs were in a situation where an over-priced 5th starter might be a key to playoff run, then I’d relent, but this team need A LOT of work. Start fresh.

by jerry morales rules on May 29, 2011 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

+1

Dunn or Zito would be as dumb as giving Soriano 136 million over 8 years in the first place…neither significantly improves the team and both would be expensive blocks when young players come up. Soriano may be an expensive block himself, but 1. there’s younger, better FA 1B available in Dunn’s case and he’s not playing LF here and 2. Zito’s combination of price and mediocrity would just be moving the black hole contract from LF to P. There’s no point.

And what does all that do? Marginally improve a roster that really wasn’t going anywhere anyway? Why? I’d rather just wait on the kids and money to free itself up . This team isn’t SO far off unless they do stupid stuff like take on more bad contracts.

by SenorGato on May 29, 2011 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Have the Chan Ho Park and Mike Hampton deals expired yet?

I don’t think that anyone is giving out those kinds of awful contracts anymore.

There’s Barry Zito, I guess. But do you think that the Giants would even do that? Maybe John Lackey, but I don’t see Boston doing that trade ever, no matter how bad things get.

Other teams would say Z’s deal is awful, but he still posts sub-4 ERAs every year. And at least he gives a crap about winning and losing.

He had some outings this year where he completely lost it in the 5th or 6th inning, and everyone in the ballpark EXCEPT Quade knew it. Still, he’s fundamentally the same guy – he hasn’t fallen off the cliff yet. He’s just not quite as good.

to the reality where I’m the Cubs GM and Soriano for Burnett is a good idea to the Yankees GM.

He’s got upside…even Lackey…Zito…no…and he’s by far the most expensive…I can’t believe that guy’s even being discussed (and that I bought his A’s jersey when he beat Pedro for the CY).

by SenorGato on May 29, 2011 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

That's true

12 HRs and a .277 average is decent for a DH. I don’t have the inclination to look it up, but my guess is that those numbers would be near the top of the DHs this year.

by jerry morales rules on May 29, 2011 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

How can he be so unfathomably bad at defense?

It’s as if he’d never played defense growing up. There are probably 300 people in Wrigley every day who would be better left-fielders than Soriano, and I’m not even counting the people in the dugouts.

I don't get it either

Though his speed has taken a huge hit over the years which has made things even worse, he is still a very athletic guy. To me, defense is a lot of “want to”. If you want to be an OK defensive player, I think you can be. You can’t necessarily be Andruw Jones, but you can be OK.

I’m sure that the starting LFer for Clemente High School this year is a better defensive player than Soriano.

There are times where there just isn't anything positive to write about

I admire Al’s ability to find the silver lining in the darkest cloud, without going over the line into either Pollyanna or TJ. But let’s face facts – this team, as it is currently constructed, is going nowhere fast. There is nothing to be excited or happy about.

This is the closing of an era that saw some pretty good runs with this group of players – no, not good enough to win a WS, but certainly good enough to keep all but the most jaded fans entertained.

We all knew that if this season was going to end up in a playoff appearance, there were a lot of factors that had to go just right. They needed one more year of clutch production with Ramirez. Soriano had to play at least league average both offensively and defensively. They needed Pena to up his average/OBP just a bit. They couldn’t afford a lot of injuries.

But time and injuries seem to have caught up to a lot of the players. Ramirez seemed resigned that he was not coming back all the way back during the Cubs Convention. Pena is hitting exactly as we thought/feared he would, crushing the occassional homer, providing solid defense, and even some laughs by bunting his way on.

There are a few bright spots. Castro, of course. Marmol, when we get to see him. Baker is playing well enough to find himself traded to contender for a AA-pitching “prospect” who will never pan out. We can hope that Garza figures out how to pitch in the NL.

So, yeah, this year is going to continue to suck. A Giants-like rebound is not real likely. But in the end, it could be worse. We could be Mets fans.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"

so it would make sense if he started, right? But no, we get to see the fantastic Hill catching today! Maybe the hail will give Quade some time to realize his inherent lack of brain usage.

Hendry and Quade LOVE Koyie.

Hendry probably thinks that he’s a steal at $800K, because we used to pay our backup catcher $3MM.

Hill played really well when Soto was down

by zoltarian1114 on May 29, 2011 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm NOT letting that one slip by.

Since he became the starter on May 10 (when Soto went down), he’s hitting .217 / .250 /.304, for a .554 OPS.

I’m willing to bet that is the worst in MLB.

I went to check out Eli Whiteside...who'll be starting for Buster Posey...

.176/.263/.324/.587

He’s outhitting our Koyie, but not by much. Backup catchers will alwaaaaaaaaaaaaaays suck as hitters….that’s not really what they’re there for. It’s not as if catcher is a dime a dozen type position…

Ducks because psuedodefense of Hill is punishable by hanging

by SenorGato on May 29, 2011 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

We'll see how he does with regular time.

He’s already better than Koyie, and if he doesn’t improve, I’ll bet that they go with someone else. It’s rare to see a .554 OPS rewarded with more PT and more money.

I’d also be more swayed if Koyie was good defensively.

And it’s not crazy to give Geo a day to get reacclimated

We'll all miss you Ron.

I doubt this game gets played.

Man, there have already been two storm lines to hit that area,

But that third one off to the west (just nearing Aurora) looks really bad.

I'm not a huge believer in such things BUT...

all the rain this year are Ronnie’s tears for having his number commemorated on this year’s Cub uniform. Just sayin’… Rain would be a merciful conclusion rather than a) game televised on WGN b) Sunday game and c) the Pirates. It’s almost a lock on a loss.

Headed for 0-8, it appears

His fast ball looked flatter than a pancake in the first inning, and the Blue Jays were all over it. He’s had a little bad luck, but today he’s just bad.

This game needs to be postponed

It’s sheer idiocy to think they can get a game in today.

I can't stand it when I hear

people say we can’t get in a game because of rain. It’s like saying you can’t afford it. Sheesh, people, pull off the tarps, pull out the wallets and let’s play two! (Day-Night of course)

It is absolutely brutal in DuPage county right now

I don’t understand why they even tried today. Do the Cubs REALLY want to pitch Rodrigo Lopez tomorrow? Just call the bloody game at 9am and send the Pirates to the airport, and play two in September and hope that the Pirates have traded McCutchen by then.
