2011 Cubs Draft Review
The 2011 Cubs draft has been a bit of a roller coster for me. We missed out on my some of my favorite players especially when Rendon started to slide (though realisticaly it was never gonna happen) and passed on college studs like Gray and Springer, who were still available @9. Getting Baez @ 9 is solid and grew on me after reading more info on him. While he wasn't on my original draft radar I did see he was moving up draft boards leading up to the draft.
I like the fact we went so H.S. heavy and this draft had the feel of a T.B. Rays draft. While I've always said that drafting a H.S. bat is the riskiest player to draft you have a much better chance of finding a sleeper/diamond in the rough then with a college bat Mark Grace (24th round/S.D. State) not withstanding. After the 200-300 players drafted scouting reports start to get hit and miss so guys like Josh77, Ryno G, RynoRooter, SenorGato,Tim815, and the other draft savvy members of this community please add anything I missed/potenitaly got wrong, or just interesting side notes. I'm hoping to make this thread an informitive place to get a clear picture on our draft this year.
At this point there is no way to grade our draft because our success or lack there of will hinge on signing guys like Dunston Jr., Maples, Jacquez, and a few others. As far as guessing what we will spend it's also tough and if ownership is really going to attempt to sign some of these tough signs our total could land somewhere in the 6-7 million range. So here we go with just some quick short responses to some of our picks:
Of coarse the talk starts with Javier Baez and I have already done a short scouting report:
http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2011/6/6/2210192/javier-baez-scouting-report
And Josh77 did a more in-depth report:
http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2011/6/7/2210877/2011-mlb-draft-cubs-welcome-to-ss-javier-baez
So I won't beat this to death. Baez has 1 of the quickest bats in the draft and has been compared to Gary Sheffield in terms of bat speed. The similarities don't end there. Bat speed, area, ameteur position, explsiviness, and attitude. Imo Baez instincts are better then Sheffield's at the same age but weather or not it translate's only time will tell. Baez will probably move off SS....Dan Vogelbach.....I would have liked this pick more in the 3rd then 2nd. His bat will need to carry him. I heard some Prince Fielder comps on this site and that is not even close. Fielder had elite Power/Eye/even hit tool coming out of H.S. and his athletism is underated. Calling him even a poor man's Fielder is a bit rich. I'd say a less athletic version of Matt LaPorta (ouch) is closer.......Zeke DeVoss....After checking in @ work I was less then enthuised by this pick. He's got a good eye, athletisim, and speed but outside of yoiur elite 1st rounders i.e. Mike Trout/Jacoby Ellsbury I think players with this profile tend to be a tad overrated. I don't hate this pick but felt we could hae done better and he does have some upside. Best case senario is Micheal Brantley....Tony Zych...Real nice pick here since I felt he would go in the s1st or early second. Looks more like a set up guy then a true closer but has mid-to-upper 90's FB w/ a potnetial above-average slider. Should move fast and keep costs down......Tayler Scott....6'2, athletic, and projectable. This is where I started coming back up. Sit's low 90's w/ a promising CB.....Neftali Rosario...Good defender @ C w/ a nice arm and power. A project but could be a real sleeper out of Puerto Rico......Trevor Gretzky....Again more projection. Has power potential and needs to work on his hitting. Obviously the son of Wayne Gretzky and has good hand-eye cordination.....Garrett Schlecht....Illinios native. Probably a LF but has good contact skills and w/ a quick LH bat....Daniel Lockhart...son of a former big leaguer athletic w/ a good LH stroke.
Shawn Dunston Jr......Considered a tough sign but I'm hearing he's very open to signing w/ the Cubs now. CF with excellent speed, line drive LH stroke, and passion for the game. Probably would have gone higher had he not had an inconsistent senior season this year. Very raw but some scouts had him rated in the top 150 players......Dillon Maples.......Top 50 talent fell to the 14th rd. based on signability. 91-94 mph FB that can touch mid 90's with a good CB. Mechanics need some work but has athletism to make the nessary adjustments. CU is a work in progress. This pick is the key to our draft. If we can sign him our draft would go from solid to excellent. Probably gonna take 1.5-2 million to ink him. Has a strong commitment to home state Tar Heels.....Justin Marra.....Canada product. LH C prospect with good catch and throw skills with pop and has shown the ability to hit quality pitching....
So that's the highlights on the top 15 and I don;t want to make this to long of a read so I'm just gonna highlight a handfull more that I really like. This obviously won't be the only guys with upside we drafted after the 15th. Again please feel free to highlight some of your favriotes I missed.
23rd. Bradley Zimmer - 6'5 and lanky has average speed and a nice LH stroke with power potential once he fills out.
26th. Micheal Jensen - Small stature (6'0 190) but lively arm, low 90s FB and power curve.
31st. Ronnie Richardson - Small (5'7) but dynamic switch hitter. Went in the 11th rd. out of H.S. and is a draft eligable soph. Has good speed and solid defender in CF. Needs to be more consistent.
39th. Ricky Jacquez - Another player who is small in stature standing just 5'9 160 but has an electric arm. FB sits 92-94 and can run it up as high as 97. An excellent athlete who has a true hammer curve. Reminds me a lot of a RH Billy Wagner. A Texas recruit and the fact that he lasted until the 39th round probably means he won't sign.
Overall I think we should sign most of our top 10 picks and have heard Dunston Jr. is very open to signing with the Cubs. If we can sign Maples I think our draft goes from C/C+ range ot B/B+. I could see if the Cubs get spurned by Dunston Jr. and Maples they will go after Jaquez very agressively. I think we went with a lot of high upside power hitters and of coarse power arms.
I the Cubs fail to sign any of Maples, Dunston Jr., Jacquez, and a few others, or any, I wouldn't hold management responsible. I think they will make agressive offers for all but what it comes down to is what a 17/18 year old kid wants to do. The Cubs have spent heavily in Latin America and spent 3 million on Szczur and the 2 Cuban kids so I think they are willing to spend some money on ametuer talent.
I'll come back after signing day and grade out the draft. I'll also be p[utting together my mid season Cubs top 30 here soon. I have been working on this over the past few days and have been pressed for time so please excuse the spelling errors.

Actually
Jacquez is very willing to sign, it’ll probably take close to a mill though. The Cubs are having him participate in a California Professional Summer League to scout him against better competition, and if he does well I expect Cubs to get him signed, even if we sign Dunston and Maples. I’m fairly optimistic about Dunston and Jacquez and Cubs are gonna go hard after Maples, and I trust that they’ll get that done, although I’m a bit more worried about him more than the others, because like you said..he’s the key.
I keep seeing numbers of 6-7M
I’m really hoping Ricketts is thinking more like 8-9, because this draft class is too good to half ass, and 6M isn’t going to get the top guys signed in this draft.
I think you keep seeing those numbers
because that was around last years number. Maybe…I’m just guessing.

Last year's numbers
were much smaller, until the Szczur re-up.
I say six mil is my nymber, because, for me, spending less on this Draft Class would be a failure.

If they're not good enough to sign, they're not good enough to draft
And there is a serious issue with your scouting and/or draft and player development strategies. Not signing drafteees, especially you’re first pick, is a symptom of something greater.
It's not always that simple.
Some guys you draft later because you know they’ll have high demands, but the risk is worth the reward at that juncture in the draft.
I do agree with you regarding the first pick though, and don’t really care for the current compensation for not signing your top pick. Unless it’s a post draft injury or their demands change dramatically from when you spoke with them, there is no excuse not to ink that player.
No I mean I'm with you on the later picks
That’s definitely an issue of sign-ability vs. what are you going to get.
I am all for getting Dunston, JR
He sounds like a solid prospect with old-school leadoff skills, according to Baseball Beginnings:
“at this stage, this kid gives you defense, plus speed, plus spray abilities, and has the makings of an old school leadoff threat. That is a lot to like.”
RE:Jacquez
Great to hear he’s willing to sign. I really love this pick. I think he’s worth a mil if that’s what it takes. Let him start see if he can handle it. Hopefully worst case he ends up a Billy Wagner type outta the pen. I really love this kid.

Nice recap...
I think you’re a little harsh on Vogelbach and know you’re down on Zych. I think Vogelbach has more raw power and a better hit tool than LaPorta. He’s not as athletic, and may need a DH to be successful, but his bat really doesn’t have many questions. He has a VERY easy swing with loose wrists that generates a ton of power without any effort. He isn’t as strong or as athletic as Prince was, but the kid can flat out hit.
Zych was pegged for the supplemental round and has elite closer potential. He can hit 97-98 with the FB and has a great out pitch with his slider. Good make up as well. He will almost certainly cost above slot as a 4th rounder.
Zych?
Down on Zych? I love him. I thought this was an absolute steal in the 4th. The knock on him is his SL is inconsistent. As a 4th rounder this was great value.
See my post……………………..

RE: Vogelbach
I like him don’t get me wrong. The thing is he has 0 value defensively and can’t play anywhere else then 1B so his bat is gonna have to be exceptional. I mean he’s gonna have to rake to be worthy of a 2nd. His hit tool is pretty similar to LaPorta’s but Laporta can play LF which makes his bat a bit more playable.
I do like Vogelbach I just think he’ll need to over perform to justify his draft position. I lvoe his power and i like his PD and hit tool. I hope he pans out for us.

Vogelbach
lost weight this season. So who knows. Maybe the kid will continue to lose a little more weight, get in shape, and project to be a good firstbaseman.
This boils down to the kid and our minor league staff. Hope the kid wants it.
Yeah I got the feeling
Vogelbach will take well to pro training. He’s got the tools to really have a strong hit tool. He was a legit top 100 prospect in this draft from what I’ve read. I think it was Law who had him as high as 70.
Dunton Jr. is yet another 4 tool center fielder with the potential to be a 5 tool guy the Cus have. Hes got the ability to make consistently strong, line drive cintact. Jackson and Szczur are standout prospects like this. I think the Cubs have a mold of prospect they like. Even sounds like there’s thought in he organization.

Sounds like we're
trying to load the lineup with #6 hitters, instead of our historical #7/8 hitters.
I'm a Cubs fan. The Jaded Bitterness comes as a Standard Feature.
Both Jackson and Szczur
have the potential to be 1-3 hitters depending if and how they develop.

Someone had hit in the 70-80 range.
Not sure who. I guessed Law but yeah he’s probably more of an athleticism guy.
by SenorGato on Jun 12, 2011 11:56 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Or maybe that one was Law
A week is a long time.
The knock that Vogelbach can't play defense
is overdone. I’ve heard from more than one scout that he’s got great hands, and has adequate range for 1B. Sure, he can’t play anywhere else, but he could be solid defensively at 1B… and someone has to play there. So what’s the problem?

Agreed on this ^
Not every guy is going to be able to come in and be able to play 4 spots. The kid is a 1B. so let him play there. if he has the drive to get out and drop 30 pounds on his own, i have no concern hes gonna do gerat in a pro training session. The kid is serious bout his craft (it seems) and i think the Cubs will sign him.
I don't see closer with Zych
but maybe it happens. I think he can be a Scott Williamson type with the fastball/alder combo.
I think you’re spot on with Vogelbach. He’s a better hitter than his size might indicate.

RE: Scouting reports
Ryno G got anyhting along the lines of scouting reports? I would love to hear them since I have realy nothing in the way of info on them. Thanks.

I don't have much, but
Ernst 6’2 200 Fastball that sits in the low 90s, has a sharp curve, and pretty good command of those pitches. Threw a no-no in his final game, the state championship. Very competitive kid. Committed to North Dakota State University. Josh said he’s pretty much unsignable.
Kichler A very projectable 6’5 190 Signed with St. Mary’s, has a very smooth delivery (YouTube videos) No idea on what he throws however, if I had to guess I’d say sits in low 90s and probably touches 96.
BA had mentioned something like his parents are well off
and want him to go to school. Thus they think he will not sign.
I have no issue with flashing a large offer to kids like him and seeing if you can get them to sign. Boston has run its draft this way for years and has been highly successful with it. I would love to see the Cubs do the same with Dunston Jr, Maples, Jacquez, Marra, etc.
Any info on
Baez and if he will be hard to sign?
by bleedinblue76 on Jun 12, 2011 5:10 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Why don't the Cubs post their signings like most other teams?
I just don’t get it. They have been very slow about this the last several years. I think it is an opportunity for additional exposure and fans want it so why not feed it to them?
Well.....that would just make to much sense
The Cubs have an image to uphold you know!
it is all a game
you see people like us guessing how much of a budget the cubs have, any good agent would be out there finding out how much each person received as a bonus. It would give leverage to the agents about how much we have left to spend. Plus, we drafted a few of First Basemen this year, maybe we were figuring Shoulders is a backup plan to Vogelbach. I am guessing the less info the agents have, the better in the Cubs opinion
Bob Brenly on Leo Nunez "Dan Uggla just saved Nunez’ life because Koyie would break him into a million pieces"
Been reading up on this Jacquez kid
Very very interesting. Seems to me like a Sonny Gray 2.0. If there is one guy that the Cubs should be throwing money at outside of Maples, it should be this guy. Obviously his signability is a serious issue, considering his fall to the 39th round. Anyone have any additional insight on this kid? Talent wise or signability wise?
Also, I have to say i’m very pleased with this draft if we can sign the right guys. Well done by Wilken. This farm system is certainly headed in the right direction. I think most of us here can agree on that!
One of the best arms in the draft
Fell due to commitment to Texas and his stature. I love him and he’s more signable than you think. A mill should definitely get him signed, and Cubs will give it to him depending on how well he does in the summer league they are sending him to.
I'd say that's a reasonable price
For that velocity w/ that quality of a curve. Especially if he becomes another Sonny Gray in Texas. After three years at UT he could reasonably become a top 5 pick. I’ll be so stoked if we can ink him.
Maples
I talked our Senior legion head coach today, he says the cubs want see Maples do a few things this summer, so it should be an interesting June around here. Heard he’s already moved to Chapel Hill and were only 15 minutes south of there. We play in a pretty competitive legion area. Most kids are Low D1 or D2 players or signees. They are on senior week break now, but begin again on the 17th of June. I’m hoping with my schedule with the Juniors that I can catch a few games he pitches. I’m kind of suprised he’s not going to play in one of the college wood bat leagues we have around here.
I think you have to actually be in college for those leagues
But the Maples situation sounds very close to the Jacquez situation, which is what I expected. The fact that Maples is willing to do this at least shows that he is somewhat open to signing with the Cubs.
Maples
Heard today there is a possibility Maples will not be joining our legion team, looks like he’s already in his personal football workouts and he won’t have time. Not a good sign.
Well that sucks
But i’ll be honest, in that after the preliminary newspaper articles came out, it seemed much more likely that we can sign Jacquez instead of Maples.
Realistically
That’s still not a bad deal. To be able to sign 1 of the 2 guys that had serious signability concerns is solid. Obvioulsy, we still have no definitive answer on Maples, but I can’t say I like him a whole lot more than Jacquez.
I don't like Maples's arm action
but I love his build and projectability. I would take the 6’3" guy over 5’9" guy with the same stuff, every day of the week. I still would be jacked with Jacquez, though.
Agreed
It’s still Maples > Jacquez for me, but not by much. Sounds like Jacquez shouldn’t require as much money either.
