This interview is not going to damage
Darwin Barney’s rep as a “smart” baseball player. Very informative.
Great read
I was impressed by him before… more so now.

This might make me look stupid...
…but why is Z allowed to move infielders? It seems like this isn’t something he should worry about.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Would that question be asked if "Zambrano"
was replaced by “Maddux”?
Barney seems to indicate that Z has a plan re: how he’s looking to set hitters up.

Not sure that comparison holds water.
Z to Maddux is apples to oranges. Z gets rattled very easily. Maddux, not so much.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I had wondered the same thing
about why Z did that. Is that popular around the league? I’m not faulting Z.
Although I do hope comparing Z to Maddux was a bit of hyperbole. :)

Not hyperbole or comparison.
Saying that maybe Z has a plan, but we’re just predisposed to thinking he’s a dummy because he’s a hothead.
Yeah, Maddux probably always had a better plan, but that doesn’t mean that Z doesn’t understand the game and his plan well enough to work with his teammates to execute it.

So are you saying Z isn't a hothead?
Z has enough (mental) problems, I’d like to see him focus on throwing the ball and leave the defensive alignments up to the coaches.
It’s probably a small thing, but when it comes to Z is there really such thing as a small thing?
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
The point is that Z knows exactly how he's working the batters.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with moving around your infielders if their placement doesn’t make sense for the pitch you’re about to execute.
All this tells me is that Z has a great understanding of batters tendencies and confidence in his pitches. It has nothing to do with him being a hothead.
For a normal pitcher there's nothing wrong with that
Z isn’t a normal pitcher. He needs to focus on executing his pitches and leave the defensive alignments up to coaching staff.

I think he was saying that Zambrano...
as a MLB vet might have some clue of how to set up the D for his style of pitching.
